I plan on having the test done when I finish school for the semester and have some free time over the break. I may receive disheartening news over the break if I do test positive. As for stress, although i am very stressed because of school and work, I do not believe stress has a direct cause to breast cancer or every person would develop it. Just varies on how the body develops naturally. It is unfortunate that the healthiest of people can get breast cancer!!

june, we try to correct incorrect information or assumptions on these threads because women will be coming along for years reading them. We don't want them to be misled or frightened by that information.

Hillary, I'm really hoping for the lucky 50% for you. Was your mom BRCA1 or BRCA2?

    melissa,

i can understand your POV. but i don't take any personal accusation. my information might not be correct but saying i imply women on this board did something wrong was very uncalled for. i do not accept that kind of rudeness.

juneping...you held up several anecdotes of cancer being caused by stress. Stated that you believe stress caused your cancer. That your sister had "read lots" and told you stress causes cancer. So how exactly is it "rude" for me to say that it is unfair to women to imply stress causes cancer when that is exactly what you are saying? You may not have meant that, but do you not see how others can read it that way and blame themselves unfairly? Or add undue anxiety that their own stressful lives might "cause" cancer? I ALSO hate to see you think your own stress caused your own cancer. That is an unreasonable burden to carry.

Hillary: waiting until you are ready for the testing/news is a great idea. Either way, you will be fine. FORCE is a great site too for support leading up to and during the testing process.

    divecat,

don't bring my sister into this. i didn't say my sister read about cancer.

you can hate all you want. i think it's the stressful period had something to do with my BC.

i am no cancer expert, whatever i said just my opinion. with your posts pointing out all my faults, ppl will not get the wrong information. you are welcome to follow my posts and point out all my faults. i can speak with my personal experience my thoughts you have no right to tell me what i think is wrong or right.

when scientists are still researching about what cause cancer, how do you know stress is not it? none of us know the absolute.

I didn't say you did anything wrong. I said what you believe and stated as fact is incorrect. I am not trying to pick on you or be mean to you.

Sorry, I meant your friend, not your sister.

I am not trying to point out faults, only trying to ensure that people do not blame themselves for cancer...or the OP whose mother has a genetic mutation that does have well researched clinical guidelines and risk assessments does not have her post sidetracked into being told stress causes cancer. She may have a high risk mutation and her circumstances are not like yours, period. She does have family history and may have a known risk factor she wants to be tested for.

Like I said, you are free to believe stress caused your cancer, but holding it up as fact or saying stress causes cancer is incorrect. Research is always ongoing, though there is plenty to say stress, or optimism, or pessism, have nothing to do with the genetic changes required to cause the rapid cell division that is cancer, nor is it fair to throw out stress as a cause in a post about well-researched hereditary mutations.

Hillary, I'm sorry that your mom tested positive. She has some big decisions to make and I'm glad she has your support. You too have a big decision to make with regards to getting tested yourself. You will determine when and if it's the right time for you. Thank you again for coming back to post about your experience. Many young women come to these boards with similar concerns and it will help them to read your posts. I hope that if you do decide to get tested, you will get good news and come back to share that with us. And that if you do eventually test positive, you can come back and get support from the many young women here who've been through it too.

    Hi Hillary,

I know what you mean... my Mom tested positive for BRCA-1 first, and it was a few months before I could get my own test done. Waiting for the results can be very stressful. Best of luck to you - I hope you test negative!

Hey Hillary, I know it's been a few months since you last posted and I hope that it's because you tested negative and no longer needed the comfort of the community, BUT if you end up testing positive as well I just wanted to let you know that I was/am in a similar situation (24yo, brca2+, 87%risk) and would always be open to discussing what comes next with you (in terms of both medical options and thinking about The Future).

    I wish you the best!
