My oncologist said I am allowed 2 alcoholic beverages a week, however, I decided to cut out alcohol except on special occasions (birthdays, trips, etc). Are there survivors that drink alcohol and if so how much? Do u ever drink more then 2 beverages a week?

It is well known that alcohol is a risk factor for breast cancer. You do not need your oncologist's permission to drink alcohol. You have to make up your own mind. Remember, every drop of alcohol that you drink increases the risk of the cancer coming back. I think you are wise to keep it to a minimum. It is an addictive drug.

I have not touched alcohol since well before diagnosis and drank only a very occasional glass of wine before that.

I also do not touch dairy products. I am nearly eight years out since diagnosis and have no desire to drink alcohol.

I hope this helps and I wish you well. Ultimately we all make up our own minds what we are going to eat and drink. Doctors are not well known for having much knowledge of nutrition.

    Wishing you the very best.

    Sylvia.

Well, when I was given a choice of doing chemo or not (my tumor, while triple negative, was very tiny), I told my oncologist in a fit of panic that I would do the chemo.

Her advice:  "go home, have a glass of wine and think about it some more".  (She was opposed to my doing chemo but the oncology staff felt I should be given the choice.)  By the way, my oncologist practices at what many consider the best cancer hospital in the U.S.

I took it from her comment that she was not terribly concerned about alcohol intake for me.  I also have gathered that alcohol intake is more of a recurrence risk for those who had ER+ tumors.

In any event, I have chosen to drink wine on special occasions, but I certainly don't drink it daily.  I tend to have a couple of glasses when I do drink, but then I might not drink anything for six weeks or more.  I have seen studies that two glasses at once is more dangerous than two glasses in a week.

But, honestly, I've also seen numerous studies and analyses indicating that the research on alcohol is not all that reliable in terms of causation.  Dh's doctor told him if she were diagnosed with BC she would not give up wine based on the studies she's seen.  So, I'm not sure it's technically correct to say, as the previous poster did, that every drop of alchohol increases the risk that the cancer will return.  It does not seem nearly that definitive when one reviews the studies carefully.

I've lost 55 pounds and now have my BMI in the healthy range.  I do aerobic exercise on the treadmill and elliptical for an hour or more at least five times per week.  I am careful about what I eat -- meat only very occasionally (perhaps 2-3 times per year), not much dairy and only low fat if I have it, lots of veggies, fruits and beans.  I also eat a few nuts and olive oil, but I try to keep my fats low.

So, I give myself a treat and have a glass or two of wine on special occasions.  And, when I do drink, I make sure it's really good wine and I really enjoy it!

Yes...I still drink, eat dairy products..whatever...

The studies I have researched say that drinking is not good for er pr positive cancers...no research at this point yet triple negatives...

On the other hand, I drink green tea, take alot of supplements and run alot....I enjoy drinking AND exercising...everything in moderation...you gotta live...

I haven't had a drink since my surgery on January 14th! But my 10 year wedding anniversary is in one week and I plan to have a drink or two!!

I also drink occasionally, but not regularly. I've never been a daily wine drinker. I eat meat and drink skim milk. But most of what I eat is organic and I try to stay away from processed food as much as possible. I love fresh fruits and vegetables. I exercise regularly--aerobics and walking. Other than that, I try to keep my stress level in check (not always easy). Oh and I LOVE coffee!

I'm with titan and gilly.... moderation. I love a glass of red wine with dinner, though not every night. I'm not going to give up my life's little pleasures.

Before BC dx I had 1-2 beers every couple of weeks and occasional wine but also very rare. Since dx only 1 beer and that is it, my choice not the Dr's. Red meat 2-3x a month, but dairy is my down fall. Low fat ice cream and skim milk. I just started exercising in January 4-5 times a week, walking 1.5 miles and elliptical 30 minutes. I didn't want cancer to rule my life, just trying to make small changes. 2 years out this August.

I discussed this at length with my Dr. and he said everything in moderation.  There is no medical evidence that alcohol effects the recurrence rates of TNBC.  The sugar does show some effect on hormone positive.  My cancer has not gone away so I don't know if my occasional and some times overdone drinking has had any effect on my current re-curring status.  I don't want to miss out on an opportunity to celebrate with friends and family.  Time with friends and family is the most important time spent for me right now.  If I want a shot of tequila, I'm gonna have it.

It is worth noting that some of the chemo drugs can become ineffective with the addition of alcohol. Methotrexate for instance.  So when you start a new drug make sure you know what all the SEs and drug interactions might be.

    Okay, now I want a shot.........love, love......d

I drank very little during chemo...just didn't have the taste for it at all.....plus I already felt a little drunk from all the drugs anyway....

I enjoy a cocktail at the end of a long work day.  I drank no alcohol duirn gchemo - just the thought made me ill.  My perspective is enjoy life fully even if that means including a vodka and club soda when I want!  Breast cancer is a real 'wke up' call and I want to find pleasure every day.  For me that includes regular exercise, eating healthfully and having a drink whenever I want!

In 1997 while working as a psychotherapist at an in-patient chemical dependency treatment for adjudicated boys, a chemical dependency 'expert' told me something interesting about how men and women metabolize alcohol differently.  When men drink the alcohol goes to the liver and is metabolized.  When women drink the alcohol is stored in the fatty tissues and then it goes to the liver sometime later.  What are breasts?  Almost 100% fat.  Hmmm.....  Gives one pause for reflection.

I drink whenever I want to. Smile

Have had both breasts removed, nipples and all and had complete reconstruction. Believe me there is no fatty tissue at all in this area, just scar tissue and tight B cup breasts! I could still get cancer in my chest wall as this is where my first cancer was found but I seriously think that mindset, exercise and food intake has a lot to do with your prognosis. I'm not scared about recurrrence, just blessed that I found my lump when I did, early stage of BC and I did everything possible to give me my life back. Seriously, a few good nights out with the girls is not going to kill me, and I will drink champagne and eat delightful tapas because I've never tasted them before. Yes, a drink or two each night is not going to kill me...rant over, hehe!

Yes, I drink in moderation. I, also, exercise and meditate. I want to live a healthy lifestyle and I want to live a full life, too. Moderation is a glass of red wine while I cook dinner which could be once or twice a week or none. On the weekend we usually go out for dinner once and I have some then, too.

4 years ago this month I finished all my treatment, so far so good. Yes I drink and enjoy it. Drink far less wine but enjoy a gin and tonic. I find wine very acidic these days. Probably have a drink every other day. I really do not think it can harm you and I eat meat, all dairy products and enjoy all food. You have to live this life. I found it very interesting that gals from all over the world with very different diets and alcohol consumption still all had triple negative breast cancer. Is it diet related?

Cruising along here reading this thread and I see Miz Susie- my May Marvel buddy from the May 2009 chemo thread! I haven't been here in a very long time and it's nice to see a friend!

Yes, I drink. In moderation. Everything in moderation. I try to eat healthy and be active. I didn't drink at all during chemo, but I'm four years out almost from my last treatment. I eat meat. I drink dairy. And I enjoy alcohol. And I'm enjoying my life again.

Before my cancer diagnoses, I never drank alcohol, nor did I smoke and that still did not prevent me from getting cancer. And had no family history of the disease either.

I don't drink just because I don't go out much and so i wouldn't enjoy it alone but i do love sugar and cutting out a ritual such as a glass of wine after dinner or sugar in tea would do more harm than good in my opinion. I think little pleasures make our body chemistry happy.

I quit altogether when I was diagnosed last August (2012) and have kept it up. Before diagnosis I had 3-4 week and I think it may have had something to do with it because that was an increase over previous years. Part of why I keep it up is to lose weight....another way to reduce recurrence. I've lost 15 lb. so far with 15 to go...

I have and will continue to cut down a lot - but the odd glass or two with friends to celebrate etc brings enjoyment! Appreciating the moment is what it's all about. So why deny ourselves anything that can bring a little joy, laughter and happiness. God knows we need it!! :-)

Has anyone had 4 drinks in one day? I am going out with friends in a month and I was wondering if I need to stop at 2 or if 4 would be ok?

An article on ScienceDaily said that research indicated that drinking more than 1 drink per day could increase b.c. recurrence by 91%. That is huge. You might want to do a search on that by using that data.

If Alcohol caused breast cancer. Muslim women would not have it and France would have an epidemic ..Neither is true..

It is a serious risk factor as Blue Pearl states above. I gave it up with an very occasional back slide. The extra sugar, calories and all that go with the feeling of intoxication aren't worth it and I do love drinking but I love clear headed, healthy life style more.

This is a bit late, but better late than never.  There's new stuff out there about alcohol and breast cancer.  The first piece of info is about a protein called CYP2E1 [see this website http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120423162245.htm].

The second piece of info comes from The Hutch (Fred Hutchinson Cancer research center in Seattle).  Here, one may have up to 10 drinks per week and people better longevity, while avoiding heart problems.  People who drank before diagnosis fared better than people who didn't.  [see this website http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2020737250_breastcancerxml.html].

The choice is yours, as people here have said, but the statistics are with having 6-10 drinks per week.  Cheers!

Zuzeee - researchers are categorizing TNBC with aggressive ovarian cancer and not considering it a 'breast cancer'.  Weird.  So, here's something to think about regarding diet:  http://www.ted.com/talks/william_li.html.  This doc is still researching various foods, most of them fruits, but he (they?) have come up with something that shrinks tumors out of existence.

So it looks like the 2nd article says it is ok to drink at times? I had a hell of a year with surgery and chemo. I am going out with old college friends in 2 weeks and I have been debating if I should only have my 2 drinks or just let loose and have a couple more? I just feel like I need a night out every once in awhile to let loose. I don't drink any other time and I just want to live my life but not fear a reoccurrence. What are your thoughts?

My thought is that everyone should make their own personal choices that they are comfortable with. My first year or two after treatment I was very careful with food and alcohol. I stuck to no more than about 3 glasses of wine per week. I am less scared of a recurrence now (fingers crossed) and have loosened up in many ways, including drinking when the occasion warrants. For example, I just returned from 2 weeks vacation -- and yes, I drank wine daily and often 3 or 4 glasses in a day, but now I'm back to my usual routine, a couple of glasses on weekend evenings. The guilt and anxiety linger, but I do feel that BC is influenced by so many different factors -- diet, weight and exercise, genes, stress -- and if I can control even half of those, I'll enjoy my glass of wine. Then too, TN is a creature all of its own, not feeding on estrogen... so I'm not sure how well the usual stats apply.
