I saw a team at an NIC breast center last week, and got reports from their evaluations of my biopsies and other tests. I'm trying to understand all of this information, and was hoping someone could help?

Background: Biopsy 1, MRI, Biopsy 2

Biopsy 1: IDC, Nottingham grade 1, IDC measures 3 mm in greatest linear extent in the specimen(slide A reviewed), No DCIS identified, No microcal id'd, ER+moderate staining, PR+strong staining, HER2 Fish not amplified.

MRI Report: Left Breast IDC & DCIS, cluster of irregular, enhancing masses is seen in UIQ of left breast anterior mid 3rd measuring 3.8 x 3.4 .x 3.8cm, biopsy clip is seen at inferior aspect of most anterior mass, no skin enhancement, enhancing irregular mass is seen in UIQ measuring 0.5x0.6x0.6 4.8 cm posterior to cluster of masses. Basically agree with report, but measure to be 3.8x4.2x4.0cm

Biopsy 2: Invasive Mammary Carcinoma, Nottingham grade 2, ICM measures 5 mm, small focus of carcinoma in situ is present, ancillary tests not submitted, essentially agree with originating pathologist, biopsy shows a small area of involvement by IDC.

So, are they looking at one area from the first biopsy that only shows a small section? Does the MRI enhance both DCIS & IDC and that is what the larger area is? MRI shows the second mass is "deeper" and the pathology report is different, what is IMC?

TIA

Sam

    Hi, Sam -

Can you call the Breast Center and find out if they have a Nurse Navigator on staff?

Those are the ones who generally go over all the pathology reports with you and explain the terminology. Mine even drew me pictures to illustrate further what my results meant.

And by all means, write down your questions, and don't let the nurse or the doctor get out the door without answering them! Sometimes it helps to have someone go along with you to be an extra set of ears.

    Wishing you the best...

    Thanks ladies!!

I started out in a small hospital, but had to be sent out of town for MRI and Sterotactic Biopsy so I decided to go the Breast Care Center that's about 40 miles away. I haven't been assigned a nurse navigator yet, but I think I'll contact the PA and ask.

I always forget the questions or forget the list, unfortunately, there is no one available to go with me that I would want there :).

I'm really thinking that they won't know what size, type, etc until we have final pathology--I guess that is common?

I have more appointments next Monday, followed by a SNB on Tuesday, then we map out surgery/treatment/reconstruction, but the SNB and genetic testing was info the doctor wanted first.

    Thanks again!
