Are there any good breast cancer charities to donate to?
Alright ladies I am very confused!! With October just around the corner I need someone to educate me. I have never really bought into the whole pink ribbon thing even though I have many family members with BC. I usually just ignored the pink ribbon propaganda that October brings. However now that I have BC I have had some people tell me that they are in a charity walk for me or that they are buying pink products for me!! Very nice gesture but where is their money really going? So now I need to know, are there any honest BC charities out there? Ones that do not spend all their money on CEO's salaries? Ones that are actually working on a cure or better treatments for stage IV patients? It is all very confusing!!

I won't recommend specific charities bec. it really depends on your own goals & prefs, but you can use a tool like http://www.charitynavigator.org/ to evaluate charities for how they spend their money. Note that only big nonprofits reporting to the IRS are evaluated, but there's a lot of useful info available.
Also, this won't be able to determine the true value of specific campaigns by for-profit companies, like when a retailer paints something pink & says a % of profits go to BC research - you have to really follow up on those claims individually. -
Maybe there are some honest ones but I havnt found any
Either I donate to BCO because they help us in every aspect of bc.
Or
I help someone I know that has the beast by either cooking a meal or just some financial help..there are a lot of sistas that help each other
Why give to a charity ????charity begins at home???here..
Focktober stinks...pink stinks too. -
I like Breast Cancer Research Foundation,BCRF. Check out website which boasts of its high charity rating among philanthropic watchdogs.
Highly rated among charities, very little goes to administrative/overhead and more than 90% directly into programs and research.
"BCRF remains one of the most fiscally responsible charities in the country. For the eleventh time since 2002, it has earned 4 stars from Charity Navigator. Additionally, BCRF is the only breast cancer organization rated an "A+" by CharityWatch."
-
BCRF does have a good reputation in terms of maintaining a pretty small staff and having a very excellent ratio of administrative cost to money that actually goes to research, but my complaint about them is that they are very firmly tied to Estee Lauder cosmetics - which owns Clinique, Bobbi Brown, MAC and a bunch of other cosmetic companies - and they produce cosmetics with carcinogens. This seems like a bit of a disconnest to me personally. You always have the option of donating to any research organization affiliated with an NCI hospital - which is what I do, or I imagine, directly to the NCI. They are among the organizations actively pursuing research that will hopefully lead to a cure.

Thanks ladies!!

You might want to check out Stand Up 2 Cancer.
This is from their website:
How will donations to Stand Up To Cancer be used? 100 percent of the donations received from the public will go directly to cancer research.
We have partnered with the prestigious American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to provide scientific oversight and expert peer review, and administer Stand Up To Cancer grants, which fund:
- Dream Teams (multi-disciplinary and collaborative groups of scientists that will be responsible for conducting novel, groundbreaking cancer research projects that address critical problems in patient care and are designed to deliver near-term patient benefit). The research being done by the Dream Teams already at work has the potential to impact the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cancers that are responsible for two thirds of the cancer deaths in the U.S.
- Individual innovative grantees conducting high-risk, potentially high-reward research projects that would often not be supported by conventional funding sources.

Sheesh - got a call at 9 pm last night... then a hang-up when my answering machine came on.
I Googled the number, and found out from various sources that it came from an organization called "The Breast Cancer Society"... along with thousands of angry comments about how what a scam organization this is.
Apparently they operate under the umbrella of "Cancer Fund Of America", along with numerous similarly-named "charities", and all the executive officers in each organization are all members of the same family.
Each of their "charities" has been investigated for both criminal and civil complaints, and the hundreds of thousands of dollars they squeeze out of unsuspecting donors simply goes straight to their wallets, or to pay for additional aggressive telemarketing firms.
So, great question, shoppygirl!!! I've been wondering the same thing myself, as during the month of October, I make it my personal mission to educate my family and friends about the hideous practice of pinkwashing.
I would like to offer then a more honest alternative.

Guidestar.org has most all non-profit IRS filings. It shows how much they earned, how much the executives get in salary and how much they spend. It's a great site for large and small organizations.
You have to register to use the site but its free. I've been using it for years. It's a wonderful resource! -
Blessing20-NEVER, but NEVER, give any money to any one ever who is simply phoning you!!!! I don't care what they say. Breast cancer, save the children, police benevolent society, any one, anything. Your college or any other bona fide will be happy for the 'pledge' / promise then will follow up in writing! You tell any bozos calling to contact you in writing and you'll be happy to read all about it, you don't 'do' phone solicitations. They NEVER do follow up in writing....any of them.

Thank you for all the responses. It is crazy the amount of products that they plaster the pink ribbon on. As a sales rep for a dairy I am in grocery stores all day an feel inundated with it! Today I saw it on foil baking pans, brooms and an ice cream scooper! Insanity!!
-
Here's two new ones: pink light bulbs and pink PUMPKINS (cross between a pumpkin & a squash)!

You can contribute to breastcancer.org right here.

I didn't even realize that they took donations! Now that is a worthwhile cause!!! -
Metavivor.org is volunteer run and gives 100% of funds to breast cancer research. They focus on cutting-edge research that keeps people alive and hopefully lead to a cure. They are headquartered in Maryland and I've met these folks. They are patient people and are all breast cancer fighters.

jessica749 - Whenever I get a call from a telemarketer representing a "Breast Cancer" charity, I always ask them to send ME money, since I qualify.
They hang up really fast after that.
(Sometimes when I'm really bored, I go along with the caller especially if I KNOW they're a documented scam, which, unfortunately, most are. But that's a whole 'nuther story!!!)

Yeah, my nurse tried to encourage me to donate on ACS and I found out that during my journey they haven't help me at all. They give you somebody to talk to but they live on the East Coast and you could not even call them anytime. You have to call the ACS first then someone will call you very late in the evening and wil, tell you they cant talk that long coz its already midnight in their area. I went to get some free wig and aftre I been driving that far I could not even use it coz it was really cheap and doesnt look good. They also rented a place which kind of pretty scary to go on your own coz the neighborhood seems funky so I left and cancel my appointment and went to their other location. I put them in my spam when they email me coz they havent really help at all. I will not even donate my time for a walk coz for me most of these organization dont care about us but just care about their pockets. They care about numbers. The only place that help me with support is this website. People her are real and they help me a lot with dealing on side effect and emotional ups and down.

Celina. Try Imerman Angels. They are incredible

Melissa---u r so right
Why not donate to BCO
They are there for all of us 24/7. -
I agree with donating to BCO.
I have also given to the Catholic hospital near me where I had all my surgeries. I remember getting a big billin the begging and called them to see if we could work out a payment plan as I was scared about how many more bills were on the way. They said yeah, never bothered me and I still paid them but on a payment plan. So, I like em! Their breast center has grown in the past 5 years like so many. But this keeps the money in my community

I support the CIBC Run for the Cure that is held here in Canada. I used to get so sick of all the pink stuff, bake sales, raffles etc. every time I went in the bank.
Then, I got diagnosed and where did I end up? At the CIBC Breast Centre at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. And now I have done a complete 360 on the bank's fundraising.
In the year I have been going there, I have seen some improvements in an already excellent clinic. When I had my first mammogram since surgery, I had the results before I left the hospital. No anxiety waiting for a week for results.
I'm going to be volunteering at this year's race. And I'm quite excited to be able to 'give back' a bit to an agency that has been really great to me.
I would also support BCO for the same reason...don't know how I would have survived without it.
-
I am trying to get the sistas to donAte to BCO instead of all these charities, hospitals etc...
Sure they help us.its their job to give you great Are etc...I understand many hospitals stink but they get funding just like these races and all that pink crap.
Yeah they help people too.they collect tons of $$$$$
I'm very angry in Focktober...
So I along with others(I hope)will make a pink donation to BCO.
By the end of Focktober I'm tryin to get lots of sistas to put their hands in their pocketbook and give something..anything ..
Please if you are interested pass the word
Paying it forward.
Thanks

My birthday is in October. Instead of gifts, I've asked folks to give to METAvivor

Yes, BCO and Metavivor.org.
