Cherrie, did you have any problem getting in and out of the recliner by yourself? I don't want to have to wake up my DH every time I have to go pee, etc.  He will need to sleep some time, poor guy.

hey bailey.....spent today snowshoeing in the mountains with my BFF, tomorrow I have a massage booked then coffee with another bco contact in Calgary, then I call to get my OR time.....Wednesday....I'm just going to show up! That's my plan!! I really really really hope this anesthesia doesn't make me vomitateous....because that is the norm for me.

goldie....codeine makes me so ill, I'd rather just suffer the pain of surgery or the coughing of pneumonia....

Hubby has confessed that he asked for the wrong days off...so I'll be on my own the day after...I figure I'll be ok.....right?????

Yes, Nihani. I think you will be fine.  Truly, no tummy incision, etc.  You will be good.

I use to be that way with codeine, but now we are friends...lol

Oh, this last time I asked them not to let me get nauseous, and whatever they did worked.  I was good.

nihahi -  did you ever try the patch for nausea?  My biggest fear of diep is the nausea!  I had read about how great the patch is and had a chance to try it out last week.  I was under general anesthesia for almost 3 hours - woke up and NO NAUSEA!  It was fabulous!  I asked the anesthesiologist why it is not always used - he said that they only give it to people that ask.  It costs them $1.50 & the only side effect is a dry mouth.  You can keep it on for 3 days.

yeup....tried the patch and different combos of drugs with every surgery I've ever had, and I have had prolonged nausea and vomiting with every surgery. Nothing seems to work.....I'm just a "barfer", but with every surgery, I go in hoping that THIS time it will be different.

Help, I am going to be up all night trying to make this decision.  Do I have my diep ASAP and get it over with, or do I enjoy the nicest time of the year in Texas, and have my diep during hibernation time during the heat of the summer? I missed last spring, and I want to get my garden in shape, and ride my bike, and take my grandkids to the park, and everything I have been missing.  Then, when it's a million degrees outside I can sit in here and recover.  I am afraid if I have it in late March, early April by the time I recuperate I will be stuck inside anyway because of the heat, and I feel like I have missed almost a whole year already. I don't want to do it again.  Ugh!!!!!!!!!!

Nihahi.....yes you should be ok alone the next day....I was. And I don't recall if I posted or not but my DH called me the day before surgery and said, "Who is taking you to your surgery?"

    WTF????

He got the day off (and I found the text I sent him to take the 19th off.....not to mention I was running around like crazy woman getting ready for surgery and Christmas and was very vocal at times lol)

    But I digress.

The nice anesthesiologist of my stage II gave me the Emend pill for nausea, and put the little 3 day patch behind my ear AND gave me something else IV during surgery. No nausea no vomiting....first time in the history of EVER. Gotta go big guns on me apparently. I couldn't tell you if I had any side effects from all of it other than dry mouth. I was pretty loopy on the Nucynta for a while there....which did end up making me nauseous after the three day patch came off :( but I always have Compazine so it was ok.

Good Morning all!  I have a cup of coffee with my gas fire going.  You would think I would be on top of the word!   Today is going to feel like a SAD dad.  What is wrong with me?  I would just settle for a cup of coffee with but the snow is hindering getting outside.   I have played music that is fund and enjoing but this mood is being a pain in my backside.  Perhaps, I should return to bed and get up on the other side!!  My mom swears it worked when we were toddles!   Well, atleat I have you gals who probably understand this more that I do.  Hope your day is better than mine.      ThumbsDown

nihahi, Kelleyb, maggie85- the first of our 2014 ladies! Wishing you smooth procedures tomorrow and nice fast healing afterwards.

Nihahi- as soon as my anesthesiologist walks in the room I say " hi, I am a thrower upper!" Haha well the past three surgeries I have had no problem at all and I am keeping my fingers crossed that you wake up tomorrow nauseous free! I had the emend before surgery, the patch, something during surgery and odansetron after and at home. I will drink an extra cup of coffee just for you tomorrow...it's the least I could do right!!

Maggie and Kelly.....we veterans of the first stage, have been where you are.....1 more day....this surgery is totally doable and so worth it for most of us. Safe surgeries and gentle healing to you....we'll all be thinking of you. (ignore my nattering about stage 2...I'm just being stupid about it.)

you guys are killing me! In the nicest possible way. After seeing my N&V this time, my PS said he'd talk to the anesthesia dude for this one. It was the best of the lot, compared to previous bouts.....Keep those fingers crossed!

Lucy....I bequeath my "cuppa" tomorrow to you....as you say, it's the least I can do. It'll be one small spoon of evaporated cane sugar and a touch of cream. Enjoy!!!!! I'm currently savouring this mornings dose!

goldie....no one can pick the right time for you, and for some of us, picking the timing wasn't part of the deal. If you do have lots of "say" in the "when", my only comment would be that walking.....often and lots....in gradual increments has usually been a big part of recovery. Planning to hibernate in the house wouldn't have been the answer to walking for me. I did have the long hallways in our condo to help me get started, but I needed the fresh air, mentally/emotionally, to really start to recover. I really feel for the northern gals now, like curly, torontogirl and others, because getting out to walk certainly isn't in the cards for them at this time. I remember last summer I suggested you go to a mall to get some walks in and be out of the heat, but I don't know if that worked for you. Good luck with your decision....I'm sure it'll work out in someway.

katski....What's got you down....is it winter blues or something else???? Sending you hugs. ((((X))))

    Hi all,

Jumping into this thread to say hi and wish Kelly, Maggie and Nihahi good luck tomorrow.  You guys will do great!

I am almost four weeks out from surgery.  Had double mast, snb on one side and diep and it took just under 12 hours.  There were two surgeons for the recon, plus fellows and residents, but took longer than expected because they had trouble with one side.  Ended up using both the siea and diep connections on that side.

Since then, I have been lucky.  No real pain and no nausea.  I am holding on to one pesky drain, and my body seems to be having trouble absorbing some of the dissovable stitches, which has created some irritation areas in the incisions.  I have an appointment with the PS today, so we will see what he says.

    Take care everyone,

    Ridley

Nihahi, you have my sincerest sympathy on being a post-op puker.  Absolutely the worst.  You've probably been there, done that, but have you been given ondansetron (Zofran)?  It works miracles, in my experience.  Maybe if you took one pre-op it could help forestall any chow-blowing issues for you.

The scopalomine patch behind the ear works well for some, and is not helpful for others.  You've probably tried that, too!

Nihahi, I am so sensitive, I even throw up after conscious sedation.  I always tell my doctors and nurses I am allergic to narcotics and list it on my medical history under allergies.  Then I acknowledge that it really isn't an allergy, but all narcotics make me deathly ill, even codeine.  It gets their attention!  One hospital even put one of those allergy bands on my arm, which gets everyone asking what my symptoms are when given narcotics.  The patch works for me.  I'm sure they will work with you.  Sending you non-vomiting energy!

Goldie, remember you will have a couple of stage 2's possibly, with 3 months between each phase, then nipples, another 3 month wait for tattoos. More than likely, if you go head & do your DIEP as soon as possible, you will still be inside during the Texas heat recuperating from stage 2.  You can look forward to doing your bike riding & gardening during the Fall. You can have fun with your grandkids no matter the season.  The yard can wait - mine did. Plus with the pain from your implants, it will be harder to thoroughly enjoy any activities until you get your implants out & finalize your reconstruction journey.

Nihani, hopefully all the great suggestions well get you through this barf free!!!  Who knows?!!

As far as my surgery date.  I picked one right in the middle.  A compromise.  It's before the truly brutal heat hits, but after the temperate days of spring.  I will be able to get out to walk in the morning and evenings still with a June 2nd date!!!!  Yes, I picked it with the help of Kuka.  If I went a month later it would be to hot to walk at all.  It is nice to have a choice this time.  My bmx was do it now, or else.  I feel more in control this time.  I am also not so freaked out because I have something on my chest, albeit uncomfortable, but something is there.

LOL, Nihani...yes.  I am dropping off my CAT scan of my tummy to the new guy tomorrow.  I already warned him about the liver lesions and that they are incidentalomas,  and the only thing we have to worry about is that he feels I have good vessels.

If I don't get to say it again tonight, let me say it now....GOOD LUCK tomorrow. It's all good.  I am sure we will be talking to you tomorrow evening.

Gosh, Nihani.  It sure took them a long time to get around to your stage 2.  I thought I have been marinating too long.  You have been too.  Of course Wilbur will be there.  He wouldn't miss this for anything.

goldie...I had swelling in the flap that resolved very slowly, and my PS and I prefered to wait and see how much things resolved "naturally", before doing any work to gain symmetry. However, saying that, he does attempt to get good symmetry at the initial surgery, as well as a healthy vascular connection and good tummy closure.

See, Nihani.  I wish more docs were like that.  I think a lot of them have an attitude that there is going to be a stage 2, so let's just get this done and worry about the final results at stage 2.  Mentally, I don't think that is good for a lot of us.  We get scared they won't be able to fix it. That we will look like this forever, etc.  I think they should strive for best possible initial outcome for us, and for them.  I like your doc's approach.  I think mine has that attitude too.  Let's get it to look the best we can from the beginning.  Now, saying all that, I know there are situation where they just need to get that flap viable, and then worry about aesthetics later. And, those guys are geniuses too.  Rotating flaps, etc.  It's all amazing, isn't it?

One of the women who works at my PS office (I think he hires all his ex patients) had her tummy cut one time for her diep.  No revision, and it looks great. She is happy to show it to you.  She was back to work in 2 weeks.  A little soon for my taste, but she was very young and stronger than us old girls who need more time.

Good luck tomorrow, ladies! We are cheering you on!

jmb5, would you put me on the list for nipples on Feb. 7th? Lol, it just sounds so weird saying that. "I'll have some wine and some nipples, please." However, I will be glad to get that DONE.

Goldie, good for you for picking a date! You know more than anyone about DIEP without having had it yet! You will do great. Probably having DIEP in summer is better than having Stage II. I remember how uncomfortable and irritated Kuka was, having to wear compression in the summertime in the Texas heat. I have done a lot of walking in malls but in my case it was to escape inclement weather during recovery.
