PeacockGirl that's how my hot flashes started - they got much more intense as time went on. I literally feel like I'll explode - not just from heat but from pressure inside my face. The blessing here is that it's winter so I can just step outside or open my car window when they hit :-) -
So today is graduation day. For my efforts I get rain changing to a whole lot of snow with 50klm hr windsThank goodness for Ativan. Can't wait for winter driving everyday for 3 weeks of rads. UGH!
Talked to NP about stomach/side pain. She wasn't too worried about it. Keep eye on it, if constant or really intense call in. If fever call in.
Have to attend an endocrinology class in Dec. I had asked her what the 2nd drug is that I will be on & she said that will be discussed in class. All I know is that I get Tamoxifen for 2 1/2 yrs then switch. I hate not knowing, can't do research.
Good luck to all today, big hugs to all who need it. I will be wearing big pockets today. -
Peacock girl-
Sounds HORRID, I am so sorry! Good you are sleeping, your body must need it...that's what medicines are for, take the pain ones, or whatever works!!! This is one time in your life you don't have to suffer, they have great strong meds to help...
I have decided to listen to my body for first time in my life and lay around when I'm tired or try to nap(not good at that either and not sleeping either very well) but sleep and rest!!!
Wishing you feel better!
Love the cap! -
70 - if you are switching after Tamoxifen then it will be an aromatase inhibitor. Arimidex, Femara or Aromasin. Arimidex and Femara are more similar, Aromasin has a steroid component. The side effects from these three drugs (that disable the conversion of androgens to estrogen by interfering with the enzyme aromatase) are pretty consistently the same. Many women have to switch around all three drugs, and in some cases the manufacturers, to find the best fit. I have been on Femara twice using two different drug makers, and Arimidex. There are numerous threads here on BCO devoted to each drug and their respective side effects. Here is BCO's take on AI drugs in general:

I use Cetaphil cleanser and Cerave lotion/ cream...My dermatologist recommends them and coincidentally when I lived in California that woman recommended the same...skin gets more dry with chemo. so the Cerave cream is heavier and thicker for this or winter time both...I swear by them..I also use Tazorac retin a nightly for years and oncologist said ok to still use it....#1 yesterday, 3 more to go...:) -
JellyK - thanks for the laugh!!
Hot flashes have picked up for me, too. Last night I woke up so hot and sweaty, and this morning on the way back from bringing the kids to school I had to put my window down. Thank God it was only 37 degrees out so I cooled off pretty quickly. I've always been cold natured (and still am in between hot flashes!) So this being hot is so bizarre.
Anyone have nosebleeds on Taxol? I haven't had a bloody nose since I was a kid... Until last night. It was bad and took FOREVER to stop!
I've been staying pretty positive throughout chemo and just trying to go about my life as usual, but I'm really starting to feel it now (mentally). I'm like peacock- waving the white flag. I only have three weeks of chemo left and after thirteen weeks of it, that should feel like nothing, but it just seems like it will never end and every freaking day brings on another new stupid side effect it seems. I'm just done. -
audra 67 thks for the info will try.
Lighthouse, i had my first nosebleed after my second round if chemo. As for hot flashes, well they startedup again last week. I am post menopausal and thought i was pretty much done with these outburst beforei started treatments. Theyare usually brought on by caffiene and chocolate which i use to love. Notice i said used to, since chemo everything i taste issweet or salty and in the third week after treatmenti start to gain more taste and yes i usually bake a decadent choco cake. Lol hang in there ladies lets tackle these weird symtoms we get and yes listen to our bodies when they are too tired to even sweep the floor. Xoxo -
I too had spontaneous nosebleeds after round 2. Did not have after round 3. But then I had mentioned it to my NP. I have never been told if they change my doses, so maybe they did. I used saline nasal spray. It seemed to help a lot for me anyway. -
Peacock-I also deal with hives and always took Zyrtec too. Took it my first round of chemo and the bone pain was horrible. Changed to Claritin for last three rounds (also added Aleve) and I had no problem after that. I am using up my bottle of Claritin and planning on changing back to Zyrtec. I forgot that it makes you sleepy... maybe that is why I haven't been sleeping so nice since chemo started...that and the steroid of course. Now that I am done with chemo I thought my sleep would come back but maybe that is why I am not sleeping so deeply. -
Oddly, I'll take the pseudo hot flashes for now over a potentially horrid period from hell again. With my hemoglobin low and RBCs in the trash can I just can't survive another one. I'm kinda wondering if that last one I suffered between chemo #3 and almost entirely thru #4 was the final "death throes" of my poor lady parts. I'm only 44. I really didn't want to slam into menopause like a brick frickin' wall. Oh the woes of chemo.
I haven't had a nosebleed yet (knock on wood) but have wondered when one would show up since I read that is always a common SE. I put some Vaseline in my nose often when it gets dry.
2 Xanax and a zyrtec did NOTHING to help me sleep last night. I asked for a sleeping aid (ambien, lunesta? something! never taken either before) and my onco told me just to take 2 Xanax for bedtime. Will demand something different this next appointment. Have oxycodone for pain and it does make me sleepy or I can use Phenergan for sleep too but too much of the dreaded constipation comes with those. I hate this completely insane merry go round/roller coaster combo. If I could just exercise at the level my old healthy self was used to I could sleep like a rock. Nope. No way. Taking a shower gets me winded these days.
screw it. I'm going to go ride a horse today. -
Just finished taxol 10! Yes I get nosebleeds. Vaseline and sleeping with humidifier help. Made the trip to see genetic counselor yesterday, who is facing insurance so myriad can proceed. I'm getting hot flashes too. Got a script for Effexor today for those. I take restoril for sleeping. 30mg. 15 mg only worked for 4-5 hours. I didn't recover at all this week. Still achey and tired. Busy week with funeral and road trip, plus the nurse thought my flu shot on the 6th may have contributed. Will see how this week goes. -
jellyK, I'm glad you're back, you make me smile. My buzzed hair is still growing. I feel like a chia pet -
My buzzed hair is still growing. I feel like a chia pet
LOL That made me laugh. :-) My hair isn't growing... I wish it would, as I heard a lot of people say it does halfway through taxol. Oh well.
Peacockgirl - have you tried tylenol pm (or advil pm)? Most MOs will let you take either advil or tylenol (some prefer one over the other) during chemo and on nights when I just REALLY need to catch up on sleep I'll take one. Doesn't always help me sleep through the night, but I do sleep longer. I wouldn't be surprised if your last awful period was the "death throes" - at least temporarily. I had two period in three weeks when I first started chemo, and I thought the second one would NEVER end. That was the end of Sept and nothing since. I've heard for some, though, chemopause is only temporary and sometime after you finish your parts will start working again. I won't have to worry - I'll be slammed into menopause right after chemopause because I'm having a hysterectomy with my breast surgery. What fun!
knightzoo - Funny genetics story. My mom went to get tested since I'm BRCA 2+, and she took the letter she gave me indicated which gene mutation I was positive for. Well, Myriad contacted her genetics counselor and said they needed the actual test report from mine because the gene mutation number meant nothing to them - it was a different format than what they use. Ok - Myriad is the lab who did MY test!! LOL So how can they not speak their own language in terms of test results?!?!? Did you already have blood drawn for the test or do you need insurance approval first? -
Hi Lovely ladies
Has anyone had any allergic reactions to TC? I had my 3rd treatment, which I found tough and today have broken out in welts and itchiness. I feel like this is a allergic reaction to the medication but wanted to hear your thoughts. I HATE chemo and do not want to go back to do my last one after this problem.K
-
LHL: myriad has had my blood since Oct 9! Insurance hoops are making me crabby. I have a great aunt being tested too - she has BC and both her daughters have too. Will be interested to see both results. -
I've been having some sharp pains on my left "breast" any one with surgery going thru this. I have called my breast surgeon and my PS no one is calling back.
Nose bleeds- only when I blow my nose, but I am on taxotere.
I feel so tired and my knees hurt.
-
My PS just called back they want to see me,make sure it's not an inflamed nerve.
-
Alfranco,
My knees hurt too! I can't decide if it is from all the laying around or the neulasta. But it is a pain!
-
Anyone a stage 4 or have nodes on both sides? V -
Nosebleeds - a combination of inflamed and dried out tissue in the nose and low platelets caused by chemo. Platelets are the clotting factor in your blood, so when they are low - combined with damaged and dry tissue from chemo, creates a perfect storm for nosebleeds.
AdvilPM and TylenolPM are pain meds with Benadryl - if you don't want to take the Advil or Tylenol - just take some Benadryl. Acetaminophen is hard on the liver which is already being challenged by filtering chemo drugs, and Advil is hard on the stomach.
Ekaterina - sounds like it could be a taxane allergy, have you told your MO?
On the Chia Pet deal - I actually looked like one - my hair grew out stick straight, no curl. Since it was growing uniformly it looked very Chia Pet-ish! Or, like someone who had been electrocuted! -
I have had a runny nose for 2 months since first &C. I blow it so much I get blood daily but not an actual nose bleed. It also goes the other route & dries up, can't win LOL Vaseline, good lotion tissues & Ocean spray are always near by. -
lighthouse-
try saline nasal spray and ayr ointment, just put some inside all around your nose with a qtip before bed and in am.... -
peacock girl-
Question, I asked if the chemo would stop my period and they don't know, have read it will...due for one next week and just had 1 st chemo yesterday...would it stop it that fast or did you say you still had them til after 3rd set????
I want mine gone I'm 46 and so tired of it all...LOVED the menopause thing and was hoping it would stop it permanently. Then I am going on Tamoxifen so that will stop it if this doesn't but that s 3 months from now...I want a perk. -
That is a reaction to taxotere, call your dR! Take some Benadryl too -
Ekaterina- I had something similar on both 3 and 4 of my TC. I took a picture of the hives for my doctor. Looking at the picture he said it was a side effect and not an allergic reaction. It sure seemed like an allergic reaction to me. Benadryl helped the 3rd time around. The 4th time it got worse and Benadryl wasn't helping. I finally ended up with a few breathing treatments in the ER and Doctors office before they told me to double my dose of Benadryl and that plus time helped it to go away. I don't think I was allergic to the T part but the C. (I am no good at remembering all the names of the drugs...let alone spell them) Always all 4 rounds I got this funny tickle in my sinus at the last 10 minutes of the "C" part of chemo. so I guess that is why I think it was that drug. -
hey audra, chemopause? sheesh doctors don't know. my onco told me I would likely go into "chemo pause" during treatment. when I complained about the 2nd period he said well it usually happens after treatment ends. Um. No. That is not what he said originally. Hence my "they don't know" comment. I had chemo #1 on Sept 13th. Regular period came Sept 25th. A second HIDEOUS one came Oct. 15th and lasted until after chemo #4 on October 25th. I discussed the whole deal it with the infusion nurses at chemo #5 (because nurses are typically women and usually awesome ...unlike my oncologist), one said that if they do continue to keep coming that my doctor may want to Rx birth control pills. Oh holy hell. Really? No thanks. I'll take a transfusion before that.
I pretty much have followed along right with Lighthouselady's experiences/side effects/issues on this magically fun ride so I expect no more periods as she is discovering now.
ps-thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the barn and with the horses. I haven't felt this good all week. Such good medicine! -
I need some good medicine, now I'm pissed. was wanting no more periods or something good to come from this...angry day..is that normal after chemo 1 or does that mean I'm pms-ing and getting my normal period soon....darn it all! -
mankatostat thank you I am relieved to hear that this went away eventually. But was wondering how long it took?
SpecialK I did tell my Onc but the usual take Benedryl and go to ER if you have breathing difficulties. My hand and foot have been swollen and I have really bad Bain in my upper back but inside my body? I am just really worried that these things will never go away. What happens if you only do 3 our if 4 treatments?
Really worried? K -
Ekaterina - hard to say on only doing 3 out of 4 treatments, but there are always people who can't finish for a variety of reasons. Since it does sound like an allergic reaction it will most likely go away, I also did have swelling during my chemo, from #3 - #6. I am surprised that your oncologist is not taking this more seriously though - can you go into see him/her? -
I know we talked about this before, but can't remember if there was a solution. My eyes are getting crusty during night time and wake up to shut eyes. I think this is also causing me to lose my eyelashes.
Also I have been having fainting spells, not constant but during the whole chemo treatment. I've had three. Not fun, hate the feeling, Dr said it could be my pressure, dehydrated, etc... in other words they don't know.
