How vain are you?

Nancy, you look pretty cool, with and without hair. But, seriously now, how old are you? You look like a kid, but you also have a kid who looks all "growed up." Confused over here. -
Doesn't she? Nancy looks as young and fresh as a university student... Great photos!
[Purse fetishes are quite acceptable here on the Vanity thread.]
-
Nancy, you, and your daughter, are so pretty! I've learned on this board that people can still look great without hair!!
But, girls, seriously, you are giving me shoe and purse fever. A little voice in my head keeps repeating: "gotta have some new ones!" -
Nancy, one pair for every night right?? -
Seriously? One pair for day, a different pair for night with the appropriate change of purse. Shoes that go with dresses, shoes to wear with trousers, shoes to wear out to dinner. My current favourite pair #blissful sigh
-
VERY cute! -
Just love those shoes, but never could my poor feet endure a walk in them. -
Another trick for wearing tall shoes is to get gel insoles for the front. Dr. Scholl makes them (among others). The pads keep your feet from sliding forward in the shoe and getting mashed into the toe box. -
Love this thread! I guess I must be vain too, since I never leave the house without full makeup and my hair being done. There were only a few days during chemo that I was too sick to put on at least a little makeup. I figure if I do my hair and makeup in the morning, then I am ready for anything. I always like to look put together and stylish but sometimes it is only from the ankles up due to a few foot problems. I wish I could wear awesome heels, but sadly those days are over.
My DH makes fun of me because I even have to have my pj tops and bottoms match or coordinate, no clashing colors or prints! Not sure if that is because I am vain or OCD though! -
Oh, and all you ladies look FABULOUS! -
Bren, welcome to the "vain" thread! You look fabulous also! I'm loving hearing how others have to match their p.j.s! I really thought I must have an extreme case of O.C.D. all these years. But, I may be worse than most, because my headbands, which I use to pull back my hair before cleansing my face, also have to match everything! -
Just catching up here, after the big T-day feast. Even though the morning is a bit chilly, windows are open since my house still smells of sautéed onions. Love them, but the lingering scent is not wearing well.
Blue suede shoes- Wow! Gorgeous. I'd buy them in at least five colors if they were available in the US.
Spectator oxford/pumps- a beautiful classic.
Thank you to those who looked up Whiting&Davis and Mandalian. I know that we cannot own history, but besides the sheer beauty of the purses, I love the profound connection to the past they give me. I have a chatelaine purse complete with the original clip. The clip has initials engraved on the front. I often wonder who LS was and where this purse has been. The streets of London circa 1890? An urban girl who by marriage was forced to move to the rugged Western states? A gentle woman of the American south? The possibilities are tantalizing.
I wish we could post photos directly to this site since I don't use a photo sharing site, but if you pm me I'll send the link to my Pinterest page. Just relaxing in bed now, with a good cup of coffee and pink and lime green capri length pajamas. No Black Friday shopping for me, unless it's online!
Caryn -
My husband works in the fashion business (yeah, I know, GREAT, huh?) and, because I'm a little long-bodied compared to my legs, he taught me the trick of buying my jean lengths (or any trousers) with a 2" longer inseam than I normally would and always wear 3" heels. Va-VOOM!!! Instant long-legs! Now, of course, I'm too vain to NOT wear sky high heels with trousers 'cause I love the effect.
And my honey doesn't mind, that - when I have my heels on - I nearly 6' tall [well, 5'10½"] and tower over him. He says it's perfect, especially when we go dancing because, then, he gets to bury his face in my cleavage.
-
Brnx, I confess, I also have them in bordeaux.
Selena, Greek men love tall women. According to them, it shows off how manly they are if they can wrangle a woman taller than they. -
My husband would TOTALLY agree. He is so thoroughly comfortable with himself, that when I stand nearly 4" taller than he is, he beams proudly.
-
Good boy -
exbrxgrl... everytime I buy a new antique (i.e., furniture, china, silver, textile), I always wonder the same thing. Where did it come from? Did somebody love this as much as I do? Where has it been before it came to me? Sometimes I close my eyes and just try to "feel" what it's trying to tell me and my imagination takes off.
I have an antique silver dresser set, circa 1889, mirror, brush, comb all engraved with an "E" monogram for my real name, which is Elizabeth. The set sits on an 1929 fruitwood dressing table that I received from my grandmother's estate. When my hair was long, I used to sit in front of the mirror and brush my hair every night. And every night I wondered: who used to own this? Was her name Elizabeth too? Or was it Edith or Emma or Elise? Was it a birthday gift, a wedding gift? Did she take it with her when she travelled?
I love the sense of history antiques bring with the them.
-
I am into the old stuff too. My mother has a cedar chest with brass corners. It was her grandmother's trusseau chest. It was brought back from China by her dad (he was a captain and my g-g-grandpa) and has her initials on a brass plaque on the lid. I have told my mom that I want it to go to my DD (who has the same first initial). -
Nice!
-
Selena - I will have to read through here later but have CRACKED up reading the hair stories where your idea came from. Thanks for a great laugh. -
Sorry - I just drooled on your blue suede shoes....so jealous of anyone who can wear such gorgeous shoes...
but I'd have no place to wear them, I'm in the woods, literally, of rural MA, and my idea of a "busy" day is going to art class ;-)
JOY JOY JOY but I do love patterns, Anohki scarves, and the semiprecious stone jewelry I make..
clothes? jersey pants, turtle necks in winter, t shirts & Flax linen Floods in summer. Dat's it folks. Add Anoki shawl. done. -
I have managed to catch up. Love the vanities (yes plural). Some beeeutiful women on here.
Momine - Apologies if i have you confused with someone else. Didn't you make a gorgeous tucked dress (maroon or so) for a special event last year? -
Luvmy, you are close. The dress I made was a weird blue color. The night I did the MRI that led to my DX, we went straight to a stupid awards/benefit dinner, something we very rarely do. We have gone each of the two yeArs since, to mark the date. athe blue dress was made for the first anniversary. I'll post what i wore for the second (only because I wore the bordeaux version of the blue shoes) but tomorrow, because it is late and I am on my iPad right now.
We just came back from dinner. it was the T-day dinner of the Republicans Abroad (long story, don't ask,or do,your choice). The nice thing was that I was seated next to the guy who was the greek consul in NY 20 years ago. I had met him back then, and he is a very nice man, so I actually had a great time. You can't beat a gentleman for a dinner companion.
-
Momine - sounds like a lovely evening. What was for dinner? Just curious. -
Selena, Nancy, Yorkie, and Momine, you all look great! Selena, your hair looks exactly like mine... down to the color and length. Is yours super soft? Mine is. I'm not really vain. I grew up in CT and had I stayed there perhaps I'd be more so. I went from there to Colorado for 18 years (think Boulder CO). I don't wear heels or dresses... I dress up for weddings and I rarely go to those. I wear shorts most of the year with flip flops, running shoes, or my chucks. As soon as I shaved my head I began wearing hats. I don't own the baldness. Even though I'm not bald anymore (I have a 1/4" of hair) I still wear hats. -
Just caught up with this thread. What gorgeous, stylish, strong women we have here! Fabulous photos!
I used to wear sky high beautiful heels. I worked in the cosmetic industry, then for an International Airline, so was used to running around doing 12 hour shifts on marble floors, in heels!
Sadly, I can't wear them now, years of Rheumatoid Arthritis put an end to that, but I do have some fabulous shoes tucked away, wrapped in tissue for wearing out for dinner. I can manage house to car, car to table, table to car! LOL
Yep, I'd call that vain!
OH, and I wore makeup for my surgery.....Did I say I was vain? -
Hi all
I have migrated over from the headache-inducing other thread to this thread. Before I go off on a tangent I want to say Alegria shoes- for those who can't wear Dansko ( I can't they feel awful) this company makes really fun shoes, boots, rain booties you name it. Amazon has a fair selection to check out.
Second shoe tip Aerosole Benefit Pump- I have multiple pairs of these (blush) and they are my go to for work meetings- they are cute with a peep toe and bows but they are soooo comfortable- you can wear them and walk in them and they make your calves look stunning.
I am vain some days and disturbingly complacent others. When I was going to work during rads (just finished Wednesday) I made sure hair was done, make-up on, cute outfit check. People would say "you look so good" Kind of made me laugh if they were at the house in the morning when I got up or on saturday in my oversized "follow your heart" t-shirt an yoga pants. Now my concern is my lumpectomy- that breast is noticeably smaller and the other one is not that big anyway- I never realized that just about everything I own is somewhat form-fitting on top hmmmm
love this thread- -
OHMYGOSH - you ladies are GORGEOUS!!!
Love the haircut comments, too.... I think I know where those came from.
Those scarves are so beautiful!!! Just may have to investigate them further.
Ariom - I had a career in banking in the very early days - wore 4" heels and pantyhose (and a short dress) every single day, standing for 8+ hours. Now I can't imagine the torture. I do, however, keep a pair of black lace pumps in the back of my closet so I can take them out and look at them nostagically from time to time...
wyo - I can't wear Dansko either. Those Alegria shoes are SO CUTE, but sadly, I can't wear them. My summer go-to shoes are all Mephisto sandals. They cost the mortgage, but with plantar fasciitis, they're all I can wear. Everthing else gets an orthotic insert.
I used to be really vain.... and young....
I've kept my hair in a cute cut, and color it regularly. When I lost weight, I bought a ton of new clothes, but nothing fancy. I LOVE my "Not Your Daughter's Jeans", which make me look taller and skinnier. I have a bunch of those.
But in winter, most of the time you'll find me in long sweaters, leggings, and Uggs.
I wear make-up if I go somewhere special, and my contact lenses if it's REALLY special. But to Walmart? Sorry. You've all see the pics of Wally World customers. It's kind of like, why bother?
I haven't had to shave anywhere since menopause, but I do twice a year whether I need it or not!
I do get regular pedicures, and my signature color is "Shrimply Divine". I had gel polish manicures for a while, then I noticed that all my nails were getting white patches from scraping off the gel. So I quit, and am growing them out.
I turned 63 this week. Thankfully, DH, who is the same age, looks older than me, and twice now, someone has asked him if I were his daughter. WooHOO!!!! I guess THAT's vanity!!! -
Blessings-
don't know if you are a Beyond the Rack gal but they are having NMDJ on sale this weekend only some cute styles and even cords. I have to try them on at nordstrom because I don't know what size I am.
I noticed a lot of you are coloring you hair- I am reading everything scary about chemicals of concern so can I pleaaase hear about any concerns you did/do have or what products you are using. My hair is uber-short always has been but the grey is overtaking the brown. I found some cool shampoo from austrailia that is a color in shampoo- cost the earth to ship it to the US but I don't know.
thanks -
Australia - sorry to our friends down-under can't type tonight
