I was recently diagnosed with Cysts in my breasts and they are pretty sure they are benign (I go in for a MRI on thr 29th).

I had surgery March 17th of 2011 to remove 2 non-cancerous cysts, and at that time i was told they probably not return and SURPRISE they did!

I have been told there are dozens in there and my options are surgery or leave them in. Surgery would be invasive and could cause ALOT of damage as there are so many. My husband and I have considered a full breasts removal but not sure if that is a option.

I guess, I am curious what you would do in this situation.

Ask me anything and I will try to answer!

Thank you

Jennifer

Cysts ARE benign. Most women who have them DO have multiples, often many. I have no idea why anyone would tell you you wouldn't just get more. Aside from being sore premenstrually they are harmless. Why would you consider a mastectomy for a harmless condition? If you have a large one that hurts it is a simple procedure to just have a fine needle aspiration to draw the fluid out of it and collapse it. 60% of women have fibrocystic breasts.

I was considering that option as having to have these painful things removed every year or two does not seem realistic.. we were not sure that is why we wanted so other input.

Also, I have a STRONG line of breast cancer in my family so that is why they are doing a MRI, to see if anything is "hiding" back there!

I understand, but cysts have no bearing on family breast cancer risk. They are in no way a risk factor for anything worse. Are you talking about fibroadenomas, not the cysts?

After two separate surgeries to remove fibroidadenomas in the past, my last doctor told me that if they come back (as they often do), to not bother removing them unless they become painful. As Melissa stated, they are harmless. Now, if you have strong genetic reasons to worry about developing BC and want to consider a prophylactic surgery because of it, that's a valid concern but one that is separate from your fibroid/cyst concern.
