Don't expect any help from komen,,,especially $$$$$$$

Sorry..I guess komen changed a few things.
When I called komen in 2010 they told me all we do is give free mamos.
They told me to call ACS.they never called me back
I needed transportation to go for rads.
Finally I got a local small company who took my insurance and brought me everyday. -
fredntan, there are several resources listed in the Paying for Your Care section of the main Breastcancer.org site. The ACS has a search tool to find local resources, which will vary from place to place.
We hope your friend can find the financial and other help she needs!

Check out the medicare BCCCP program. It is for women over 50, with breast cancer and no health insurance. I was told you have to sign up for it before your official diagnosis (biopsy). No income limits (high or low). Breast center send me to sign the paperwork the morning before my biopsy. Saved me financially as I am a self employed single parent with no insurance - it covers 100% of your treatment costs. I signed the paperwork at our local women's hospital. -
Hi fredntan,
You got a lot of good suggestions here. I would like to add to Annie's note about the BCCCP program. It is funded by Medicaid and administered by each state. It's a federal law that each state must have this program. You can find out more information on this program by calling your local health department or free clinic. You can also check the internet for the program in your state. It is called something different by each state and the regulations may vary a bit. I was able to use this program here in Virginia. It saved my life as I am self-employed and was uninsured when I was diagnosed. This program covers any and all treatment regimens as well as medications for as long as you are under the breast cancer umbrella.
I hope your friend is able to find some assistance.
hugs,
Bren
PS .. Here is a link to the site for Virginia. -
Bren - thanks for adding the specific information about how to find out about the BCCCP program. I was just pulled through the steps without a lot of explanation of the program so couldn't give much detail. It was a life saver for me also - and I want other women to know about and benefit from it.

Annie .. at the time I qualified for this program I was rushed through it as well. They qualified me retroactively after my biopsy. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it was sponsored under "family planning" at my health department. And I also had to have a pap smear done at the health department. Then I had to sit through a family planning lecture about different methods of birth control. It might be different in other states though.
It was really hard for me to present myself at the health department. In the past, I had always had the gold standard of medical insurance through my employers. I cried through the whole experience. I live in a very rural area and it was not the same as going to a regular doctor or gynecologist. The people involved with the heath department were very kind and understanding. Another thing that was hard for me is that I was referred to as a number when I had my appointment with them. I guess they do that to protect your anonymity.
Anyway ... it's been a lifesaver for me too! So glad you're spreading the word about this program.
hugs,
Bren
