Multivitamin researchers say - find no health benefits
Multivitamin researchers say "case is closed" after studies find no health benefits

Although the study bothered me a bit, there is no way I am going to stop taking my Vitamin D, Omega's and Calcium.
Not worth the risk.
-
Yes - I feel the same. Sometimes I wonder about the data/information collected and discussed in these articles......
-
If I understand the actual study correctly, they are talking about the use of multivitamins by otherwise healthy individuals. And, in a way, the findings make sense in this context. If you are healthy with no medical issues and no nutrient deficiency, then taking a multivitamin is not going to make you healthier. It probably won't stave off CVD or cancer, especially if you are not "at risk" (i.e., genetic mutation, family history, etc.) for those conditions. So, for me, the results of this study aren't surprising.
I will be more interested in what the findings would be if they do the same type of study on people who already have medical issues, an increased risk, and/or nutrient diffiencies and what the impact multivitamins and supplements would have on their outcomes.

SelenaWolf, That is how I read it too. For healthy people who have no nutrient deficiencies it is a pointless tablet.
And erinm216 - keep taking it - I am going to keep taking all my supplements because not only do I have BC but have in blood tests I am deficient in Vit D and other things....

My cardiologist's NP sees no point in my taking multi vitamins since I'm basically healthy. I do take calcium with D though, since I have osteoporosis.

Vitamins Might Reduce Breast Cancer Mortality
Older women who developed invasive breast cancer while taking multivitamin supplements with minerals had a 30% lower rate of breast cancer mortality than women who did not take supplements, according to an analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The finding was published online October 7 in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.
"Our data suggest that multivitamins with minerals [MVM] have a protective role for women with breast cancer. Ours is the largest study of multivitamin supplements in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors, so we had a lot of power to uncover these associations," lead author Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, MD, distinguished university professor emerita of epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, in Bronx, New York

Conflicting information( as is usually the case)---sigh----
-
Yes -- just to make us crazy.....
-
gary said the other day that the studies nixing daily vitamins is simply untrue
-
They probably used poor quality vitamins that don't dissolve. Check out this xray
-
I would love to hear the response from Centrum regarding this X-ray and their vitamin!

Thanks, co418 for posting the second study.
I do believe in vitamins and my naturopath recommends them. If you look at nutritional analysis of food nutrients now compared to the past, food today has less nutrients. Our soil isn't as good as it used to be. And there is compelling research with vitamin D and omega 3 oils.
When this study came out it did give me pause. Wonder who funded it and what type of vitamins it used. Anyhow I'm sticking with my supplements! Doctors receive very little training in nutrition so I would never ask a doctor or nurse for nutrition advice. LOL.

Does anyone read "CURE" magazine? It's free to Cancer patients. In the last issue (winter 2012, page 46) there is an article that states some micronutrients can actually increase some kinds of cancer. Their recommendation is to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, ect. so you are less likely to overdose.
I still take a small dose multivitamin, probiotic, calcium with D and turmeric daily.
-
I take no pills of any kind thinking that it's a slippery slope. I do juice daily however
