Talk about short notice!!
i found out yesterday that my first dose of chemo (FEC) is tomorrow...gak!! I go for a chemo class this afternoon where I learn all I need to know (apparently). Wow...this is happening quickly. I just got the thumbs up for being healed after my surgery on Friday. All my meds to prevent side effects are at my pharmacy now & I have a nurse coming to check on me Saturday and give me a Neulastin (?) injection.
So,.. Do I join the November or December 2013 chemo thread??
Thanks.
BTW, went scarf & hat shopping yesterday...had a blast!! Is it weird to almost be looking forward to hairloss so I can wear all my new fashions? Got some pretty cute & funky stuff! LOL.

Wow that was fast. It took me 6 weeks to get started! I am doing Taxol now but will start FEC on December 26. Let me know how you do with the FEC. Not too many people here do that chemo so I can't get much info on how it is. -
hi Warrior50... Sounds like we are doing the opposite. I do FEC every 3 weeks first for 3 cycles, then Taxol weekly for 4 cycles. I will be sure to post updates.
The chemo class today was just basic about chemo in general, not specific to FEC. Apparently I will learn more about that from my nurse tomorrow. -
You can join both if you like. An advantage of joining the November group would be that since many of the women will have already gotten started with treatment, it will help you get a good idea of what to expect.
Enjoy the scarves and hats! -
Hi Lorrey and Warrior
I did FEC three years ago. I found it very doable. You need to make sure you drink lots of water, the "E" part of the FEC needs to be flushed out of your bladder fairly quickly - don't be surprised that your pee will be pink lol.
You also need to make sure you take all the meds they give you - even if you don't think you need them. It's much easier to stop nausea from starting than it is to stop it once you are already vomiting. I took all my meds when I was supposed to and never threw up once, felt a bit queasy from time to time, but never threw up.
You may also have some taste changes. Mine weren't too bad with FEC, but you need to find something that tastes ok for you - everyone is different. Don't try to force eating or drinking your favourite foods or drinks, or you may find you will never be able to have them again.
Some people get constipated, and others have the opposite problem - wait until you see which one you have and treat accordingly.
Any problems that you have make sure your onc knows about them, they will give you more meds to help counter the se's.
FEC is fairly common here in Australia - but not so much in the US, so a lot of Aussie girls have done FEC, I think it's common in Canada too.
Feel free to ask any questions.
Warm ((((hugs)))) to both of you.
Trish

Made it through my first dose!!. Wasn't too bad. They injected 3 syringes of E first. Then gave me a cherry popsicle for the F. Bonus!! Then I had the C slowly infused. I was okay for the E & F, but got suddenly tired about 1/2 way through the C. No vomiting or nausea while atthe hospital. Was mildly nauseated just before bed. I took my stemetil meds & helped. But woke up in middle of night with moderate nausea. Took my stemetil, but had to sleep in my recliner chair, as lying down made it worse. By noon the next day I felt much better and was eating soup & rice (bland & digestible). Doing okay now, just a bit tired.
I have just been napping on & off today. I had a Neulasta injection today 24 hrs after my chemo dose. My cheeks are flushed & warm, but my nose is cold...weird, but not worrisome.
Just plan on taking it as it comes. But if my next doses go like this...no worries!! -
Lorreymom, they should be giving you Emend on FEC too, it's an amazing antinausea med (expensive) but amazing.
Glad you are doing ok after your first tx. You will be tired, and unfortunately you'll get tireder with each tx - it's cumulative. Just rest when you need to - listen to your body, sleep as much as you can.
((((hugs)))

yes, I was prescribed Emend & another anti nausea med that I took 1 hour before. The Emend continued to days 2 & 3. I have been finding that it wears off after about 8 hours or so. I have been taking my stemetil when I feel a bit sick. Last night I took a stemetil before bed regardless & it helped. I slept through the night. No pain with the Neulasta so far. I have left over Tramaset from my surgery if I need it. I will ask about the claritin.
Thanks for all the great tips!!!. I feel like you gals are looking out for me & I truly appreciate that!!

Lorreymom and Warrior50 - I had FEC-D and wraped that up a little less than a month ago. I had three treatments of FEC and three treatments of Taxotere (the D part), all every three weeks. I had similar side effects to kayb and Trish. What I found is that all I wanted to do was sleep for about a week after my FEC treatments and that I had a bit of nausea. Emend is great, it's not covered under OHIP but it was covered by my insurance from work. Might be worth while to ask if it is a possibility for you, I was given it as part of a clinical trail. The further away I got from treatment, the more normal I felt, still a bit of fatigue but no where near as bad as right after a treatment. I also experienced heartburn and got a prescription from my oncologist for that, it got pretty bad but very well controlled but meds.
I used losing my hair as a reason to buy hats, I also used it as a reason to dye it lavender before it fell out. It was something I always wanted to do but could not because of work and the fact that I never had the guts to do something so drastic with my hair. I also picked up a couple of retro flower swim caps for when I go to the pool with my daughter, the kids get a kick out of it. I found it took about two weeks after my first treatment before it fell out and about a week for it to all fall out. Rock the bald look if you can, there is something really liberating about it. if you are not comfortable with that, wigs now a days can be pretty realistic. Most people can't believe how real mine looks when I wear it.
All the best. -
ooops, just saw you are also on Emend, just forget that part of my post -
Thanks for the encouragement about hair loss!
My Neulasta is giving me a sinus...right around my eyes...ache. At least I think it is the Neulasta?? On so many meds right now. I took my tramaset, so hope that keeps it at only a simmer. Going to put ice packs on my eyes and sleep in a minute.
Thanks again!! -
Lorreymom
I also had ondansetron and dexamethasone for antinausea. Between them and the emend I managed to keep the nausea at bay. One of them, and I can't remember which one now, but I think it was the dex was one I took whenever I felt queasy.
Heartburn was a bit of a problem too - I took something the onc prescribed for it and it helped a lot. Made sure you tell your onc about having heartburn and you'll get something for it.
I can't help you with the neulasta - it isn't something regularly given in Australia - so I never had it.
Hope you got some comfort in sleep.
Trish

I have read on here that claritan aids in the neulesta shots. Aches and pains but will probably help with sinuses too. -
yes, I forgot about claritan...I will ask my onc about that. My headache is gone...even went for a walk in the cool crisp air this afternoon. Felt wonderful!
Thanks!
