How vain are you?

Yes, I'm sure the chemicals in hair color are not good, but I'm not ready to be grey haired yet. I'm already stage IV so, I indulge myself and don't look back.
Blessings, if anyone was scraping your gel polish off, they didn't know what they were doing! Gel Polish is soak off. Most people do this by soaking a cotton pad in acetone (I mix mine with glycerin so it is not so drying), placing the cotton pad on the nail and wrapping with foil. After about 15 minutes, it will come right off in flaky bits and you can use the cotton pad to nudge off any bits that stick. While nails are wrapped, you can depend up the process with heat. I use a heated eye pillow. No scraping ever!
Now I must return to my regularly scheduled field of expertise, education, not amateur nail tech -
HI Blessings! I love "Not your Daughter's" jeans too!
Isn't it funny, I have shoes that I look at to,o! I will never part with them!
Shrimply Divine what a great name. I used to wear a color on my toes called "I'm not really a waitress!" I have just invested in a new Gel nail polish system called "Haute", no base coat and no topcoat, LED, not UV light and Toluene and Formaldehyde free. Waiting for it to be delivered any time. If there is any truth in the instructional video, it will be easy to remove without damage to the natural nail, we'll see! I always had acrylic nails, but after moving here, to the country, I found that there wasn't a technician close by, and it wasn't really the place for those full on perfect nails.
Hi wyo! No problem.......You wrote Australia, the way we say it!LOL
As you can see by my pic, I don't color my hair. That pic is about 4 years ago, and I just turned 60 in July. I went grey very young, was originally almost ebony color so used to color it, but one day just decided I was over it. I had it cut uber short and let it grow out. It became this platinum color fairly quickly.
I absolutely believe that at least some of my health issues were caused by my time in the tint room in my teens when I was doing my hairdressing apprenticeship, add to that all the color I used over the years and I am sure I had chemical overload.
I haven't ever really looked into it, because I don't need to color my hair, but there was a chain of salons that opened in Melbourne a few years ago that claim to be chemical free salons with color that it said to be very safe. I don't recall the name. I would imagine a search of "Organic" "Chemical Free" or "Safe" hair color would be a way to find out what's around. -
wyo - I never heard of Beyond the Rack! So of course I checked it out... those are some deals on NYDJ!!!! My Nordie's stylist was helping me pick out new clothes... she looked at me and said "You're about an 8"... I laughed hysterically and made her bring me some 12s. (I had been wearing 18s) I tried them on and they were too big. She brought out the 8s she wanted me to try on originally, and they fit. I burst into tears. And bought every color and style. Now I've put on about 15 pounds thanks to the AI, so I'll probably have a huge muffin top, but who cares. My butt will look good. Thanks for the tip!
I'll ask my hairdresser what brand of color she uses on my hair. She says it;s the gentlest one she has. It's permanent, and lasts a long time.
exbrnxgrl - my sweet little pedicurist convinced me to try gel polish nails. She said there was absolutely no scraping. She was sort of right. She soaked a cotton ball in acetone, put it on my nail, then wrapped the whole end of my finger in foil. I sat there and read gossip magazines while it soaked off. But the occasionally, the polish never came off completely. She had to use an orange stick wrapped with soaked cotton to nudge the sticky parts off, and at one point, she used a clipper to pull back a section of solid polish. (I never let her do that again.) Once I saw the damage that was being done, I said forget it. I absolutely loved the way the gel polish manicures looked, but they started lifting before the three weeks was up, and I decided it wasn't worth it any more. Funny - my pedicures last longer than it takes for my toenails to grow out, and no one ever sees them, but I can't go without polish on my toenails! -
Hi exbrnxgrl! I missed your post, must have been posting at the same time.
Do you mind if I ask what kind of polish you are using. I am new to this gel polish application.
Blessings, I just tried to sign up for that site too, but it is only for US and Canada. -
Wyo, I vaguely remember a discussion about hair color, and apparently it is not a problem. Back in the bad old days, certain colors apparently had something really vile in them, but that is no longer the case. As you can tell on that other thread, you have to be careful about sources -
momine,
As long as one does not color ones hair during stormy weather, there should be no problem. I heard this on the radio...
Ariom,
I mostly use Red Carpet Manicure which is the at home version of Gelish. Gelish is a very popular brand used in salons but it can be purchased by non professionals as well. It does involve a base coat and topcoat but uses an LED lamp. I think Shellac may be the only brand around that still uses only UV lamps. It's fairly easy to use and my best advice is to apply in very thin coats. If it looks streaky, your second or third coat will make it opaque. Clean up any excess polish on skin or cuticle before curing. It's very weird because it will never air dry but is completely dry after curing under the lamp. I never leave mine on for more than two weeks because I like to change colors. Have fun with it!
Caryn -
Thanks Caryn, appreciate it! -
As promised, the suede shoes in bordeaux: -
Ariom, unless the pre-op paper says no make-up, I at least put on a little foundation and blush because I look so ghastly when I come out of anesthesia!
Wyo, when I originally had my BMX, I was a wreck over how I would look with and (without clothes). That was back in 2000 and there weren't a lot of places on the internet to see pictures of women post surgery. I feared I would be going around in baggy shirts and sweats for the rest of my life! Back then, in my 40's, a lot of my clothes were more form fitting than they are now. Now I look more for body skimming clothing, it hides a multitude of belly issues brought on by menopause.
momine, you look great! as do the shoes! -
Beautiful shoes, beautiful lady. All of you are beautiful!! -
exbrnxgrl - ooooh, I'll have to pick up some glycerin and try it the next time I take off my gel polish, and try the heat. Those are great tips.
I've been going with bare nails for the last week and a half due to surgery on MondayApparently they don't want me to have polish on my nails for surgery. The nurse at my pre-op appointment commented on how she loved the colour I was wearing then sadly told me I could not have any on for the procedure. As soon as I'm up to it, the polish is going back on! I have an at home kit so no need to go out. Simple luxuries...
-
Momine, as I expected, you, and the shoes, are just stunning! -
Oncearunner, I too been told that about polish during surgery. Also, nurses are not supposed to ever wear polish around patients. I think it has to do with a risk of spreading germs, but may not be remembering correctly.
It's Aromasin's fault! -
Thank you all, you guys are like having a personal cheer leading squad. Love it! -
Momine... W.O.W. I`m speechless. You musted have stopped traffic, looking like that. -
Selena, lol, you are such a nice girl -
Kay, lol, and thanks! -
MOMINE - gorgeous, just gorgeous. Oh, what I wouldn't give to be that thin ;( Alas, in my next life. Fabulous, stunning!
ANOHKI - ALERT, ALERT, ALERT 25% off sale until Sunday ( tomorrow) night!!!!!!

Happy Scarves everyone - remember, the sarongs make GORGEOUS shawls. ENJOY. -
momine you look great! I really wish they had that shoe brand in the States. -
sunflowers,
Thanks for the link. I love scarves. Must be the ex-flight attendant in me! -
oh no- I am a scarf-aholic pick them up all over the world- I took one look at this sight and thought uh oh. Thanks for all the support on hair color- if my hair was all one color I would not be so concerned its that yucky salt/pepper thing with more and more salt, Ariom if my hair was the color of yours I would not color it either-fabulous and you have a great cut/style too. -
Sunflowers, I used to be heavier, but lost weight during chemo (also, it was a lucky angle).
Brnx, thanks. I am toying with starting some sort of e-marketing thing, although even if I ever mange, it would be EU-based. There are so many great Greek products that really don't get the exposure they deserve. -
Thanks wyo, I used to wear my hair really long when I was dark, but the white looks much better very short.
I am a scarf collector too!
Momine, you look just fabulous, and I love the shoes! That white jacket is gorgeous too!
Bren, I have never been to surgery without makeup, not a full face, just enough that I feel ok with it. I always have bare nails though!
My family thought I was mad when I went into labor early with my Daughter, who was going to be a caesar anyway. I took a shower and put on my makeup before I would go to the Hospital, even though it was past midnight! Did I mention I was vain? I was only 24 at the time! LOL -
I love your hair also Ariom! Growing up in the South I never was a lot into scarves. After moving to the Midwest 22 years ago, I viewed them strictly as neck warmers (even though they, of course, had to match whatever else I was wearing :-). But I think the scarves on that site could easily hook me in! -
Thank you Yorkiemom! I am lucky that my hair went to platinum and not just grey. I still have people ask me where I have my hair colored!
I have all my Winter scarves put away now, in a big tub, and have brought out all my Summer weight ones. I love the fine linen scarves with linen pants, but it soon gets too hot here, for any scarves at all.
Sunflowers, when I first came home after my surgery, it was so hot that I wore a beautiful silk sarong tied in a halter around my neck and pinned in the "modesty" pad thingy from a Genie bra into the sarong so It didn't brush against my skin. It worked a treat, no one could believe I had just lost a breast. -
momine,
Just looked at the vavoulas FB page and was drooling over some of the boots and, of course, my great love, sandals. Love them!
Just ordered two of the anokhi scarves with the discount!
Caryn -
My goodness what beautiful women you all are!
Caryn, even though my initials are LS, I've never owned a chatelaine purse. So as far as I know it's never been to Israel.
Me, vain? I'm the one who wore makeup to every single chemo tx. So that sure qualifies me.
I'm an Orthodox Jew so I've covered my hair since I'm married. Sometimes I wear wigs, but I do love matching my head covering to what I'm wearing. In general I love blending my clothes for color matching.
When I was bald, no one saw my bald head. No one. That includes my DH - I slept with a soft cotton cap. There are those who look good bald, but I am not one of them. I wore my wig more often then since the bangs helped camouflage the lack of eyebrows (used makeup but it has its drawbacks).
I am so technologically challenged that I haven't even figured out how to post pictures on FB. All the one I have there are tagged, mostly from my kids. Anyone who wants to see them can send me a PM so I can friend you.
Leah -
Leah, I wore scarves during chemo. I have a lovely, much older friend from Israel. She and her family are very secular, "modern" Israelis - of the old borderline socialist, sabra kind. My friend was wonderful through my illness, but every time she visited and saw my scarf she would would wince and tell me I looked so Orthodox. I always told her that I am Orthodox, Greek-Orthodox, that is. Welcome!
-
Momine, sometimes I see pictures of the ladies here with scarves and I do a double take and think, "Is she from my neighborhood?"
Yup, you're Orthodox all right!
Leah -
My husband NEVER saw my bald head. Nobody did but me. I felt thoroughly comfortable when my hair was short-short-short, going without a wig, but bald? Not a chance in hell.
I'm one of those women who firmly believe that certain things need to be private in a marriage to preserve the "mystery" and romance. That means that sharing a bathroom is out; no I'm NOT going to show you how a tampon works, I don't care how curious you are; and I still don't fart in front of him. We've been married twenty years and he still hasn't seen me shave my legs.
