Good! I've always understood there are likely more breast cancer risk genes out there than the ones we currently know about - BRCA1 and BRCA2, PTEN, p53, CHEK2, etc. - but I was surprised by this statement in the article: "Currently only about 35 percent of the familial risk for breast cancer has been explained". I guess I didn't think it would be that low.

The more risk genes that are discovered, the less confusion and concern there will be for women who have a strong family history of breast cancer. More women will be able to get definitive answers about what gene is causing their family cancer and whether or not they carry that gene.

This article on the same topic is interesting too:

I know BRCA is linked with higher rates of ovarian cancers as well; does anyone know if these "new" gene mutations put anyone at higher risk for other stuff.

I was tested for BRCA (only because I was 1 month shy of 50 so they classified me as under 50) and had no family history of any cancer that I was aware of. I did have Ashkenazi jewish background on father's side, but my dad lost too much family to know what history there was.

I always wondered if i had some other genetic mutation and how at risk I am for other stuff.....but since we can't do much about it (genetic-wise)...just general vigilance I guess.

Wally, they checked me for the others because both my Dad's mom & sister had colon cancer & I had ovarian cancer, so yes.

On my mom's side I follow my mom, my aunt and my great-grandma. On my dad's side I follow my grandmother and all of her 6 syblings. I tested negative for BRCA and BART. When the counselor told me that I "was negative" I said, "You mean I tested negative for the genes that have been identified so far?" She smiled sadly and said yes.

Hard to imagine how many could be out there. I just worry about my young daughter. In addition to all of the above she also has her paternal grandmother, great-aunt, and great-grandmother. The family tree is full of pink ribbons. :-(

Dulci, same here. She just feels like there is something in my family that we don't know about yet.

That's exactly what mine said to me. I really wondered why they can't take my mom, aunt and I who are still alive and figure out what it is!!

Must not be that simple. ;-)

@MelissaDallas, two of my immediate family members died of colon cancer too. Do you have any links or other info about the genes you were tested for?

I never been tested for any genes but have to wonder if there is a genetic cause to all the cancer that has afflicted my family in this current generation. There is no history of cancer for several generations back on my mom's side of the family, but I believe a first cousin (daughter of my dad's half-sister) also died of some variety of cancer. My dad's mother died when he was very small and she was only 28, so we know nothing at all about the medical history of her family.

Just wondered if anyone knows if University of Washington offers a payment plan for their BROCA testing? I'm an uninformed negative for BRCA1/2. My insurance has approved paying 80%, but my share is $670.00 and I just wondered if they do a payment plan like Myriad?
