Hello ladies --
My mom was recently dx with Stage 11A bc. ER and PR +, HER -, lymph nodes negative, mastectomy, Grade 3, 2.6 cm.
My question is regarding the use of chemo on women her age (72). I've researched the topic quite a bit and there seems to be no definite guidelines for her age group. Anyone out there have additional information? We are seeing an oncologist for the first time next week and I'd like to be knowledgable.
Any input is appreciated.

I don't think there is much research. I know several women of that age who have done chemo, some sailed through and others had a rockier time (like younger women). Any other health problems or meds she is on may be something to ask about. Ask about her chance of recurrance, and risks/benefits of any recommended treatments. Some oncs used to not offer chemo based on age, but now do unless their patient has health issues that would make chemo more risky.
Take care,

My mom is age 68 and was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer last summer. She has done taxol + avastin, doxil, and is about to go on xeloda in a clinical trial. She's dropped a little weight but otherwise done really well. Biggest troubles are mouth sores and some neuropathy. She still does her normal routines, travels, takes care of my Dad, and is pretty upbeat. She's got a great wig and if you didn't know she had IBC, you'd never guess there was anything wrong with her. Even during her treatments, her blood counts are fine. She did get a bout of Shingles last fall - no residual pain.
My prayers that your Mom will do well and the treatments will work for her. Don't be afraid to ask questions!!!!

I think it depends on your mom's health and attitude. 72 is really quite young in my eyes. My mom went through a double mast at 75 with flying colors.
