Pre-existing neuropathy

Options

Does anyone know what chemotherapy is best for Stage 1 breast cancer when the patient has pre-existing idiopathic sensory neuropathy in her feet (for 3 years), fibromyalgia, and heat intolerance (I still get hot flashes even though I have been menopausal for 20 years)? My doctor is recommending TC. From what I have read on reliable and trustworthy websites, any taxane, like the taxotere in TC, can cause neuropathic side effects. But these websites never mention a word about chemo patients who have PRE-EXISTING neuropathy! Common sense tells me that my neuropathy stands a good chance of getting worse, or much worse, with chemo.

    Hi,

I had pre-existing neuropathy in my feet and fingertips from a previous cancer, leukaemia. I was diagnosed with BC 5 years after, not related at all.

I had stage 1, grade 3 tumour with 5/25 nodes affected. I had Doxetaxol, carboplatin and Herceptin. I didn't really have any change in my feet, my finger tips got a bit weird for about a week after each treatment.

I guess you will need to talk over this concern with your onc, as everyone is different.

    Good luck with your treatment

    Catbuster,

I also had pre-existing neuropathy in my hands (for years) - which would go totally numb at times. I was concerned about chemo (TCH) also and whether it would make it worse. Asked the doc who said he didn't think it would be a problem - and he was right. My numb, tingling fingers actually went away during chemo for the most part. I did have some slight tingling in the finger tips during the last half of chemo and still have it now 6 weeks pfc - but it is getting better and I hope its gone in a few months. But overall, my neuropathy is much better post chemo than before. Good luck!

    Annie
