Hi, all. I haven't been on here for a while, but find myself back. Last night, I found a couple of lumps on my chest a little above my left breast. I had a bilateral mastectomy with implants two and a half years ago. I'm in a bit of a panic. They feel hard and they're right next to each other. They seem to be in the skin, because when I pull the skin away, I can feel them in there. I am going to see my plastic surgeon to see if she thinks they have any relation to the implants, and going to the breast cancer clinic on Thursday, but I am in quite a panic. Any thoughts? Has anyone had anything like this? Could it be fat necrosis after all this time, or what??

Hi voicewriter, I'm so sorry you're having a scare. I had lots of grade 2 DCIS with necrosis and several DCIS post-mastectomy margins less than 1mm. My margins were so close that I'm one of the rare patients with clean nodes and a less than 1 cm invasive portion who needed post-mastectomy radiation. Thus, local recurrence is never far from my mind.

If you search "Not Diagnosed with a Recurrence or Metastases But Concerned," you will find more often than not that when women have found a lump months or years posturgery, that the lump turns out to be a benign condition like scar tissue or fat necrosis. I also recall a small study (I will find it for you), where only about a third of clinically suspicious post mastectomy lumps turned out to be recurrences.

However, I know all too well how you feel. After breast cancer, feeling something different on Uyour chest knocks the wind out of you. Sending you calming thoughts.
