Achilles Tendonitis post chemo - anyone else?
Hi - Just joined today and have a question for those who are undergoing or have completed chemo.
I developed tendonitis in both achilles during my first chemo treatment in June 2009. It bothered me throughout treatment but I ignored it and just didn't walk long distances very often. Of course that only added to my weight gain during chemo.
Once radiation was over (Oct 2009) I started trying to walk for exercise and just couldn't do it with the achilles pain. First visited family doctor in December and made appt with podiatrist for Jan 2010. Physical therapy Jan-March, immobilization of worst ankle for 2 weeks plus steroids, then back to PT for another month. Still no better - as a matter of fact left side is worse - about where right side was when I started.
I will be going back to the podiatrist again tomorrow but have been doing research on drug causes of achilles tendonitis. For example the antibiotics Levaquin and Cipro can cause this but it usually resolves once off the drug. High doses of steroids can also cause this and I did have dexamethazone prior to each chemo infusion - I did not consider that a really high dose and it was just for one day every few weeks.
My original treatment was to be Taxol plus Cytoxan but I had a very severe allergic reaction to the Taxol so my regimen was changed to Doxirubicin (Adriamycin) plus Cytoxan. I did have the neulastin shots as well.
If there is anyone else out there who developed this while on chemotherapy (and it definitely started long before I began taking aromitase inhibitor), let me know. None of my docs have heard of this being caused by chemo, but if antibiotics can do it (and I read that that is because they stop the growth of dividing fibroblasts that heal the everyday damage to our tendons) then it seems that chemo drugs that attack dividing cells could do the same thing.
Sorry for the long post. I am just really frustrated with this. Also have other tendons with pain, but they don't slow me down the way the achilles does.
By the way, for those just beginning treatment or just finishing - there IS life after BC treatment. One year after end of chemo I have hair (curly for the first time in my life!) almost down to my shoulders! And the fatigue gradually got better over the course of the year and I feel I am now back to my previous energy levels. Good Luck to all.

Hi Suefg:
Just a quick response to your post. Not only did I develope tendonitis after chemo ( last treatment July 2007) I also have trigger in both middle fingers on both hands and what appears to be achilles pain on the right side. I received 2 prednisone shots yesterday,one1 in my left wrist & one in my left ring finger to help with the pain.
I have been told by a rhumatoligist, my primary care MD and my oncologist the pain I am experiencing (tendonitis in the left wrist, trigger fingers, neuropathic pain in my right ring finger, and the pain in my right achilles tendon) ALL are a side effects from chemo.
Although I was diagnosed with arthritis many years before I received the BC diagnosos, none of these issues developed until I had chemo. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

I did not go through chemo however I did develop hip/knee pain and tendonitis after being on Arimidex about 4 months. I had to give up playing tennis, and I LOVE that game. They gave me two weeks off and then started me on Aromasin. I only lasted two weeks on it although the hip/knee pain and tendonitis did subside somewhat, there were neuropathy issues as well as UTI problems that would not go away. They then gave me a month off and now I am on Tamoxifen (about 3 weeks) and so far it is okay. The tendonitis issue did not totally resolve and it still gets sore but I am no longer limping. I have been asked to play tennis again this coming week.......so I am going to give it a shot and hope for the best.
I hope that your issues resolve soon as I know how uncomfortable it can be.

Hi there
I know it's been a while since the original post, but I just wanted to share that I've been dealing with Achilles Tendonitis since the last few weeks of my chemo around September 2011. It's gotten a little better now that I've been seeing a podiatrist and have been wearing custom orthotics, but it's definitely not completely better, and I have to be careful not to put too much strain on it. I had never had problems with my feet (or any part of my body) until breast cancer..I had chemo from June - Sept 2011 (ACT regimen every other week), then 6 weeks of radiation, and now Tamoxifen. I'm feeling more or less like myself, a little squishier to the touch, and a lot tougher on the inside : )I hope the tendonitis has gotten better, and that you're staying healthy! Thanks for the original post, and good luck to everybody. -
This also comes a long time after the original post.
I am also having Achilles problems since undergoing chemo earlier this year. I have what seems to be Achilles tendinosis in the early stages - stiffness in the Achilles tendons on both sides when I get up in the morning. Apparently it can progress to having the stiffness all day in the later stages, so I'm definitely going to ask for a referral to the podiatrist.
My fabulous oncologist told me today that the Achilles problems definitely are not caused by the chemo or Arimidex, but now after reading these posts and others on the internet I'm wondering if he is fully informed about this. He's still fabulous but I'm going to have to advocate for myself.
Thank you to all who have posted on this topic - your stories have really helped. I hope that you have found relief from your Achilles problems and other symptoms.

Hi all, I completed 6 months of ACT in March 2011, then did 6 weeks of rads. Began having pain in tendon of rt elbow soon after, went to an Orthopedist who gave me cortisone shots, which didn't help much. I attributed it to carrying my Maltese, using only my rt arm and have learned to live with it.
Shortly after that, I began having Achilles' tendon pain on the left foot, which I attributed to walking too much when I wasn't conditioned, having been so sick and out of work for a year.
I went to a podiatrist once who prescribed rehab but said we needed to wait for my other foot to heal first(broken toes and twisted ankle from a bad fall down the stairs.) I tried to take it easy and thought over time it would go away but instead it got a lot worse. My rt Achilles' tendon on the back of my heel looked like I had a lime attached to it!
Went to the same Orthopedist, who diagnosed Achilles Tendonosis, since there now appeared to be small tears in the tendon! I am in agony! Prescribed rehab, where I have going 2X week for the past 2 weeks. Slightly better but still taking mega Ibuprofin, trying to keep it elevated when I'm home from work, and icing it.
The rehab therapist is the first person that told me of the correlation between chemo and Achilles' tendonitis! She suggested I look it up and here I am!
I have been taking Aromasin for the past 1.5 yrs and have another 3.5 years to go. Side effect from that is constant aching, flu like, in my legs and arms but now I'm wondering if its contributing to the issues with my tendons
Am seeing my Oncologist next week and will be asking him.
Thanks for this post and may your bodies all be restored to how they once were! -
Soon after I finished my radiation treatments preceded by 6 rounds of chemo. My ankles started hurting and kept getting worse. I started wearing my orthodics, but that didn't seem to help. I went to a podiatrist and found out I had tendonitis in both ankles, but not the achilles. Mine is across the top of my inside ankle bones. My physical therapist is the one who told me that chemo affects the connective tissues and can cause tendonitis. I had steroid injections and wore an air cast for six weeks on the worst ankle. Then moved into braces on both ankles that I can wear in my shoes. When I wear the braces, I have virtually no pain. As soon as I'm on my feet for even a couple hours without the braces my ankles hurt. Sorry to hear that others are suffering too, but that's why I googled it, to see if anyone else had this problem.

So interesting to read these posts. I thought it was just me!! I did 4 rounds of AC last year and it is only now that I am having problems. My left achilles tendon is stiff every time I stand up. Very sore, but comes right when I walk around. Will it go away on its own?? I am also having shortness of breath and slightly swollen hands and feet. Using a diuretic at the mo and that helps. Worrying about chemo-induced congestive heart failure......seriously, just when you think the worst is over?! I hope you are all feeling better, and the pain is going. So interesting to know others have same issue.

Update to my previous post. Achilles Tendonitis in both ankles but the one that was worse before is now the better of the two.
Did not develop full blown until a year post chemo. I'm thinking now it didn't show itself until I became much more active but I was also taking Aromasin, which causes joint pain and I think has contributed to my current state of agony.
My Rt knee has been getting steadily worse, to the point that it was waking me up at night and on a scale of 1-10, the pain was a 15. -
I have been taken off Aromasin, since bone density showed deterioration in mg spine. Oncologist wanted me to take Flosamax weekly, in addition to mega but D and calcium daily.
Dual Achilles Tendonitis has been so painful, and when you add in the knee spine issues I said enough.
On a 2 week cleanse and will then start Tomoxifen.
It's like a switch went off! It'd only been s week and my ankle pain is only mild in comparison. I feel alive again because I can bear standing in my kitchen and cooking.
This is the first time since being diagnosed, I've felt this good.
My wonderful Oncologist days the same. There is no correlation between my Achilles issues and arthritis, and chem, but for me even more so the Aromasin. Bad stuff.
Now it's time to read up on Tomoxifen's SEs. -
My supervisor told me this week, she saw a program where a woman was talking about how her young son developed Achilles Tendonitis during chemo, and could hardly walk. She said she researched it and they tried botox injections, and it worked! I've spent a little time looking this up as a treatment but haven't found anything. Has anyone else heard of this?
-
Hi Eve, I see that you haven't posted in awhile but if you read this please PM me. I am interested to see if you ever had Botox for the tendonitis and if so how it worked. Thanks, corky60.

Curcumin, which is a concentrated form of turmeric, has worked wonders on my Achilles Tendonitis. No more arthritis in my rt knee either! Read a post that I wrote in 9/2013 where I describe being woken up at night with knee pain of 15, on a scale of 1-10! I had forgotten!
I got my mom a bottle too and her arthritis pain is gone!
Got mine through Amazon, Eden Gardens I think, the 1 with 5 stars. The reviews were so great, after my cousin told me about it, I had to get it.
A 2 month supply is under $25, based on taking 2000 units a day. Take 2 pills every morning. As it's a natural antiimflamitory, also has helped my mom with sinus congestion and me with the Graves Disease I have in my rt eye. Both my eyes are the same size now!!
-
My Achilles Tendonitis is getting so much better. No more limping to the bathroom mornings, no more pain killers, no more prescribed compound that I had to rub on 3-4x a day just to be able to get to work, and about. The lime size lump on the back of my heel is gone now and I'm hopeful since I'm able to walk without pain I'll lose weight, as I plan to try walking sneakers again and walk more.

FYI, I stopped tomoxafen on 2/24/14 as it was making me so foggy headed, I couldn't remember anything and it was seriously impacting my ability to do my job and live my life.
My oncologist and I agreed on a 1 month vacation but as the month is almost up and I'm feeling so great, I don't know what I'll do.
-
suefg,I also underwent chemo and radiation for breast cancer. Finished at the end of May 2009. I developed tendonitis in my wrists/hands but not my Achilles. I underwent surgery on my left hand/wrist on May 7, 2014. So far, it has not helped. Went back to the doctor today. He doesn't have any answers at this point. Says give it a little more time and put me in another type of brace. Bummer because if it works, I will have my right side done. It is very painful. I also have knee pain, hip pain and pain in both feet. I've been worked by rheumatologist, etc and no one has any answers for me either.
-
surge, the pain you describe may be a side effect of the meds you're on.
When I was on femura and arimidex the pain was so bad only Percocet would work. I said this is not the answer as I'll grow addicted. They switched me to Aromasin which was much better. Only need to take an occasional Tylenol.
Unfortunately, a bone scan showed marked deterioration in my spine after being on it for less than a year, which really scared me as I've delays had strong bones. He wanted me to take fosomax (sp?) 1x weekly to counteract that but I declined thinking enough already with all these drugs!
Was a Tomoxafen for only 3 months and made the decision to stop taking it be sirs it was making me do foggy headed I couldn't do my job or function, overall.
As of this week, I'm back on the Aromasin and taking the 1x week bone fortifier. This decision was based on fear alone since in a recent pet, nodes in my lungs and near my abdomin lit up, so now I'm under going a 2nd biopsy to R/O Lymphoma. If it is lymphoma it's considered an entirely different cancer and one of the risk factors got one of the chemos they gave me.
Damned if you do or don't.
I'm so sorry the surgery didn't help. My orthopedist told me about a treatment they are having a lot of success with called platelet rich plasma therapy, I believe. It's been used for decades in the OR to speed healing, particularly when going back surgery. They have been finding its great at repairing I'm other areas but apparently insurance won't cover it because it's considered off label. Cost was about $2-3k, per ankle.
I was thinking of fighting my insurance company to cover it since the cost is way less than surgery and the recovery period is immediate. Ridiculous and cruel the way they jerk us around.
Praying things turn around for you.

AT 4 months after finishing Fec T Chemo., and 2 months after 4 weeks Radiotherapy

Both of my achilles tendons are very painful. Many mornings I cannot walk - I kind of slide/shuffle until they loosen up a little.
I have been trying to work out why they are so painful and inflexible and only this morning did I see your post and look further into it being related to some chemotherapy treatments. I can see from other entries through Google search that it does not appear to be uncommon. It's strange that sharing an issue with others is somehow comforting.
The pain is so bad at times that I cannot touch the area and the pain stretches up my lower leg through the calf which at times becomes quite cramped.
I am applying an Asprin based cream for arthritis to the area which does provide some good relief.
My first post treatment mamogram and follow up Oncologist/surgeon appointment after that and I will be discussing this Achilles issue and find out if there is anything that I could do to relieve the pain or stop the problem.
I will try to remember to share the outcome with you and I hope that you will do the same if you come across anything?!
Take very good care, Kerrie

Dear CactusGarden - Welcome to Breastcancer.org and thank you for posting!
Unfortunately this thread has been quiet for quite a while, and the member who started the thread hasn't been active since 2010, so it's unlikely you'll get any feedback from her. If you want you can share your particular situation and find answers and support from others by starting your own new topic on this issue. Under this same forum should be fine. Let us know if you need help doing this!

I have experienced a great deal of pain in both my Achilles tendons following chemo therapy. I have asked my oncologist and radiologist both have said it is not related to my radiation or chemo treatments. I received my final chemo treatment on March 14, 2018 and my last radiation treatment in June. I've been trying to get some relief for this issue since I began chemo. I have gone to see a podiatrist and were given orthotics for my shoes but they have not provided me any relief. My podiatrist says I have a heal spur that was caused by a tight Achilles tendon but that still doesn't give me an answer for the pain in the first place. I'm still in pain and gaining weight fast. Not to mention chemo pushed me into early menopause, making weigh loss a whole new beast for me. My general practitioner says I need to workout in a pool for weightlessness but I do not own a pool and I don't live near a pool. I live in the country. The nearest pool for me is 35 miles away.
