    mammalou, way to go!!!  And yes, it is time consuming! 

    Today, I went to pilates and toke a long walk on the beach with a friend.....yes, there are dishes in the sink and laundry piling up, but THAT can WAIT....my health and fitness cannot!

    I agree.  I told my husband I didn't have time to exercise AND cook dinner.  Oh well.

    Okay. I'll bite! I am at my worst weight/health ever and am suffering from an injury to my iltiotibial band on my left leg. I've had to stop my regular circuit training class, and, like others have said, I'm eating and drinking for comfort. I was diagnosed at 43 with mulitfocal IDC and pushed into early menopause because of chemo. In the past year, I've probably gained 10 pounds, and I could easily stand to lose 30. 

    I have two daughters that are healthy--both are gymnasts and one plays soccer, and I really want to work on a healthy lifestyle that they can follow.

    We went on a family hike on Sunday, and I'm hoping to incorporate more exercise in our routines. I've tried Lose It in the past, which I think can probably be pretty effective, but I've not been able to stick with it! 

    Maybe with all of you in my corner, I'll be more willing to follow a plan.

    Susie - way to go! Seeing results for your efforts is always motivating.

    codavis - silly ITB not behaving, I dealt with that injury a few years ago. My physiotherapist had me use a foam roller to stretch the ITB and that has been a life saver. I know I need to use my roller as soon as I start to feel a twinge in my knee or hip and it has kept me injury free.

    I got a run in on Sunday with my girlfriend. We took advantage of the milder weather and ran on the Rideau Canal. I also went out yesterday in the freezing cold. It turned out into a obstacle course with the blown away garbage cans and recycling bins :) planning on going out for another run tonight. Gotta train for a 10k race in March.

    Mamalou, why not break up your walk and do less at a time? I walk my dogs in the morning, then go out in the afternoon and walk/jog by myself.  When I was working I walked with a friend during our lunch hours. We walked for 45 minutes and then used the last 15 minutes to eat. In those days I also ran  4-5 miles a day with my dogs before work. But I'm 15 years older now and can't do as much.

    Right now I'm 20 lbs overweight due to a bad knee. Unfortunately, due to my years of ballet (as a teen) and then a marathoner (in my 40s) I guess I've worn out my left knee. I have very little cartilage left and the doc doesn't recommend even a slow jog.  Walking hurts too, but I'm slowly recovering from a bad knee sprain (which is when the bone-on-bone condition was discovered; along with other problems,eg arthritis, torn meniscus, etc) 

     Debating about some injections, which only work temporarily or a knee replacement, which might not work for me due to my bad osteoporosis. The bones in my leg might not be able to support the new knee.  Anyway ---I am doing the best I can for now - it is annoying to have the extra weight - that's for sure.

    I am going to try to keep up the dog walks (no question about that - they would be so disappointed) and then add some short walks during the rest of the day.  The doc didn't say I shouldn't walk so I probably won't make things worse.

    Wednesday night is yoga.  I haven't been in 3 weeks due to the holidays.  Hope it's not too difficult tonight!

    Looking forward to this artic vortex (what IS that?) getting out of here so I can get my walks in after work without getting frostbite.

    Got in 3 walk/jogs with the dogs.  Feeling encouraged as the pain in my knee was minimal.  Will try a short walk later.

    This thread is a great idea. I'm in. 2013 was all about breast cancer for me. I want to make 2014 all about living! I also post on the threads, "Let's Post Our Daily Exercise" & "Wednesday Weigh In."

    After my active treatment, I lost 20 lbs and have been doing weight training and walking. I got back to my Weight Watchers lifetime goal weight, so that I can use the E-Tools and go to meetings free as long as I weigh in monthly within 2 lbs of my goal weight. I've lost and regained too many times in my life. For me, the challenge now is to maintain my healthy weight for life.

    Dogsandjogs, your user name caught my attention. My DH & I have three dogs and walking them is a big part of my fitness "program." Dogs are great for motivation, aren't they? When I was going through chemo, DH and those dogs were my "push" to at least get out of the house and walk most days. In 2014 I want to do more jogging / running, even if only in the form of walk/run intervals. I just got a new pair of running shoes.

    And although I'm not a vegetarian or vegan, I eat "mostly" vegan. I do eat some organic yogurt most days in smoothies with almond milk and frozen berries. I get a lot of my protein from beans. I order heirloom beans from www.ranchogordo.com. Much better quality and variety than most beans you find at supermarkets.

    I recently got the book, "Eating on the Wild Side" by Jo Robinson. It is chock full of fascinating, scientifically based info about how to choose, store and prepare the healthiest fruits and veggies. In 2014 I want to try to eat at least one cruciferous veggie, one leafy green, one orange veggie, one citrus fruit, one apple or other fruit, and some berries each day. I also want to discover new (to me, anyway) fruits and veggies this year.

    I'm trying to keep wheat, sugar and meat to a minimum.

    can I join you? I want to lose 20 lbs before my xchange. This way the new me will really be the new me. Considering WW and getting a fitbit. I've done WW before with sucess.

    Swimmom2, you might also want to join the "Wednesday Weigh In" thread. We are doing a challenge there for the first quarter of 2014. Everyone set their own goal of what they want to weigh by March 31. We all weigh in every Wednesday and we don't have to post our weight unless we want to. We do post how much we are up or down since the previous week. There's a lot of encouragement and accountability there.

    I'm in!  I want to lose 20 pounds in 2014.  I want to lose 10 by my July appointment with MO - she is all about fat cells feed cancer. Then I want to lose another 10 by the end of the year.  Trying to eat healthy and use portion control. I need to get serious about exercise, too!

    Thanks Annie for the book and the link!  I am still very hooked on sugar, in the form of jam, but do eat wheat bread and crackers and pasta.  I thought wheat was good for you?

    You're welcome D&J! There are so many opinions out on wheat, and I don't make any hard and fast rules for myself, but I think books like "Wheat Belly" give some strong evidence that today's wheat, which is so different than wheat was 50 years ago, contributes to cravings, binges, spikes in blood sugar and excess belly fat. I do eat whole wheat pasta, bread and tortillas, but in moderation.

    Day two of WW and not doing too bad. So far I am staying within my allotted points and exercised both days. Sure hope I can keep this up....lol

    Way to go Odie!  I found it much harder in the beginning. It got easier for me as I learned the points values of some of my favorite foods and recipes. 

    I love that all fruits and veggies are "free." I try to "indulge" in expensive, organic, really good fruit in season. Right now I'm loving making fruit salads with honey crisp apples and tangelos, clementines or Cara Cara oranges plus some frozen blueberries, a few chopped walnuts and a "dressing" of lemon or lime juice & Splenda. I don't worry about consuming moderate amounts of Splenda, but for those who do, it wouldn't take much sugar to make an equally yummy fruit salad.

    I'm finding it hard to do it without WW. I think I'll join after the weekend.  Tried my fitness pal app, but it had me at 1200 calories.  I don't think I can manage that. WW does a better job of keeping away hunger.

    I tried that app too and I've tried Spark People, but so far, for me, nothing beats WW E-Tools.

    AnnieLane, wheat belly is a great book for those who are wondering about gluten in their diet.  I have been GF for at least two years and feel so much better for it.  People ask if I miss "all the good stuff" and I really don't.

    We have been eating healthier, and my son is also eating better.  We had quinoa this week, he and I go get pitaya (dragon fruit) smoothies, I am cooking more with beans, he ate sweet potatoes for the first time (he is 12 and on the autism spectrum, every new food is a victory!  He eats more varied than many children with autism, but there is room for improvement for both of us!)  He is helping in the kitchen, so it has really been fun!  I hope we can keep it up!

    codavis, I too am doing more family hikes!  Keep up the good work!

    And to all of you keep posting your ideas and your "wins"!  whatever they are!!!  They are inspirational to me.

    That salad sounds great Annie. I too tried Spark People and Lose it but am really hoping to make better food habits which I think WW will help with. Am really liking the simple start plan as it is easy to follow and is probably how I should be eating most days.

    Ok ladies, no one has posted here in awhile, so I have to ask how is it going???

    I have been busy hiking and doing pilates, some healthy eating, some not as healthy, but overall pretty good.  But the funny thing is, after a busy week of exercise, cooking etc, I nearly passed out on the couch this afternoon!

    Hope you all get through the superbowl parties without feeling too guilty.  Anyone's team in it???

    Hmm. Well, I decided to join you, but then did nothing about it. Sorry.

    I really would like to work on getting in healthier shape.

    On a side note, the Seahawks are in it! It's very exciting here in Seattle, and I"m going to a party at a pizza place to watch the game. My goal is to eat at least as much salad as I do pizza!

    I am in Seattle too.  I am going to do what one wise Facebook poster advised.  Exercise on Monday!!!

    Plus, today should be a great day for a long bicycle ride.  Hoping for a ski tomorrow, if snow in the mountains.  I have only been once this season and that was on Mount Rainier.  No snow for x-country.  I miss the kick-butt Nordic trails at Snoqualmie.

    Solen....if your son likes sweet potatoes, he might like roasted veggies.  Roasting makes everything sweet.  Did carrots last night.  Yum.

    One strategy I use to keep the lard off is lifting free weights.  The reason is that muscle consumes more energy so you can EAT MORE.  Plus it looks better than lard.  Cycling, skiing, and running do a good job with my legs.  I do crunches for my midsection on an exercise ball.

    The other one is summer cycling events.  I have signed up for 8 of 8 Seattle-to-Portland bicycle rides held early July.  This is a back-to-back century ride, and you have to train for it.  That gets me out there.

    Interesting too that when I chose my new place to move to, it was the one with good walking/cycling/running trails right out my front door.  I have that here in Seattle too.  This means I get out.

    Having said all this, I didn't get as much exercise in January as I would have liked.  But will get it in gear starting today.  35 mile ride planned and that will do wonders to kick things up a notch and also keep my brain revved.  The other reason to get it in gear. - Claire

    I feel like I did watch what I ate and exercised regularly in January but alas, no weight loss.  My goal for February is to keep a food journal.  Maybe that will help?  I went to college in Denver so go Broncos!

    Starting week 3 of WW and am doing well. Continuing to lose slowly and have exercised daily during the week. Making good food choices most the time

    codavis and Claire, hope you have a nice time tomorrow and good luck to your team!

    Claire, you sound like you are having a lot of fun keeping fit!  I know skiing has really not been so great this year in the west, they have all the snow in the east!  I had a bi lateral mastectomy in November so we didn't make plans, now it is just as well!  Next year!!!

    And we roast lots of veggies, but until recently my son has had no interest.  He is on the autism spectrum, and although he has a more varied diet than a lot of kiddos (esp those on the autism spectrum) he has been somewhat rigid about food.  We have jumped many hurdles lately and partly because of my diagnosis.  I tell him some foods fight cancer, others help it grow.  He has really expanded his eating (had a Portobello mushroom sandwich the other day!)  So I have him helping in the kitchen and he is trying more.  He is so funny about food, will eat dragon fruit but not an apple.  LOves sushi and fish roe, seaweed, edamame  but ewwwee a raw carrot, or an oatmeal cookie w raisin, yuck!????  No way.  Too funny, his likes and dislikes!!!

    One of my new favorites is butternut squash roasted in coconut oil w a little sea salt.  YUM!

    Solen, one of my granddaughters is on the autism spectrum too, so I know what you mean. It is very hard to get her to eat much of anything. She is almost six and from the time she was a toddler she has been drawn to random strong flavors, like coffee, horseradish, etc, but never wants to eat very much of anything, healthy or otherwise. It's a struggle for my daughter. 

    I am eating more salads, fruits and veggies and still mining the goldmine of info in "Eating on the Wild Side." 

    Like Claire, I make weight lifting a regular part of my fitness routine. Besides the benefits she mentioned, it's also great for bone density, which I hope will help counteract the effects of anastrozole. Although I have free weights at home, I mostly use the weight machines at the gym.
