Had a lumpectomy October 30, 2013.  Saw the radiation oncologist, & saw the cancer oncologist today. I am feeling very over whelmed.  Waiting for the oncotype to come back.  That will determine chemo or  no chemo?  It is stage 1 , tumor was 1.72 All the lymphnodes clean, everything came back negative. So why chemo? FEELING VERY OVERWHELMED NOW.

What grade, and how old are you and what are your hormone & herceptin receptors statuses? That all contributes to whether or not chemo is recommended also.

    msmaples,

I have been dealing with BC one way or another for the past 21 years. My mom was diagnosed 21 years ago, and I got diagnosed last year. When my mom diagnosed, she did not know (and neither did I) that you cannot look at a tumor as a hard, solid mass. A tumor is made up of cells which can leave the tumor site and go to other parts of the body. When these cells go to other places in the body and start developing there, the cancer becomes metastatic. For instance, a breast cancer cell which has left the tumor site and went to the bone is still breast cancer, not bone cancer. Once cancer becomes metastatic, it is treatable but no longer curable. When my mom was diagnosed as Stage Ia 21 years ago (I was 20 years old at the time and my mother 45), we did not fully understand this information. We relied on her doctors when they said, she did not need chemotherapy. 8 years later, she was Stage IV (and she has been for over 13 years). Even with all the imaging the doctors do, there may be microscopic cells which have escaped the tumor site via the blood or the lymph system (which do not appear on imaging) which chemotherapy kills. Basically, all other treatment - surgery, radiation - is local. Hormonal therapy is also systemic. With chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, you are trying to kill all those cells which may have escaped the tumor and spread in your body, which may, given the chance, develop in other parts of your body. I hope this helps in your decision-making.

I think it depends on many factors, including who is treating you. Not all docs are thinking the same way, or using the same data. I was stage 1 grade 1, my mo waited til i got my oncodx back (16). Plan then was to have me on tamoxifen and radiation. I did mammosite (internal rad) but did not take tamox due to family history of stroke and blood clots. It's a very personal choice, and all choices carry a consequence that one must live with. Good luck with your treatment, come back and share with us.

YoungTurkNYC-- Do the mammaprint test to see if you need chemotherapy. It takes into account 71 genes and if you are premenopausal it has a better statistic than the oncotype test. I got both test done, because I have strong family history (mother, grandmothers, aunts, 1st cousin that is just mom's side) of BC my mother was 33 when she got it and they gave her 3 months to live. My BRCA came back negative and I was upset with that considering how many women have it in my family. For the past 22 years I was waiting for the shoe to drop. You are in the unknown stage in planning. Keep a journal to write down your feelings and questions it helped. It is scary, but you will make it through this with support.

Thank you, I am 51 years old. My daughter is 21. I worry about her now. No one in my family has  breast cancer.  I am the first. I am just overwhelmed, shocked.  My Er came back positive, the progesterone came negative.  He said I am stage 1A grade 2 all margins were clear, clean, nothing in lymphnodes. Waiting for the HER2 test to come back and do the Octotype test.   He also said, non hormone treatment and no tomoxfin, something else. I have to wait and see for the test to come back. next apt is Dec 3rd day after my 52nd birthday!!

    Has anyone else had this

Msmaples, I don't know why your doc said no hormone treatment as that is standard for ER positive cancer.

Good luck with your oncotype test. Remember, you can get a second opinion on treatment options.

    Keep in touch.

He did talk to me about the hormone therapy.  I was just so over whelmed the last few days. The "HER2" test came back negative too. I will have radiation treatments 5 days a week for 15 minutes each 6 to 7 weeks. and the hormone therapy. I will see him on Dec. 3rd for the results of the octotype test. I think no chemo. I am grateful

I was just DX on Nov1,2013. I just gave birth to my daughter on July 31,2013. I was devastated. I'm still overwhelmed. I'm HER2+ ER-/PR-. Its stage 2b 2cm and node involvement. I've already had round 1 of chemo (taxotere, herceptin, and perjeta). I've got 5 left to go. I haven't gotten the results of my BRCA test yet.  After chemo I plan double mastectomy and node removal. This is so scarey.

redhummer1- you are right it's scary. What freaked me out the most was the waiting and the unknowns of when treatments would start. You just breathe and tackle each obstacle the best way. This is a great site to look up questions and answers. Your are now a warrior! Congratulations on having a daughter, because she will give you strength. Just remember it is okay to be scared and have a dark time but there is light out there keep reaching for it. Keep a journal. If you are married I recommend the book for your hubby: breast cancer husband how to help your wife. If you don't have a hubby, I would get the book get me through this!

This is a great site to come to. Lots of advice, questions, it has it all!! I did start keeping a "journal" & it helps alot. You may not have time with your little girl. She WILL give you strength. It helps me when I talk about it to everyone, even strangers when I am out and about. Some how I tell someone.  IF I didn't go have my routine mamo 9 months late.... I would NOT have known.  I am so sure I will be fine. What ever I have to do, I WILL.  My daughter is 22 and my son is 19. I will go to the doctor on Tuesday to get the results of my Octontype dx results.  He said I dont qualify for the Braca test. I may ask again just to be sure. Keep positive thoughts .  WE are all here for you.
