pain in ribs.
I wonder if I throw this out some one may be able to help me please.
I finished active b/c treatment 1 year ago. About 4/5 months ago I started to get pain/aching in my left rib cage, almost constant. This is the opposite side to my mx. It is so painful.
I haven't been able to get onto it as I perhaps should have done as other areas of my health have not been good and I have had ongoing treatment including a big gynae op just over 2 weeks ago. I have mentioned this pain to 2 of my other teams (gastro/gynae). They could find no explanation. I have had MRI (pelvic) for the ovarian cyst (now removed) and in the summer a clear bone scan.
Because of all my other tx's I feel confused about my general health. I have asked to speak with my breast nurse (hopefully Mon now). I don't know what to ask for. Or if I should just put up with it?. Last b/c check was about 4 months ago. The doc did not allow me to speak, just said 'yes, all looks good, here'. I left without mentioning it.
At times, I am feeling desperate/weary as to what is going on here.

I recently started having pain in ribs too on cancer side. I will keep in tough and let you know what I find out. -
Mariasnow,
yes I would be interested to know what they say to you. I told my GP about the pain and she thought mononeuropathy as a result of chemo,.....but I have not heard of this and remain unconvinced... i just keep thinking it must be mets. -
I'm worried about the same thing. It hurts to the touch. Can't be normal. I also have a suspicious lump that I hope will be diagnosed next week. I am not coping in the least unless you call not showering, laying on the couch dirty and eating chocolate coping. -
ladies, I suggest you check with your oncologists.
-
if you had radiation it could be costochondriasis - a type of arthritis -
Changes,
Yes, I considered that, but I thought costochondriasis (due to radiation) would show in the radiated side? Mine is the opposite side. -
I am going to see my breast cancer nurse tomorrow morning about this. It's just so never ending. this is 3 weeks after my gynae op.
I don't think I can be bothered to get anxious.
Does anyone know what's likely to happen? tests etc?
Thank-you. -
Hello Wintersocks and Maria Snow
I am on a similar treatment schedule to you and have had a slight pain in the ribs and itching on and off all year.
Just finished a course of antibiotics for a chest infection and pain/itching gone.
Hope this helps while you wait to see your medical people.
Good luck
Alice -
reporting in after seeing the surgeon. She appeared largely unconcerned about the pain in my ribs, especially as I had a clear bone scan earlier in the summer. She said it wasn't mets.
I guess I will have to revisit the GP and ask her if she can give me something for the pain. -
hello MariaSnow, I have the same symptoms, in my radiated side. but my MO said could be costhocondrites ( it is the cartilage between sternum and ribs) and to use some antiinflamatory ointment........he'll schedule me for a bonscan next month. you have the pain just at touching? me yes, and never when I move/swim/yoga. if my bra is close, of course I have the pain. ( like a knife in ribs)
-
hello again, wintersocks did you try arnica gel?
for me is working for a while. .few hours.
-
Wintersocks
Excellent news re mets!
Hope your GP can help.
Best wishes
Alice -
I have pain in my opposite rib as well. Just had x rays and CT -both were normal I had a bone scan in May that did show arthritis in ribs bilaterally but it never hurt before. I had a bilateral mastectomy in April 2011. I had 4 cycles TCH then went on to have 13 more Herceptin which i completed in June 2012 I took tamoxifen for 1 and 1/2 years - now take arimidex since having TLH/ BSO I have a lot of pain but all of my tests have come back negative. I guess it is from Arimidex?? -
Hi Kellyuhope,
Yes I guess it might be from Arimidex. I am on Letrozole. I know they cause joint pain, but rib pain? - possible. Did you get chemo? My GP said of the pain - it was from chemo - mononeuropathy. So, I am going back to see her.
Alicethecat (fab name!). Thank-you for your best wishes!
Ashley2 - no, I have not tried Arnica, perhaps I might, but the pain is so bad, I might need a ton of it. I am going to ask about anti-inflammatories, perhaps they may help.
I cannot understand why there isn't a definite diagnosis for this problem.... -
I just added all of my surgeries and treatment. Yes, I had chemo and was on tamoxifen now on arimidex -
a lot has happened. I had to have the lump removed. I'm awaiting pathology and scared out of my mind. I feel like me whole life will change and my home is at risk because my income will be at risk and I just don't know if I will do chemo again and put my income and home at risk. I don't know what else to do. Cancer sucks and cancer treatment is a gift and also sucks. I read all the survival stats for local and regional recurrence stats. I guess I will be lucky if it is only local or regional. Survival stats with treatment are around 55% for 5 years according to various sites I've read. It's not a death sentence but not that far off. -
I also just recently, 3 days ago, started having rib pain when I reach high, touch, lay on that side, or bra against the spot. It is under my treated breast. I was diagnosed in June of last year and had lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. Lots of worries, have not called oncologist yet. It seems like as soon as the treatments done, they don't really care about you coping with side effects. If rib pain won't go away this week, I am going to call my oncologist. I have lots of join pains and stiffness from Anestrozole (Arimidex), neuropathy in my feet and hands, I also to my surprise was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and researching it found out if you had steroids as part of your chemo, you are at high risk of diabetes, steroids alter islets cells in pancreas and set the stage for diabetes, I didn't know that, if I knew I would never take steroids... Oncologist either don't know or ignore to alert patients of possible effects.
For pains and neuropathy I started taken Lyrica, still trying to determine teh right dose...

My biopsy came back as a lymphatic cyst and I am still NED. Couldn't be more grateful.

Mariasnow: What terrific news to receive before the holidays. So very happy for you. Merry Christmas!!!!
-
Im so happy for you!!!
-
Mariasnow,
So so pleased for you! and happy Christmas too!
-
My whole family and boyfriend breathed a major sigh of relief...not to mention me! I'm monitoring a small pimple-looking bump on my ribcage right now too. If it isn't gone, in January, I will be off to the doctor. I have my nipple reconstruction scheduled for 2/25. At that point, my doc said he could remove a mole or two or anything suspicious in the area for biopsy.
-
Mariasnow,
gosh, we are always monitoring something from now on! I think that's just the way it's going to be for us. My rib pain is very bad today. I will tell GP when I see her and maybe ask for anti-inflammatory drugs as not sure what else to do.
-
No kidding, Wintersocks! It is a blessing on any day we feel well and aren't worrying too much!
-
My MO sent me to OT for the pain. So far not having much luck. still have pain when touching and stretching on effected side. Not sure what to do
-
I guess I am lucky in that I have physio (private) and so have learned a lot about how the body works. We have a fascia of tissue that goes down along the ribs and so pain in ribs post MX is very common.......it can also be referred to the other side of your ribs as we also have bands of muscle that connect to our sternum so tension on one side will create a knock on effect on the other side. Since my failed recon I have lots of rib pain again, it had almost gone before........
I comfort myself with the thought that lobular tends to come back a lot later than other kinds of cancer so its too early for me!!
-
i am so glad it turned out well for you wintersocks. i love cysts! cysts are great! i want one! as it is, i have been having ribpain for months. finally we looked. three spots of concern, and a biopsy for me in a week. one, right on my rib, cancerside, and two, they said twins very small in outside curve of breast. well, where there used to be a pretty curve. it was funny, i used to think i had the prettiest armpits, and just a regular tomboy look everywhere else. now i just consider my axilla a dangerzone. anyway, i do know my body, and whatever it is, i guess i want to know...thanks
-
kathec,
you are kind, thanks for being pleased about my cysts!! (this breast cancer world is crazy eh?). I am thinking about you as the medics try to find out what is happening...
Please keep in touch, of course I will be keeping all crossed.
-
hiya, wintersocks. just wanted to say, the man was able to biopsy my "spots" and then as there was some question about me going back on tamoxifen, when i called the next day to find that out, i found out accidentally that they were benign glandular tissue. so they poked some holes in too nodes. but i guess i will have to wait for the follow up consult, to find out more, and pick up path report to find out why they were inflamed or whatever. they wouldnt say anything else. problem is, is that i feel for certain, that there are more spots like that in same quadrant, but i for. sure. do not want. ANY MORE BIOPSIES!!!!! Ever.
-
kathec,
Gosh, so you really have not got the complete picture yet? when will you know what is going on for sure?
I am with you on the biopsy front. I too never ever want to have them done again, but I think I probably will have to
I hope your weather is good in LA? I would love to see California..
Here in Blighty, it is cold. There doesn't feel a lot to look forward to....
