What do bone mets feel like?

Options

Let me start by saying that I'm not worried, but rather curious. I've had a "tender" spot on my hip for about two months now. It's on the "iliac crest" (I had to look that up!), the very top of the hip bone. It's literally a "spot" - very tender, about the size of a half dollar. There is a distinct, sharp pain when I press on the area; otherwise, it kinda aches and hurts in general. I thought perhaps it was a "pressure point" and have tried to massage it, ice it, heat it, Ibuprofen it - it hasn't changed. I've continued yoga and running, hoping it would stretch out and go away - but no such luck. This doesn't feel muscular, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Yes, I have an appointment with my MO; I just hate to go in there and say, "Hi, I'm having pain" when it's likely nothing. I don't want to over-react to every little ache and pain I feel. I'm two years from dx, 18 months post chemo and rads, and not taking Tamoxifen or AIs. Thoughts?

    Nancyhb,

There is no one answer to your question. I had a met to my femur and had absolutely no pain or symptoms. Even if others post what their pain felt like, it may mean nothing with respect to your pain. I know it's hard not to let the darker thoughts intrude, but I'm glad you've got an appt. with your mo. The odds are on your side that it will be nothing.

    Caryn,

Thanks for your response, and you're right - it's likely nothing, and I believe that. I've been on these boards long enough to know so many others never have symptoms, so "aches and pains" don't really *mean* anything to me. If it weren't for BC and I had this pain otherwise, I probably wouldn't give it a second thought. :-) And I don't want to appear overly-concerned or panicky with my MO, and if this turns out to be something else I'm going to feel so silly! I've got three weeks before the appointment, so hopefully this will resolve itself.

Nancy, I have two small mets on each side on the iliac crest. I had sciatic pain on one side and blamed it on my sofa. This was before my diagnosis and treatment. They were found with a PET scan. The spots are small and I find that the pain comes and goes. Who knows why. I hope your pain resolves itself but please, don't feel silly getting it checked out. You know your body best. Thinking of you, Diane

Diane - get out of my head!! Seriously - I've been blaming this on my sofa, though it's the same sofa we've had for a year and I don't know why the sofa would cause this *one weird spot* to hurt. So okay - I'll mention it when I go in. Like I said, I'm not worried, just curious - pretty sure it's nothing, so it'll be great to hear her say, "Everything's okie-dokie!"

    And thanks for your kindness.

It's always better to be safe than sorry. Have it checked out, the peace of mind alone makes it worth it.

Can you move your leg in a normal way? I fractured my femoral neck during a half marathon. I didn't fall, but suddenly could not move my leg normally. The pain was in the groin area though and wasn't diagnosed for 11 days because I thought it was a groin pull. I had a hip pinning procedure and everything healed well.

You could have something like that ---just a thought---

Thank you both for the suggestions! Dogs - yikes!! Sounds incredibly painful! What an awful time to break your leg! I can move my leg normally - in fact, the pain seems much less intense when I run (hurts most when I sit still, and when I'm in bed). I wish it was joint-related - then I could imagine it was arthritis, or a left-over joint pain from Tamoxifen or chemo. It's just odd that the bone itself hurts, particularly when I touch it (I know - stop touching it!!) :-) *hugs* to you all, and thanks for the support.

    Hi Nancy,

I'm a BC sister "up the road" from you. I've had the same thing that you've had - pain on the iliac crest for about six weeks - hurts more to sit or lie down and hurts more to touch it. Also, pain on the right side of the sternum (breast bone) where I had the mastectomy. I'm concerned and hoping it's related to my auto immune disease! Bone Scan tomorrow. I'm thinking of you and glad you'll be getting into see your MO soon. Thank you everyone for your posts.

Suzette - I'll be thinking good, happy and un-eventful thoughts for you during your bone scan tomorrow. Please let us know how things turn out. Good luck!
