So...whats for dinner?

Chicken and rice wIth broccoli tonight (new recipe). Not very exciting, but I did get my hg king Arthur flour today, so I'll start a new batch of bagels tomorrow. They probably won't get finished until Saturday because Friday I'm going to my favorite Italian grocer in st. Louis. Looking forward to some house made canneloni and olives of all kinds dipped out of big white buckets. The smell of cheeses, salamis, garlic and oregano greets you with a big smelly kiss when you walk in the door. Can't wait.
-
mmmm Nancy- that big kiss sounds wonderful!
Tonight was tacos. Very boring but good. I need to go to the grocery store tomorrow and stock up. I am planning on FINALLY getting everything to make the minestrone soup! I am excited! Tomorrow at 3 DH goes in for a vasectomy. The poor thing is scared to death! On the upside, because he is so nervous he has asked his father to deal with the kids for tomorrow and Friday, as he is afraid they will hurt him. I am psyched! 2 days of no kids?? A DH on pain killers being a baby...I can handle that! Tonight as he was being a baby about it I pointed out that in the course of three years I had 2 c sections, a BMX and recon surgery and still took care of the kids! But I thanked him for his paranoia and the break I am about to have
So I will make him soup and he and I can watch movies in bed. Sounds like heaven to me!Perhaps I being insensitive?
-
I accompanied two different friends to their vasectomies. It was very interesting to say the least. They're pretty protective of the "family jewels" lol!
-
Nancy, the Italian grocery sounds like a delightful place to visit. Kind of like Central Grocery in the French Quarter in NO which claims to have made the original muffaleta sandwich.
Susan, the meyer lemon marmalade turned out really good. DH did much of the preparation. I'm not a big marmalade fan and I liked this marmalade because it is tart and not cloyingly sweet.
Our last night at home for a while. We went out to dinner with the couple who will be travelling companions. By this time tomorrow night we should be on a plane headed to Los Angeles.
Laurie, hope everything goes well with your dh's surgery.
-
Carol, it's very much like Central Grocery, only bigger.
-
Carole, have a wonderful trip!
Laurie, just keep lots of ice packs nearby for DH and he'll be fine. Ingenious idea to get childcare for the boys since you will both benefit!

DH was out tonight so I had not much of a dinner....peach greek yogurt with walnuts and chia seeds, and a vegetable, fruit smoothie to which I added hemp seed, my newest mail order grain ingredient. If I were a singleton, I would frequently eat like that! Felt filling enough, but I may be craving meat tomorrow!
-
Laurie: Children gone is a wonderful idea. When my DH had his vasectomy, the hardest thing was to keep the 4 year old from jumping on Dad to wrestle in the bed. Hope surgery went well. And I don't think you're being insensitive at all!! What a great break for you.
Carole: I know you'll have a super trip. Looking forward to hearing from you off & on.
-
Good luck with your DH, Laurie! I hope you can enjoy the no kid time at least a bit.
Carole, you must be getting excited! Fill us in when you can.
Lacy every now and the I just have a bowl of cereal for supper. It works! LOL
Nance on top of everything else you made bagels???? LOL
Luvmygoats, you will have to find the weirdest recipe and post it for us.
Today I went to noodles. Had Bangkok curry dish. it's not very hot. Sauce is thin bur it was good enough with a chicken breast. it was good just to get out of the house. I went to jewelry class and had to get cat food so even though it was only 5 degrees I went out. I read that you guys in NOLA and South Carolina had single digits too. That hirrible. We at least have lots of winter clothing and expect that but wow. What a pain for you ! The kids finally went back to school Today So THAT Was GOOD FOR THE Mom's Around here. LOL
Much love.
-
laurie - if you have not already, get some bags of frozen peas - they make great ice packs and are moldable for the vasectomy location. Get a few so you can swap out the bags - just throw them back in the freezer and re-use them again for the next icing. This was recommended for my DH's vasectomy and it worked great. FYI - he was a baby about it too - no surprise.
-
Laurie: men do not handle these things well...that's why women have babies and do all the caregiving...lol! I'm sure he will be fine...these are routine surgeries now, and you will get a much needed break, not to mention a worry free future..lol!
Last night we had the leftover steak and potatoes from the five star restaurant meal the night before...at least my BF did. I had leftover turkey taco meat on a salad. I don't like eating red meat too often whereas he will eat it every day if allowed.
Another rainy day in S. Florida but at least it's not snow! Stay warm everyone!
-
My sister made a huge crock pot of spaggetti sauce with meatballs and 3 different types of sausages. Guess what we will be eating for awhile.
-
Can't go wrong there Deb!
Tonight is Vietnamese pork chops with stir fried bok choy and sugar snap peas.
-
I think tonight is enchiladas. Have corn tortillas I need to use up. I cheat and use a Wolf chili recipe. I still can't find a canned/jarred enchilada sauce I like. Pace had one that did not sell well that I loved. I do have a jar of Frontera sauce in there but DH liked the Wolf ones and asked for them. Still have just a bit of turkey left too. Umm may have a snack b4 dinner. I plan tomorrow during the rain we're supposed to get to dig down the freezer again and start cooking up stuff down there, including that whole chicken I keep avoiding. She may just get boiled and frozen in bits. So far I have avoided getting out this week at all. Think I will make it last until Sunday for SS/church.
Uhh Deborye - I could sure use some meatballs and sauce. Yum looking.
-
Looks yummy, Deb! Oh, to have a sister here cooking for me!
Speaking of sisters, mine seems to be doing fine in her primitive VT barn/house...except for the rainy day earlier this week when she ended up with lots of water in the huge basement. She is prepping for the next anticipated warm up with hay bales and sand bags (which her township provides...very nice!) to keep the cellar dry. Hope it works to get her through the winter and spring. She says that her entire property is a huge skating rink right now. I suspect Monica and Carrie have the same in their northern reaches! What a crazy winter we are having!
In DH's effort to clear out our freezer, (his motivation is to get a new fridge/freezer since ours is over twenty years old with intermittent struggling... and we have soooo much in the freezer)he unearthed some lamb burgers for dinner. I took a long errand walk during which I picked up some enhancements for the burgers, (I really do love being able to do most of my errands on foot these days....even in the cold, if bundled,....like stopping at Walgreens for some skin cream, the travel agency to pick up some ideas for our Italy trip, and the food store for a few dinner items...and when you are on foot, you don't overbuy!). When I returned home, my neighbor called to say that she just made a boatload of soup she hoped to share with us. Well, why not depart from my kale soup first course staple! So for dinner DH grilled the lamburgers while I put together the add ons, and a salad and dressing, and we first enjoyed my neighbor's sausage corn wild rice soup.....it was really yummy!
Warm thoughts going out to all......
-
Oh Deborye! Yum. Looks so good. . Lacy doing a search of the deep freeze can be scary! My D H does that every now and then. But i won't let him toss 2 bottles I have of my breast milk I froze for my baby. You know, the one who's 28! LOL! Nance what makes the pork chops Vietnamese? And Lzurie, Specialk is right. Peas are the best ice pack. Just remember you won't want to eat them after your done...... LOL
Tonite I had a turkey sandwich. Nothing special. Canned soup. I just didn't want to go out. Even though It warmed up to a whole 20 degrees, just too lazy. Tomorrow I'm going out with a friend so I'll share then. Much love to all.
-
Monica, this particular version calls for thick chops marinated in a mixture of fish sauce, brown sugar, shallot,
rice vinegar and lime juice. They're then sauteed for about 4 minutes on each side. Other versions call for lemongrass.
-
nance- yum! I love Thai.
-
Lacey- I love the imagery of your errands. Also yum to dinner and you have to love good neighbors! When do you go to Italy?
Carol- I know you have said but when do you leave for your trip again?
Dh is doing just find with his pain meds and frozen peas. He took the meds prior to the procedure as he was told. We were in the waiting room and he takes my hand and says " You have been a great wife." I asked him if one of us was dieing? He says no- just wanted to tall me. (weird?) So a few minutes later I ask him if he is still nervous. He says no- the pills have him feeling really good. LOL!!! He was soooo relaxed. It was all pretty funny. We will see how he feels tomorrow!
Tomorrow we will have no kids and my only plans are to make the minestrone soup and take a nap. Ha!!
Hope everyone had a great day:)
-
Laurie - good to take compliments wherever we can find them. Carole left today.
Moon - I love this - breast milk in the freezer? That's almost like cleaning out my Mother's house after she died when I was 60 and finding she'd saved full sets of baby teeth from each of us kids
Lacey - I was just thinking how much I loved walking to do errands when my son was a baby & we lived in Albuquerque. I really miss that but Houston is not a walking friendly town.
Nance - thanks for the chop marinade. I was going to ask too.
Luv - I've found several store brand sauces I really like at HEB & Central Market - particularly the green chili. Do you have an HEB anywhere on your route?
Popcorn for dinner. Thinking of Bedo in front of a fireplace w/popcorn & apple slices.
-
Laurie, hopefully hubby's discomfort is calming down. I remember a conversation between my cousin (a doctor) and Mickey (studying to be a doctor). The first time the two of them met was right after he had just finished doing a vasectomy. His comment was that the anatomy books were all wrong about the vas deferens..that, despite it's location, it was most certainly attached to a man's chin. He said that during the procedure, he would carefully "tug" on the vas deferens to make sure he had it..and every time he tugged, the man's chin would move downward.
Moon, I can't say anything like that was in our freezer when we cleaned it out (pulled in the trash can and threw it all away) due to freezer failure.
Lacey, I love walking to the grocery store. The way the city zoning regulations are set up, it's almost impossible for commercial establishments to be within what most people consider would be walking distance of their home...and the place isn't that walking friendly...so everyone drives.
And Deb, that spaghetti sauce looks good.
I'm off work today....more house cleaning and about 5 hours from now, I'm taking DD to the driver license place to take her driving test so she can (!) get her driving license..... The insurance companies say this is one of the worst places in the country for staged wrecks.......sigh.....so the insurance rates are *high*...and, in my case, going *way* up......
-
Congrats Eric and Sharon. And sympathy! LOL. Yeah. Now you worry a lot more. Up here we have graduated rules for newbie drivers. Only one other person in the car. But my kids had to promise not to use the radio for the first month too. Also we made all our four change a tire at our house before they could take the car the first time. Just so they would know how and not be stranded. (My DH would never pay for triple A. ) insurance really does go up though. Good luck and Much love.
Carol safe trip!
-
Laurie - Hope your DH is recovering without incident. Yay for 2 days no kids. Minestrone sounds good.
Eric - the insurance may go up but you will pay less with a DD. I still think there is some incentive for good grades too but has been awhile for us (DD is 26.5 now) so could certainly be wrong. Why is AZ so bad for staged wrecks? Monica - I forgot about the graduated license. Yes, we have that too. DD tried to change a tire once, but it had been put on with automatic wrench and she couldn't budge it. She does check her tire pressures and fills them up if needed.
MinusTwo - I've looked at Central Market, not found anything but then I'm a wimp on hotness. There is an HEB but in Burleson, south of FW. Just googled 50 miles. But I do need to go visit the cemetery where my DM's buried which is down past that. Looks like we're getting a stretch of good weather. Maybe next week.
The enchiladas did not get made. DH came home earlier than I anticipated. Ate last of turkey, made good brown rice, froz. broccoli and biscuits. We're going to clean out storage closet in a bit. Oh joy. Major rearranging. Good day to do it - rainy but nicely warmer.
-
AZ has the graduated license as well and the restrictions are similar to those in the other states.
The staged wrecks are probably common in most large cities..so I don't think it's an Arizona only thing. Still, here we tend to drive a lot. Getting 30,000 miles per year on a car isn't unusual, so it's also just a "exposed more often, and longer, to the threat" type of thing.
Sharon and I both have CDLs and she trained drivers. Still, we had a driving school teach DD part way through to make sure we weren't missing something or teaching her wrong...and to give her a chance to drive while someone else watched. She has 3.4 GPA , so between that and the paid driving school, we've got all the discounts covered.
Moon...We think alike. DD had to do change a tire on each of the cars here as well. Her standing by the road, crying, waiting for some guy to come rescue her because she doesn't know what to do...is not acceptable. :-)
Well, off to motor vehicles to do the test. I washed the windows for her and gave the car a "pre-trip inspection" like a driver is supposed to do for a big truck before taking it out on the road. If any lights, windshield wiper, horn, etc. aren't working they won't allow the test to continue.
.
-
Eric - best of luck to DD and to you to on your new adventures. Sure know about the driving miles.
-
Eric- Congrats to your daughter, she must be very excited. Glad you have all the discounts covered! I am impressed that you taught her to change a tire too!
Thanks to all of you for your kind words and thoughts on DH. He is doing just fine. I have not seen him sit still this long in my life! He is usually a very restless guy who has to be on the go all the time. (unlike me! I like my quiet time.) He does not seem to have too much discomfort and is enjoying being spoiled. He is already talking about going to a friends to watch the Patriots game tomorrow night and sleeping over.
I made the minestrone soup today. It is excellent!! Thank you so much...I think it is Nancey's recipe? It is very flavorful. DH and I had it for lunch with some garlic bread sticks. I don't think he cared for it as there is no meat in it. to quote "It's good but where is the sausage?" Apparently he thought there was sausage in minestrone soup? My DB girlfriend isn't feeling well so I brought them some as well.
Tonights dinner will be Bulogi- the pork medalions with sauce and pineapple over rice. DS1 will be psyched as it is one of his favorites,
-
Laurie, sounds like you are taking good care of DH during his recovery. I actally broke out laughing after reading your response to his pre-op declaration. I could just picture you saying that with a quizzical look and it struck me as so funny! I'm sure the Pat's game will motivate him to push through any residual pain!
Apropro of our recent posts about connections with grown kids, DS2 texted DH this week to ask if he wanted to go to the Pat's game with him and his crew of friends. Then, when he heard it would be raining (but fortunately, not freezing!) for the whole game (and tailgating time) he gave DH the chance to opt out, but my DH would rarely wimp out of anything due to weather....so off they will go....and I get to happily watch the drenched fans from the warm/dry family room. Actually that makes me think....I can make them some tasty cookies for their tailgating and it gives me a chance to use my new kitchen aid mixer blade, while not having to have any high caloric "product" in the house!

Hope the driving test went well, Eric. My two sons had such different approaches to that process...DS1 was dying to drive, and called every single day to be sure he could get the earliest possible test date. He finally succeeded and it snowed on that day...he actually took his test in the snow storm! DS2 was way more relaxed about the whole thing, maybe because DS1 was usually willing and able to drive him whereever. Definitely a family milestone, Eric. Congratulations!
-
We couldn't do the test today...While we were waiting, someone had a wreck on the adjoining street and blocked the parking lot..... and they quit doing tests for the day.
sigh.....
-
OH bananas Eric....so frustrating!
Laurie Now is the time (while he is under the influence) to take the credit card and run! LOL Was totally laughing at his comment to you...probably felt like he was going in front of the firing squad. My BIL just had this done and he had an allergic reaction to the metal clips and his "stuff" swelled to the size of huge grapefruits....no kidding...I saw them! In spite of all the ice...he could not walk for a week. When he finally made an appearance in public, they still barely fit in his shorts....boy did we have fun at his expense! never seen anything like it in all my nursing career.
Anyways....staying home tonight, leftover something for dinner. Maybe popcorn.
-
Carrie, I feel badly roaring with laughter at your poor BIL's experience. Might not want to tell too many guys in line about that! Popcorn sounds good!
That's too bad for DD, Eric. How frustrating!
-
My brother was circumcised as an adult. Turned out he was allergic to the iodine they used to swab the incision. Looked like he had a third thigh. Could only wear sweats for a couple of weeks. His wife was not happy.
