    My Costco staples are Parmesan and assorted other cheeses, smoked salmon when I've made bagels, fresh peeled garlic cloves, all of my beef and most of the pork, garlic sausage, wine and liquor, celery, asparagus and haricots verts (if they are fresh looking), printer paper, lamb chops, Tuscan olive oil, sugar in the summer (for hummingbird food), pretzels, campari tomatoes in the winter, butter, half and half, cream, eggs in the winter, bananas in the winter, sometimes lettuce if I need a lot, facial tissues, all of my supplements, alleve and allergy meds, rosemary olive bread (when I'm lazy), a roast chicken, fresh flowers in the winter, whatever else strikes my fancy and a partridge in a pear tree. I have a friend who always goes with me and a lot of times we'll split things, which helps.


    I'm so very sad about Michelle. It's like another spoke in our wheel is missing. Like Susan, I hope she is in no pain and wish her and her loved ones peace.

    I am thinking of you, Michelle and family. I am so glad that you have each other at this time to comfort each other. Thank you Joyce for keeping us updated.


    I've gone to the garden three times this week. It would seem that the garden wants me to eat zinnias. The more I cut, the more grow. I give them to everyone. Down to a few tomatoes and a zucchini.


    I'm going to make mac and cheese with tomato slices in it.


    I had a dog when I lived in Georgia, part Blue Tick and part Great Dane. He used to 'paw' whatever he wanted while howling, including the fridge, the door, the couch, etc. I used to catch him, elbows on the counter, head looking in the kitchen sink at the drainer, to see if there were any scraps. Despite his size, he was terrified of the cat who spanked him about once a year to put him in his place.

    We don't have a Costco in this area but we have Sam's Club. I buy large chunks of cheese there and some of the same items available at your Costco stores.


    Tonight's dinner will be pork loin medallions with a mustard sauce. The recipe is in a Cooking Light magazine. I have to look it up. We'll also have salad and steamed yellow squash.


    I can only imagine how sad Joyce is feeling about Michelle. I've never met Michelle and I am very heavy-hearted over her decline. No one has ever fought harder or been braver than Michelle. It was a blessing to get to know her on bc.org.

    Count me in- I have had the pleasure of meeting Michelle several times. I have been thinking of her non stop, her family and Joyce. We joked at the get together's where I am so much younger that they are all my second mom's. (that includes you Pat.) So my heart is heavy. Such amazing people and we are all so lucky that we have found each other through this site. I am thankful.


    Dinner tonight is chicken parm.


    I also am guilty of going into Sams for one thing and leaving spending 100 bucks. Pj's, socks etc when I went for dog food and wipes :)

    I'm sorry to read about Michelle's decline. I always enjoyed her reading her posts about family and food. I admired her spirit despite her challenges.

    The news about Michelle, and the loss of Apple, Ebann, Cindy-Rose and others is the one part of bco that bothers me. It would probably be easier to just go away and hide.


    When "my" Mickey was in hospice, she told me over and over that her biggest fear (even above the worry about the pain meds not working well enough) was that I'd just give up on life and hide forever..."crawl into a hole and die with her" was how she would put it. She kept making me promise that I'd continue living life. The song she chose for her memorial, "The Rose" was a reminder to me about that promise. It took me several years to keep my promise and get back to living. And despite all the sadness, I'm better because of knowing her.


    It's the same way here. Despite the sadness, and the possibility of sadness, I'm better because of knowing everyone here. Thank you.


    I hope that makes sense.

    Hugs Eric. Mickey sounds like a wonderful woman. How'd you luck out twice? And well said. Its sad when people pass or are near and we will miss them, but we really are better for knowing them. Thanks for the reminder.

    Echoing Nance and Moon's thoughts about your poignant words, Eric.


    It's just so sad (and hard!) to again have the "opportunity" to rework all of our other losses with each new one.


    There has been so much loss endured by so many of the folks on this thread(not counting everyone's personal losses brought on by bc)...tho, fortunately, so much support from each other.


    I just HATE to think of Michelle in such a weakened state...we know her as such a vibrant woman! Such a fighter!!

    So it is almost 7 and I have no idea what I will eat tonight. DS1 just got back from soccer and it is mac and cheese and chicken nuggets for them. DH is making chili for our camping trip this weekend. This is our favorite camping trip- the Halloween weekend with trick or treating and pumpkin carving etc. I hit the dollar store today and got some great decorations for our campsite. Going grocery shopping in the morning so I need to come up with our weekend menu. There will be a chili cook off- which is why DH is getting his "chili on" now. I have absolute faith he will win! He feels it needs to sit for at least 24 hours before it is ready.


    So he has taken over the kitchen and the fridge os looking empty...dinner should be interesting, whatever we may find.

    This is news I was dreading to hear. (((Michelle and Family))). Joyce, I know you are a great friend of Michelle. I feel blessed to have met her at meet and greets for lunch at Pickity Place in Mason, NH, twice and the Glenview, in N. Chelmsford I met a lot of you, I have great pictures of us modeling my Fascinator at Pickity Place.


    When my DH was on his journey, he could not take care of himself and I could not bring him home. Hospice does not stay 24/7 so he was in Palliative care. It is heartbreaking to watch a loved one go through this. I saw my Mom and my DH slowly go through their journey.

    Laurie - that's the nights we have eggs, bacon and those wonderful frozen biscuits. Not healthy by any means. I agree with your DH about chili needing to "set awhile". Sounds like a wonderful weekend.


    Tonight is pork ribs and roasted Brussels sprouts (finally). Don't much go together but DH will be happy.


    Thinking of Michelle and her family. Praying for her and her sweet family and for bestest friend Joyce.

    I too am thinking of Michelle and her family. There is so much sadness right now. I have a friend who has a stage IV brain tumor who is 34 years old and not expected to live much longer. I freak thing. My MIL is becoming symptomatic of her stage IV uterine cancer. A friend of the family lost his son when he jumped off a bridge in NYC. 24 years old. So many people fighting for their life and another gives it away...


    Dinner ended up being tuna melts. I am tired and ready to head to bed. Can't wait for the camping weekend to take it easy and eat good food while I get some laughs with good friends!

    Yes, Laurie, the weekend with all the fun and favorite people will be just the elixor you need. Have a great time!


    We are also heading north to the lake house where DH will do some golf, and we will enjoy a lobster/steamers/king crab leg "fest" on the beach.


    DH has been like a little kid waiting for the evite announcement for this "grand buffe" since he was in total ecstasy enjoying these seafood treats last October. I think I may have mentioned before that what I especially like about this event is that the forty-something men in our association do all the planning, shopping, and cooking. Now that is a TREAT!!


    Tonight we spontaneously decided to go to the Celtics/knicks pre-season game that was in Providence (now that we realize that it is cheaper and faster to get there than to go into town....tho this is one of very few games played there). The bad news is that the food options were paltry. Had a piece of cardboard pizza....DH had a greasy calzone. Fortunately,I brought some gorp "just in case"and we devoured that by the third quarter.


    Michelle and Joyce, keeping you both in my thoughts....

    We went out for dinner tonight - had a nice salad and ribeye and steamed asparagus, and a lemon drop martini (shhh, don't tell!) and chocolate cake (shhh, don't tell!) - for my birthday. Just DH and I - DS is in VA and DD is at her internship, over in Clearwater, and worked tonight until 8:30 p.m. She had to go out today in a sea kayak and locate a dead sea turtle with infectious viral papilloma and bring it back to the aquarium. Someone called it in to the stranding team but didn't stick around to say where it was. Definitely not a boring job, right? She said her truck didn't smell so nice afterward.....


    Thinking of Michelle and her family tonight, and Joyce - I was going through my phone contacts and saw her number. It made me sad, but agree I am better to have had the opportunity to get to know her - here and in person.

    Hope you had a great Birthday SpecialK. I think you are enjoying your daughters job as much as she is. Lacey the seafood fest sounds so good. Yum. And even bettrr when the guys take charge.     Dinner was leftover stew I meant yo send with DH but forgot so gotta eat it. No room in the he upstairs freezer. And im not making a trip downstairs for three bowls of stew....

    moon - thanks for the b-day wishes! I think I am enjoying that the DD is doing interesting stuff and having life experiences! Sometimes it seems like 5 minutes ago she was just a little one - not any more! I am also probably living vicariously because unless I have an appointment (usually a doc appt.) or the DH is home - the days all blend together a little boringly - laundry, errands, etc! DH scared the crap out of me today - I was sitting on the lanai with the dog reading a magazine and having a cup of coffee and he surprised me by coming home in the middle of the day with roses for my b-day! I thought someone was breaking into the house!

    Happy Birthday Special K. Lemons and chocolate go well together.


    This will be apple pie making weekend. I put different things in the pies, I don't know if anyone else has ever put raisons, pears or slices of sharp cheddar , one or two in their pies. I like to make pastry apples and pears etc to put on top of the crust to show what's inside, and brush them with egg whites then sprinkle with sugar. I will have way too many of them, so it will be apple pie and zinnia time.

    bedo - dried cranberries are also good in place of raisins in the apple pie! I had a tummy ache after the lemon drop and chocolate cake - don't know which to fault - I think I had too many acidic things today and not enough food until dinner!


    moon - that happened one other time early in his military career. He and his commander (my DH was his executive officer) decided to come home early and scared both the commander's wife and me - she and I compared notes later - thought it was funny that we were so used to them never being home and when they tried to have a nice surprise, they scared us! Today was funny because the dog looked at me like "who's here, and what should we do?"

    Lacey that must be the absolute best, having the men doing the planning and cooking. Throw in a little shopping and you have the BEST weekend ever!


    Went to the local watering hole after late night at work....it was girlfriends birthday...shared a steak dinner with hubby and ended up having a tummy ache in the middle of the night. Ever since CA and chemo my stomach just does not tolerate some things (or eating late) but I just cant pinpoint what doesn't agree with me...totally random.


    Laurie Have a great time camping, the leaves should be gorgeous. What are the kids costumes this year?

    Happy Birthday, Special K! Your birthday dinner menu would have suited me fine except for the lemon martini. I would have gone for Grey Goose without the lemon. Vodka martini on ice is my favorite cocktail.


    Bedo, you sound happy about those apple pies!


    Lacey, your beach feast sounds like most people's fantasy seafood feast. Lobster AND King Crab legs. I had the King Crab once in Juneau and I experienced the reason for all the fuss and expense. The crab meat in butter and the little crab cakes were both so delicious. The outdoor restaurant was down on the docks where the cruise ships tie up and the weather wasn't good so we ate inside a tent set up by the restaurant.


    Nancy, I'll pm you the artichoke casserole recipe because I think I did post it. It's very easy and I like it a lot.


    Last night's dinner was pork scalloppine with mustard pan sauce. I try to find a variety of ways to prepare pork loin since it's the leanest pork. And DH isn't fond of pork loin. Finds it too dry. So I slice the pork loin into medallions and try different preparations. This recipe was easy. Pound the medallions thin. Quickly brown them in a small amt. of oil. I used grape seed oil. Keep them warm while you make the pan sauce. Diced shallots and garlic. 2 T whole-grain Dijon mustard, 1/2 cup chicken broth, 3 T sour cream. I had some mushrooms that were close to throw-away and I diced them and included them in the sauce. Tasty enough to cook again. Available on the Cooking Light web site.


    Cream would have made this pan sauce better but added fat. I don't keep cream on hand.


    Today will be a busy day so I'm looking for an easy dinner. Probably beef fajitas made with a small lean ribeye I bought from a farmer who grass-feeds his animals. Home-cooked black beans from the freezer, avocado, light sour cream and salsa. DH will be quite happy with the combination.

    Thanks for the recipe Carole. Have you tried brining pork loin? Makes a huge difference. We eat a lot of tenderloin too though.


    Bedo, I'll take your zinnias. I love them and the deer ate all mine this year. Didn't touch the snap dragons. Every year they pick a favorite flower to eat. Last year it was phlox. One year it was my sunflowers. Always roses day lilies.

    Hi Minus and all,


    I will be leaving next week, Thurs or Fri, as I will have to stay over in Fairbanks.


    I can tell you one thing, I will NOT be sending you recipes for caribou stew or Muktuk (whale blubber) which is actually sliced off with an ulu, a curved knife which looks like a 1/2 disc and eaten raw. I had a bite once so that I wouldn't seem ungrateful, because, the kids like it better than Doritos. It was the size of a snail and sat in my stomach for days I think.


    It tasted like snails. Another thing I ate once a long time ago
