Atypical Duct Hyperplasia

I am 34 years old with no major risk factors or family history. Last month an MRI biopsy showed flat epithelial atypia, so I was recommended for surgical removal. I had the surgery last week and now this biopsy shows atypical duct hyperplasia, not the flat epithelial atypia. Just curious to see what others have done after this diagnosis as far as next steps. What kind of monitoring, any meds, etc. Also, has anyone ever gotten a 2nd opinion on their pathology?

Hi Nicole. Sorry you find yourself here. There is also an "ADH club" thread here, and a "Six Month Watchful Waiting Club Unite" thread. Others with ADH will probably find you here shortly.

I had to have a lumpectomy to have ADH cells removed and am now on tamoxifen for 5 yrs.  I will also have to start having an MRI to go along with my mammograms. I need to find the ADH club as well.

Hi Nicole, it is a good idea to get a second opinion on the pathology slides with ADH. I did get a second opinion when I had a diagnosis of atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH). I believe that most individuals are monitored with MRI alternating with mammo (every six months). Some individuals take Tamoxifen, as well. Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much everyone! I met with the oncologist yesterday and it looks like I will do the alternating mri and mammo schedule. No tamoxifen for now. And she has requested my slides for her pathology dept to look at, so I am happy to have a 2nd opinion on that to make sure nothing ense is going on.

Good to get that second opinion on the path. It will reassure you. Also, at your age, close monitoring will be important. All the best to you, Nicole!
