Yoga Journal: Yoga for Bone Health

Thanks for that. -
peggy j, Thanks for the article or rather, thanks for posting on this topic. I could not access it (error on Yoga Journal side), but I am a huge advocate of yoga. I'd been doing yoga for nearly 20 years prior to my BC diagnosis. A year out from my diagnosis, I started doing it on a regular basis (3-4 times per week). Not only have I had an improvement on my bone density, I have gained 1"!!! I still have osteopenia, but hope that if I commit to doing yoga for the rest of my life, the odds for my body type (small boned and petite) will be in my favor -
Wenweb, thanks for posting that. I have bad osteopenia on my spine and I am taking femara. My onc is pressuring me to start bisphosphonates or prolia and I am reluctant. I lift weights, walk and started some yoga exercises meant to improve bone density. I told him about the yoga and he completely poo-pooed it, so it is good to hear that you have had actual success with it. -
I am an advocate of yoga as well, and am committed to the bikram yoga practice (6 years now). I practiced throughout chemo and rads, and surgeries (with a modified practice). The latest dialog I had with my oncologist was when I asked her to write me an rx for yoga. We had just switched me from tamox to arimidex, and she told me that although I did well on tamox, about 40% of women have joint pain and stiffness. I asked her how to tx that and she said "stretching and heat". I said, "like bikram yoga?" she said yes, and I asked her for an rx, and she agreed (not a written one though), and now I make sure that 3x a week I go to the studio. I will not put it off for faculty meetings, etc. as I consider it part of my tx and wouldn't skip taking my meds, so I won't skip this part of my prescription either.
It helps me sleep, helps me keep my weight down, i've made friends for life, helps my skin, my heart, tones my muscles, it's amazing.

Glad this thread is helpful. I don't know what was wrong with the Yoga Journal website but the link above seems to be working now. FWIW, I just signed up for a class called "Intro to Pilates for Bone Health" offered through our local Parks and Rec department. Maybe there is something like this near you? The practioner's website made is sound like there were similar courses or practioners throughout the US (and world). -
peggy j, This time I was able to get into the journal article. Thanks again for posting it!! -
By the way, I saw an orthopedist recently, both because I have a terrible back and to ask what to do about the bone loss. He was not keen on bisphosphonates for me, basically thought it was jumping the gun. As in the article, he emphasized eating lots of veggies, especially greens as well as regular exercise. He also warned against boiling the veggies too much and advised eating as many raw veggies as practical. In a Greek context that is fairly revolutionary advice.
