In alot of PAIN !!!!
Does anyone have any recommendations for the post masectomy nerve pain ? its been 3 weeks since my mom's bi-lateral masectomy and she is in excruiciating pain .... nartcotics do nothing but make my mom drowsy, she's in alot of discomfort underneith both armpits and the back of the underarm area, feels like its burning and stinging, needles poking you etc... even putting on clothes really hurt .., ![]()
do any over the counter pain patches help ?
we have a call into to get something from the doctor. Every time we alert them to the pain we get told "keep taking your percocet " my mom can't live on narcotics every day and doesnt want too. Thank you for any recommendations... !!

Hi Lillywa, there is are two meds that I know of that target nerv pain, one is called Neuroveen and the other Lyrica. The Lyrica is prescription only but I'm not sure about the other one........it is possible that it is available over the counter as it's put out by the same manufacturer as Neurofen. Narcotics don't target specific nerve pain so are not effective for that.
Hope your mom gets some relief soon.
Love n hugs. Chrissy -
thank you Chrissy ! i will check out the neurofen.. appreciate your feedback ...

so... i just recently - sort of by accident - put capsaicin containing stuff on my mastectomy scars ... and the delightful result has been the low level pain that i've just sort of dealt with is .... gone. i think i had sort of just gotten used to it, but the absence of that low level pain has been ... lovely.
before you think about doing it - call her health care team and ask about options... PAIN SUCKS and does not help one heal up. and ask about using capsaicin containing stuff (cream, ointment, etc...)... cuz wouldn't it be great if she could use something that doesn't involve taking a drug?
turns out, there's a crazy bunch of bike racers out there (i'm one of them) that race in mud and snow and sand in cold weather. we use this stuff called embrocation. i recently one this little pot of capsaicin containing embrocation at a race, and i put some on my scars... and it's been a good little discovery. in case you're curious... the company name is donkey label and the embrocation is "medium" .... i really like this stuff, and it also moisturizes! and i happen to really like the way it smells.
also, pharmacies carry capsaicin containing creams and such as well.
she might have to wait a little bit before applying something directly onto her scars, but it might prove effective on her back where she has no scars. i had those weird sensations like what you describe - and phantom nipple sensations too... even if she has to wait a couple more weeks, consider trying it out once she's cleared for application of stuff onto her scars.
word of warning - capsaicin is the stuff that makes hot peppers hot... it's also a main ingredient in pepper spray... so - don't get it in your (or her) eyes! i've accidentally done that... ooops.
good luck. -
Thank you everyone for your kind feedback, these ideas have helped her some, we got a prescription for the neuropathic drug and that helped a little and the neuroveen cream did alleviate the burning and tingling as well.. she finally got a 5 hrs of restful sleep !! this chat room has been so helpful to my mother and I for ideas and guidance... Bless you all !!
