Immune System/Lymphedema/Cellulitis
Hi Ladies, I was just released from the hospital after a 5 day stay for my third bout of cellulitis/sepsis. I am looking for ways to boost my immune system, the more natural the better. Can you recommend any supplements, teas, etc that may help. I have been under a tremendous amout of pressure and stress and my white count always drops during these times. Thanks, Katiejane

Katiejane, Im sorry you are going thru this. I also just got out of hospital for cellulitis so I obviously am not doing things right. Lol. I just wanted to tell you I know how miserable it is and I hope you feel better

Hugs to both of you!
melmcbee, I doubt that it's a question of not doing things right, if you're taking basic precautions to avoid infection such as attending to cuts properly etc. Don't be too hard on yourself!
As to immune function, I do believe in the common-sense element of David Servan-Schreiber's 'anti cancer' diet, which makes sense for any immune-boosting need, and it boils down to: eat a diet that's very diverse in fruits and vegetables. Another researcher (who is leading trials at MD Andersen to test anti-cancer properties of a number of spices) tells us in his book The Healing Power of Spices to add diverse spices to our diet. I don't believe for a minute that food or spices = a miracle cure for anything, but it just makes sense to me that eating a whole food instead of what's extracted for a supplement gives us more than what meets the eye.
I can't say a fruit-veggie-spice (oh, and green tea, according to Dr. Servan Schreiber) - rich diet will prevent cellulitis, but it *might* help and can hardly harm us. I drink some green tea each day (not buckets full) and I shoot for at least 25 different fruits and veggies each week, which turns out not to be hard to do. And I spice up what I cook. And I cross my fingers and hope all my health evils are behind me!

Hi Katiejane!
In addition to learning from members here, you may want to check out the article Boosting the Immune System to Fight Cancer from the main Breastcancer.org site.
We hope this helps!

KatieJane, some people with recurrent cellulitis will be put on prophylactic antibiotics by an infectious disease doctor. Now, just yesterday the CDC put out a bulletin about antibiotic resistance, but one of the points was to AVOID infection.
Your immune system is compromised systemically after the chemo and locally with the LE, and recurrent cellulitis can be avoided with prophylactic antibiotics, although when they stop them, sometimes it recurs. I'd strongly recommend you meet with an infectious disease doctor or discuss it with your oncologist.

I take chlorypyll liquid twice a day to boost my iron, but I just read an article that it is very helpful with supporting the immune system. I know keeping a good lotion on your lympedema limb/trunk can help avoid dry/cracked skin. Avoid having hang nails, keep nails trimmed (clean clippers with rubbing alcohol before use) I recently read to not even paint your nails because it taxes your immune. So that would make me think any kind of chemicals (household/beauty products etc) should be avoided by touch. I have a script for silvadene and the second I have any type of an open wound I clean it with rubbing alcohol and then slather with this cream and cover. Good luck to both of you ladies!

Wow! Thank you everyone! I know my immune system must be shot as I now have a sore throat as well! Also, I have heard curcumin or turmeric are good for the immune system. I will do some research tonight and hope to turn this old body around!! LOL! Thank you all again!
