MRI and irregular periods...

Hello all,


I'm new to the club but already finding so much comfort and information I thank you all.


I was diagnosed on Halloween with DCIS. I had a small area of clustered microcalcifications that showed up on a mammogram then a stereotactic biopsy that confirmed the DCIS. My surgeon has ordered a MRI to further examine the area and lymph nodes so I can better go over my options for treatment.


Here is my question..


I am 50 and on low dose birth control pills in order to help with the night sweats. I have never ever had regular periods or only a few a year if at all. Needless to say with menopause approaching I never know when I will have them. I mentioned this to the scheduling nurse at the MRI center when she asked me about the date of my last period. I told her I couldn't remember the date of my last cycle and it could be months or more till I have another one. She said come on in to the appointment. I am wondering if I should mention this to the radiologist as well or maybe call my surgeon ? I don't mean to be so wiggy but any thoughts or advice are appreciated in advance !

    I'm 55 but still having periods (I seem to be going for a world record.) I just had to wait over a month before my own MRI because they wanted to do it around ten days after my period. They told me that the hormonal changes in some women's breasts can cause changes that can make MRIs more challenging for radiologists to read. I think there's a chance they are even more concerned about this if your breasts are extremely dense (mine are.)


    I've found some reports that say it's controversial about how big a difference this timing really makes. If the scheduling nurse wasn't concerned, I am guessing you would not need to call your surgeon; my (newbie also!) understanding is they try to choose an optimum time frame if they can, but if your cycles are irregular, it's probably not something they really worry about.


    I'm really sorry you are dealing with the DCIS diagnosis, but this forum is a wonderful place to get information and support. Sending hugs and positive thoughts your way.
