Is soy bad for breast cancer survivors?
Just curious if soy is bad for breast cancer survivors. I am reading conflicting reports on it. Thanks in advance!

this point was all in the news about the time I was first diagnosed so asked my onco
she said do not go nuts....(I had eaten soy beans at a sushi restaurant) but don't switch to soy milk
so I do not add more soy but confess to some fresh soy beans at a salad bar yesterday

Ok thanks! My husband bought silk soy coffee creamer and I don't want to use it if it is bad for you!

This is a topic that has conflicting information. I have been told not to eat "soy isolate protein". This is the soy that is an additive in many food products for extra protein such as protein bars and protein powders. Also, many vegetarian foods use it as the main protein ingredient, things like soy turkey, hot dogs, bacon as well as many (most) vegetarian foods you will find in the frozen food section.
This is my experience. Please follow your oncologists advise!!

when I ask my onco he said everything in moderation. He said the studies are, as we know, conflicting.
-
My onc said it was okay for me to eat tofu//soy in moderation...I probably eat it 2 or 3 times/month and love it every time I eat it.....I also go through phases where I eat edamane....I

you can eat femented soy products, like tofu....the way asians have been consuming them. but in moderation.
i like tofu so i still eat some just not all the time and not much.

I am 100% ER+, and my MO has said I can eat anything... she just wanted me to stop drinking soy milk (I was drinking a LOT of it) and switch to either rice milk or almond milk or LactAid.
She said that there were so many conflicting studies on soy, but still no credible evidence that it causes or exacerbates breast cancer.
As for soy protein isolates, she said when it is far down on the list of ingredients, to not worry about it.
In other words, a balanced diet, everything in moderation, keep the weight off, and get my nutrients from real food, not supplements.

ON the premise our GPs and med teams can be far from conversant on everything, I'd look further afield for documentation which all adds up to proof which hopefully then gives us enough to decide one way or the other. My decision even aside from BC and its type (ER+) is PASS. Most of it is GE. Since I do have BC and Im ER+ I avoid it if at all possible.
-
None of the studies I've read have shown a negative impact on BC from eating a lot of soy. In fact it seems to have a beneficial effect. But I am still leery of soy protein isolate, which is in a lot of vegetarian faux meat products and protein bars. I used to love my Luna bars, but no more....Still eat tofu, edamame, and some soy milk, but I do go for the organic, GMO free.
-
From what I can tell the studies on soy and bc (including ER+ bc) are fairly conclusive that soy (but not refined soy derivatives) are absolutely fine to consume. You can go to the following link and scroll to the Table of Study Findings regarding multiple soy/bc/mbc studies.
