Blood Pressure Spike at end of treatment

Options

I'm not sure of the best place to post this... looking for ideas, if anyone else has experienced hypertension as a side effect of chemo? The history is that I had dose dense AC/T from December 2010 through April 2011. Around the end of radiation, in June sometime, my blood pressure went from a reliable 120/70 to 150/110, literally overnight. My oncologist does not think that this is related to treatment, said that heart problems would take a few years to develop.

It's 2 1/2 years later, and I went off my blood pressure meds this past summer, just to see.... and my blood pressure returned to 120/70.... but only sometimes... then it went back to a consistent 150/110 and I'm back on meds. Which don't seem to be working, as my blood pressure is staying very elevated.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I always run high when at the clinic. Somewhat better numbers when using our BP machine at home. Sounds like you do a little self-monitoring also which is good (unless it makes you more nervous about elevated readings!)

My internist is following me for this: we may need to start treating but I'm hoping to lose a few more pounds and see if that helps. In addition, I ramped up my exercise regimen this year so hopefully my cardiac status is improving even though I'm getting older...

Sometimes people do need to have their meds tweaked. Does your oncologist write those prescriptions?

Thanks for responding. I am also being followed by my internist. I was thinner when the blood pressure first spiked than I am now. I absolutely need to get more focused on healthy lifestyle, but the BP spike happened when I was within 10 - 15 pounds of my ideal weight. It'st just puzzling that it went up so quickly, one day it was low, the next day it was high and it stayed there! I am taking it at home, and it is always elevated. I'm going back to my internist on Wednesday, so I think we will be tweaking the meds even further.
