Do I still need secand opinion.

Options

My mom had chemo  Tac . Then She had mastectomy  . Now the surgeon said they did some one biopsy during surgery and  they come to know there is some muscles  involved. They prefer thoracic surgeon . They thoracic  surgeon said he has to remove  pectoral muscles and also may be remove  three ribs.  The surgeon is one of the top surgeons in VA. There is still cancer so we cant go for radiation . He has to clean that. So , do I still need second opinion. We are confuse . I did lot of search on net but did not find any one who had same my mother situation. Any information will be help full.

Thanks

Given the extensive surgery that is being recommended, I think that a second opinion would be advisable.  Perhaps a different doctor will suggest another option.  Or if the second opinion agrees that this is the only or best option, then your mother can feel more confident that she's doing the right thing by going back for this surgery.

Certainly I would think you also want the opinion of an oncologist (or two) as well as a surgeon.

    Dear zohra,

While you wait for more members to respond, you may want to check out the main breastcancer.org site on information about getting a second opinion.

    We hope this helps.

Get a second opinion if it helps your mother's peace of mine.  However, it is very posssible that you will be told no surgery because of the stage of your mother's BC.  A consideration will be made of the risk/pain of the purposed surgery against any possible benefit on the outcome of the treatment.
