I totally get that for some women, a mastectomy is overkill....AS TREATMENT.

What they continue to fail to mention is that not everyone can stomach the constant monitoring and testing and scanning that goes with a "once a cancer patient" status. And the scans are cumulative and the dyes are not without risk...and...and...

I do not believe there is a woman amongst us who opted for bilateral mastectomy on a whim.

I regret that I did not have a BMX this time last year. Look at my stats, I got another tumor one year later in the other breast. Now I have to monitor a ER+PR+Her2- tumor with Arimidex, and a TN tumor with chemo. There are too many unknown mutations we do not know about and even tumor markers that have yet to be discovered. Yet, we are still using the same chemo drugs for breast cancer that have been around since the 80's. I will be another interesting statistic for my family and doctors to look back on.

well said above. Mastectomy is a bad option in absolute terms, but still a better option than risking metastasis and having NO REAL options as a MBC patient.

So go find the damn cure already and stop wasting money on researching mastectomy.

having a mastectomy as opposed to a lumpectomy doesn't keep you from metastasizing.

No, you are right. If it did everyone would have mastectomies--
