System requirements rollcall

I thought some feedback on system requirements might be useful, and since it's not possible to reply on the announcement itself, I'm reporting back here. My computer is several years old, but I am able to access bco using a much lower browser version than the announcement says I need.

I have Mac OS 10.5.8, and can log in, read the forums, and submit comments using Firefox 11, which is the newest version that will run on my computer, unless I upgrade the system software.

My (PPC)G4 is 10.5.8 and thats the end of the line for me. I can't even update the OS if I wanted to. OK so my Macs 10yrs old, but runs just fine and I think its sad that our poots are in forced obsolescence. I'd like to think I'd be able to use my Mac here if I needed to. In the main, Im on XP for net stuff. Mods what is your requirements on Linux if any?

curveball, as you know from your own experience, older hardware/software can work just fine for much of what members want to do on the site. However, it won't necessarily work for everything, which is why the minimum system requirements reflect the configurations that have been tested and are supported.

Musical, we don't know that you wouldn't be able to use your older Mac on BCO, but it's not supported technically. We don't have Linux requirements; the tech team focused on operating systems and browser versions that are used by the majority of site visitors.

Of course, for Macintosh users, you can't go above 10.6.8 and still access the chat rooms. The minimum requirements don't apply to this java-based application.

Sadly, you're absolutely right about that, Susan.

Do not know if anyone else is having issues with their Kindle Fire after the latest changes at BCO. Since then I can not respond to a PM while on the Kindle Fire but can read them ....when I click on reply the keyboard does not appear. Everything else on Kindle is just fine at other sites so am thinking it is something here that is the issue.
