Cold cap study enrolling now in N.C.

Options

Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem NC is enrolling patients this week in a study that uses a type of cold cap called DigniCaps to prevent hair loss during chemo. The study is for Stage I and II breast cancer patients. I am

Stage IV and can't participate but wanted to share this with others. If anyone is interested in the study, please contact Scarlett Hutchens, the study coordinator nurse, snhutche@wakehealth.edu.

    Hi TarheelMichelle -

I am in the study at Baptist.  I had my first treatment on Sept. 17th and I will have my 2nd treatment on Oct. 8th.

How was the first time? Did nurses help you with the caps? I hope it is successful for you. Whatever the result, you are helping many ladies who will follow you.

The nurses were awesome!  They are in charge of the study.  The company Dignitana is sponsoring the company, so they provided the machine, caps, and camera for pictures.  Here's the link:

I will post updates along this journey.

HI Tarheel Michelle - I wanted to check in and see how you were doing? I was at Baptist yesterday for my 2nd T/C treatment. I had a lot of shedding on Tuesday and my MO said I had already lost about 20% of my hair (which is more than most patients at this stage). I hope it slows down. I've been wearing a hat and cap around the house so I won't pick at it as much. I've been praying for you and hope your treatments are slowing the cancer down.

    Hugs,

    Melissa

Hi Melissa, I'm hoping that your hair loss, since it is starting early, will end early. Don't be discouraged by what the doctor said. Most women don't use cold caps, and this is a trial, so there's no established norm. Plus, what you are doing is helping other women who will follow after you SO MUCH.

During my last doctor consult, I learned that my M.O. doesn't want me to do chemo, so I'm staying on Tamox for now, and adding Afinitor. Thanks for the prayers, and I'm sending some your way, too.
