A connection between breast cancer and bone cancer

Hi, I have not been on this site in a very long time but have come up with symptoms that might be pointing to bone problems.

I had dcis in 2007 but it was all removed. Recently I have been having pain in my arms especially if I move it towards my back. I noticed alot of pain in my arm muscles if I lift my bed covers to rearrange it. I go to a nuerologist and I mentioned my pain. Had extensive blood work but nothing irregular except for a high level of alkaline phostofase (?) of 120 which is double the level it should be. Then I had a bone xray of my shoulder blade and it showed a 1.5cm dense sclerosis. Tomorrow I will have a full body dye bone scan to see what is going on.

My question is what is the percentage of it being bone cancer since I had breast cancer? I know one possibility may be a bone island but the other is bone cancer. If it is bone cancer what is the percentage of recover from a secondary cancer?

Any other information you may have that I may not have asked I would appreciate it.

KCA, I think it would be a lot more likely that it would be breast cancer which has metasticized to the bone rather than a new primary bone cancer.

If it should turn out that it is metasticized breast cancer that would make you Stage IV, which is not curable, but many women live many years with this, especially if it is only to the bones.

Also, if you had pure DCIS, it is incapable of metastasizing to the bone, so for that to happen you either would have had to have had an undetected new primary or an undetected invasive recurrence, both of which are VERY unlikely.   There are many things that could be wrong other than cancer, although I understand why your mind goes there.   Try not to worry until you get a definitive diagnosis.

To answer your question though, I don't know of any connection between breast cancer and primary bone cancer (in other words, cancer than originated in the bone, not the breast).   I would imagine, in that case, that your chances of recovery would depend on details of your new diagnosis, and be independent of your previous breast cancer treatment.

So it would be a different cancer not a non malignant tumor? There were tracers that were found on my elbows, shoulders and my scurum on both sides from the only pictures I saw. The scurum is probably not from any cancer but some form of injury. Hopefully I'll know something tomorrow but since its new years on Wednesday I wont know the full results till Thursday which is a bummer.

    Thanks for your responses.

kca, they are ruling out that you had a missed invasive breast cancer that has now metastasized or an invasive/new invasive cancer that has metastasized.  Like Annette mentioned if you had pure DCIS then metastasis is unlikely.  However, your doctors are just being diligent in making sure that is not what happened.

You need to see a specialist, a bone physician, as with your increase in alkaline phosphatase  (ALP) it is more likely that what they are seeing is Paget's disease of the bone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paget's_disease_of_bone (NOT at all related to breast cancer, or Paget's disease of the breast).  I only know about this because I too am being followed for a very large sclerotic lesion, and for the same reason.  For me, Paget's disease of the bone has been ruled out, and I did not have an increase in ALP.    I really hope that yours is simply a bone island.  Good luck.  I know how stressful this can be.

kca - It is really impossible to say. The first likelihood is that it is not cancer at all, but something else. If it were cancer then it could be bone cancer (which you don't have an increased likelihood of having because of the breast cancer) or it could be breast cancer mets which is unlikely unless as Annette says you had a primary invasive recurrence or new primary breast cancer which has metastasized.

It's really hard to wait, but try not to let your mind go to the worst cases. Many things show up on scans that are not cancer. We will all be hoping for you that no kind of cancer is found. (((hug)))

Thank you ladies for your encouragement. I had DCIS HR+ stage 0. I will post with the results as soon as I know.
