Waiting for Surgery

A close family friend was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She is 70 years old, and they don't know many of the specifics yet, but they have said it's aggressive. When they did the biopsy, they found at least one positive lymph node. The CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis were clear as was the MRI of the breast. Her surgeon is highly respected and the top choice for many people with whom we have spoken. When our friend asked her when she will do the double mastectomy, the surgeon said "soon", but the office called yesterday and said the surgery will be the 19th...of December!

Is it normal to wait this long? She is not having any type of chemo or radiation prior to surgery.

Thanks for your help,

Julie

I forgot to mention she has triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma.

Six weeks is not unheard of, based on what I've read here from other women. Breast cancer that is so aggressive that it requires almost immediate surgery is unusual. If your friend is worried, she might want to ask to be contacted if they have someone cancel, and she would want to make sure she has all of her pre-op stuff done so she can take the appointment. But really, six weeks is not terrible, especially if you are using a popular surgeon (which is a good thing). The waiting is emotionally hard, but it will also give her time to prepare. A double mastectomy is no picnic to recover from, especially for a 70 year old.
