Hi i know its scarry but there is postive steps in the fact you know you have the gene so can have reconstructive surgery and lower your risk. I have the gene too and have lost family members. I first got cancer when i was 29 when i gave birth to my third child again at 32 and again at 45yrs each time postive confirmation cancer had gone to my lymph nodes . It had spread to other breast. At 45 i had them both removed and a reconstruction using my back muscles. I now have amazing boobs i had nipple reconruction and tattoo and they look good better than post op state. I have had my ovaries removed and at 52 years life is good. As heartbreaking as it is and worrying ,you are in a postion to do something about it so be brave have reconstruction and put the fear behind you. I cant say it wont happen no one can but give your self the best odds. It not brilliant having all that work done on your self but its manageable and gives a good quality life afterwards./ I wish you peace and security knowing there lot help out there draw on your reserves we all have more than we think we have. Val

Sorry, sherburton, to hear you are positive for a BRCA1 mutation.

I would like to also recommend to you (in addition to this site which is also a wealth of info for high risk people when it comes to learning about surgeries, etc) the Facing Our Risk Empowered (FORCE) website and message boards. It is specifically for those with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) be it from a BRCA mutation, another mutation, or family history (unknown genetic factors). Lots of women there who can relate to you, who have or are having prophylactic surgeries, screening, and so on and can also relate to other concerns you can have as a BRCA+/high risk individual. FORCE also has annual conference meetings, and regular Webinars that cover a range of topics (they are also archived).

Sherburton - so sorry you are joining our ranks. Be sure to check out the FORCE website mentioned above. I highly recommend having a discussion with a genetics counselor if you have not already done so. Hugs and peace as you make these huge life changing decisions.
