I just received the call that I have DCIS in situ Stage 0 stating intermediate-high grade (basically inbetween grade 2-3) They are still waiting on my results for to see if it is fed by estrogen/progesterone.  I was told they got it all, clear margins, no more surgery needed.  If my results come back positive for estrogen/progesterone fed, then I would need to take a medication.  I see the Radiation Oncologist Nov.1st.

My mind is spinning.  I am going to meet with my BS NP next Tuesday to go over things and talk to her.

Should I get a masectomy or not?  All the things to worry about?  No one can answer that question, but yourself.

This is not the news I have been praying for.

You are in a tough spot. It really is the hardest at the beginning. I too was dx'd with DCIS, grade 3. I got a mastectomy and therefore no rads. I took tamoxifen for 11 months then stopped that because it hurt my bones. If I knew then, what I know now, and they told me they got it all, I'd have skipped the mastectomy. But as you pointed out, it's different for all of us so go with your gut feelings. J9

    gtgirl-

Did you have a lumpectomy already? I'm a bit confused on that you just found out but they got it all??

I was recently dx w DCIS gr 3 also. I am also ER+/PR+. I'm contemplating a DMX for various reasons. I have met with my BS and am scheduled to meet with the PS & Radiology Oncologist next week. After that I will make my decision. PM me if you want to chat more about your concerns.

    gtgirl,

This discussion board has a DCIS forum; why don't you come down and join us there? Here's one discusssion thread that in particular will be helpful to you, given your question about whether you should have a MX or not:

Topic: lumpectomy vs mastectomy - why did you choose your route?

And here is another more general thread with lots of the information about DCIS, that might help you start to formulate the questions you want to ask your doctors:
