Make up tips for eyebrows, eyelashes etc.

Options

Hello,

I am starting chemo tomorrow and was wondering what kind of makeup is best when you are going through treatment. Am I supposed to buy brand new makeup? What did you girls use for drawing on eyebrows? I have thick eyebrows to begin with and I have never used a eyebrow brush or filler/pencil. I use eyeliner and foundation and that's about it. I am now worried about how to draw and fill in eyebrows as I will look really different with no eyebrows as mine are quite thick to begin with. Any tips? I didn't even have a chemo class yet. The nurse told me to show up at 8am tomorrow and she called in nausea meds for me. Isn't that odd? I was at the store yesterday looking for oral biotin products and I couldn't find it. I am starting dose dense AC tomorrow and will do that every 2 weeks 4 times and then have weekly taxol for 12 weeks. I read that a lot of women took Glutamine for taxol. Does the nurse or MO recommend that? Where do I get that from. I am hoping they give me a lot more information tomorrow when I go in. Thanks for all your help.

I was very like you in that, while I wore eye makeup, I never used a brow pencil.  My hairdresser recommended a water-proof brow pencil and it turned out to be relatively easy to pencil in missing brows; just follow the brow (orbital?) bone and use short, feathery strokes.

It's not unusual for the nurse to call in nausea meds for you; you'll need to start taking them before you have your first infusion.  It's a pre-emptive strike, so to speak: take the nausea meds as directed, don't wait to get nauseated first because, then, they will have little effect.

Where are you having chemo?  The cancer centre that I went to had it's own pharmacy and carried a wide range of products that chemotherapy patients need during treatment, including Biotin products.  If not, then ask a local pharmacist; if he/she doesn't already stock them, perhaps they could while you are having treatment.

Thanks Selena - hope everything goes okay tomorrow. Just nervous. The nurse said I don't need to put numbing cream - they will use a spray on the port. I will ask if they have a pharmacy - they probably do. Thanks again.

Sorry you are on the road to chemo. I am many years out but saw your post. I wanted to let you know that I did not lose my eyebrows and lashes until my last (4th) chemo. (UGH!!) Anyhow, I bought Anastasia EyeBrow Kit. They come in a variety of shades and is sold at Sephora or Ulta. In the kit is this great (waterproof) powder, brushes and Stencils oh and a dvd showing you how to use the kit. I found if I put foundation on my brows would stay on all day even in hot humid weather and most people couldn't even tell they were not real. It took a few times to master the stencils but I found them to be a true life saver. I still use the powder to fill in my brows and love this product and highly recommend.

The anti-nausea meds they give you pre-chemo are also lifesavers. I took Emend (IV form) Benadryl (had mild allergy to taxotere) and I forget the other antinausea med but I never got sick.

    Good luck with your treatment!!!

Thanks Diane! I will check out the eyebrow kit from sephora and makeup tips. I figure if you look halfway decent you feel better about yourself and start to feel better. Take care. Thanks again!

Take in an American Cancer Society 'Look Good, Feel Better' session (your cancer center should be able to get you the information & help you set it up). They give you scarves & wig advice. Show you how to use makeup to your best advantage during treatment and they give you tons of high quality makeup free. It's a really good & helpful program

septmom - I did not lose all my brows but here is a link to some brow kits. I used Anastasia tinted brow gel. I also used heavier eyeliner and I don't really think anyone noticed that I did not have complete lashes - I retained about half a dozen upper lashes on each eye, but they were not evenly spaced, lost all the bottoms. I found that I needed more intense makeup - I usually wear a nude lip, but wore a darker shade, and darker eyeshadow.

Any grocery store or drugstore (like CVS, Walgreens or RiteAid) will have Biotin in the vitamin section. I didn't take it until I was done with chemo - this was my hairdresser's advice - she felt that it was a waste of time unless my hair was actually growing. You can get L-Glutamine (for neuropathy from taxane drugs - Taxol or Taxotere) from GNC in stores, or online, or in health food stores. You usually find it near the protein powders. Your MO will probably not recommend L-Glutamine (I took 30g of L-Glutamine, 1500 mg of Acetyl L-Carnitine and 100g of B-6 daily to ward off neuropathy) without you asking about it, and some will not permit it, but mine thought it was fine.

Septmom- I second the Look Good, Feel Better session, I learned all kinds of things and you get free products as well so you can try differnt items w/out the committment. I was told start with new makeup and as the others said, more intense, as well as all new nail polish and nail files since my MO said no mani / pedis so I have to do them myself. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I personally found the best product for my brows is from It Cosmetics, their eyebrow pencil. I started practicing with it while I had eye brows because I also have very thick brows and found it was easy to keep them full by feathering in the light spots and never fully lost them 100%.

Always check with your MO before changing anything you are taking by way of vitamins and supplements. I took products from GNC with Biotin after my first chemo finished but the MO would not let me take it while on chemo.

The place where I go uses the spray on my port vs. the cream - it rocks...though I have never had the cream. I just like it is quick and we get started.

    Best of luck tomorrow!

Here's a great tutorial on how to create fake eyebrows (she also shows how to do eyelashes in another post): http://eyelineher.blogspot.com/2011/05/recreating-eyebrows-with-make-up.html

The blogger has alopecia, so she's pretty much an expert at doing this every day!

    SeptMom, hi.

When I had chemo, I didn't lose all my brows and had enough to fill in with pencil. My all time favorite product was the Universal Brow Pencil and the Brow Buddy from www.billiondollarbrows.com The Universal pencil is really universal...works for everyone and the Brow Buddy is a tool that helps you define the start, end and arch for your brows. Easy peasy and lovely products.

    Good luck, hon.

hi , before cancer I already drew on my eyebrows and used eyelashes. My eyebrows have always been really thin so I been drawing( or penciling )them on since high school. I like makeup but don't spend a lot of money or time on it. I do a simple retractable brown eyeliner pencil that I get from beauty supply stores for $1 regular pencils u sharpen will work too. I think my eyebrows look good because I had a guide already , I follow the pattern of my eyebrows the little I do have. I personally think that if u thicken inside corner n gradually get thinner this looks the best and natural and remember it's an arch or the line of an oval.

I also used eyelashes before , they come in different colors and varying thickness. I myself put on the strips of lashes, it's jus one piece. Trim for your eye , sum will come with lash glue or you can buy it. Honestly hair glue( glue that you apply extensions with )works better. I did a q tip into the glue n wipe across the band and apply. It's not hard but u have to find your technique. To me the easiest to apply are the lashes with the thinnest band ( and more natural looking than the really thick), this allow you to get as close to your start of your lash line. And a little more difficult is individual lashes , if u have the patience those are fine and last longer. If not you could go to a salon and nail shops should offer the service as well.

For as makeup I would wear what u have and see if ur skin color changes. You could still use the same foundation or later buy darker/ lighter as needed. I believe a bb cream would be good. I used maybellines and did a friends makeup using it n she was darker skin while I'm lighter and it looked great. I guess it adjusts to skin tones. And I forgot to add if u apply your own strip lashes and you are slightly on your eyelid rather than your lash line apply eye liner or shadow will cover that up if u weren't able to apply the lashes closer to your natural lash line. Hope that helps I also purchase my lashes for $2-3 at the beauty supply store. You could also purchase from a Sally's or walgreens for a little higher.

And as another lady commented the program by the cancer society is good. I never attended because I couldn't coordinate the classes wit my chemo times and I knew I would have been ok with what I know. But my mother attended and while I'm fine with maybelline and other low price brands, I'm aware of the high end department store brands cause I worked in one. I was envious of the better expensive brands my mother received. They gave her the good stuff including OPI nail polish.

It's the 'Look Good, Feel Better' program through the American Cancer Society. It is one session & about an hour long (I can't honestly remember for sure, it may have been a little longer, ask if you are on a schedule). It is well worth the time, and you will both look and feel better after going to it!

When I did chemo in 2007 I could never draw my brows, I always ended up rubbing it off because it looked so bad then I had red splotchy marks in addition to no brows.

This time I am using a brow powder from Clinique that works well and is easier for me to draw brows, then wipe off in the areas that look uneven. My only complaint is that it won't last all day so I carry it in my purse for touchups. I felt like my brows were sparse before chemo so I think I'm going to to keep this as part of my makeup routine.

I also got Cliniques touch base for eyes that makes eyeshadow more intense and lasts all day.

I also recently started using eyeliner and I have not perfected that. I bought false lashes from headcovers.com that were short enough not to look fake but I cannot apply them correctly.

My challenge with lashes and eyeliner is that i can only see out of the top of my right eye due to optic nerve damage so it's hard to do details like that where i need to close my good eye and try to see out of my bad eye.

Hey! I am actually a Master Cosmetologist and a Makeup artist. ( and a nursing student ) There is a website that is called Nu-brow. It is actual human hair on a strip shaped like a brow.... and they have different shapes of eyebrows too. You use adhesive (same as fake eyelashes) to apply them. They are reusable too. I had several clients that I used them on during their chemo therapy. They looked real and undetectable. and the adhesive usually doesnt irritate the skin, but it does contain latex. So if you have a latex allergy, another adhesive may be available. Good luck to you!
