Symptoms of metastasis to spine?
Hi, friends. U am currently on the 5th week of a 6-week break from Femara. One of the reasons I went on the break is that I had developed back pain, along with the usual severe joint pain. The doc and I both figured that my back pain would go away when I stopped Femara, but the back pain is still pretty bad. Today I even took Percocet. I am allergic to anti-inflammatory meds.
I've been getting a massage every week to see if that would help. The masseuse said she can feel a knot near my spine, about mid-back area, and she thinks it is a tight muscle caused by stress. The area she felt was exactly the area that is so painful.
I have an appointment with my oncologist on Oct 9.
Of course, my worry is hat my cancer has spread. What have been your symptoms of metastasis to the spine? Thanks.

I think it is not cancer
most patients who are in Femera or Tamoxifen suffers from back pain as side effect
I think that symptoms of cancer includes change in bowel or urinary habbits and weakness in one or both legs

I seem to be in the same position but I am 5+ years out from BC treatment. Stopped Tamoxifen in Jan and ever since go from one frenzy into the other. First it was the uterus. Large build of of lining and polyp. Worried myself out of 30 pounds of weight. Good thing,I need that. Right after the D&C (nothing malignant there) my back (midback) started to act up. Well I am not one to scream cancer for every hang nail. But now I am worried. I had to get my gall bladder removed and the doc cut into the bile duct because my ALP was elevated. Had my stiches out on Wed and the doc said " I don't have an explanation for that and asked me when I see my Onco again. No, January is too late you have to see him now. If I hadn't been laying on the table I think I would have passed out.
Got an appointment with the Onco the next day and he said that he has to follow up with test, even though my tumor markers are just where they should be. So I am scheduled for a whole body Bone Scan and a CT of Chest, Abdomen and Pelvis.
I am a basket case....because now I think I have Mets. So I can feel your worry.
The best thing we can do is follow what the docs tell us and grab that thing by the horns. We can't change our fate. Easy to say, I know, but like my son said : WE deal with it when we KNOW.

Hi, With bone mets you'll get pain a lot of pain, also tire easier.
i have mets in my spine, aches and pain were first put down to age, and weight and was given painkillers.
Pain got worse until I told the doctor on the scale of 1-10 it was 15 and rising. I was given stronger painkillers .
Pain got worse and my mobility was affected - I was loosing feeling in the soles of my feet and the right leg had developed a mind of its own. It jumped, kicked or just stopped wrking.
Doc now thought trapped nerve and asked a neuron specialist to see me.
Two days later I'm in A&E as I can hardly stand and keep falling down.
To cut a long story short by day 3 - I'm paralised from the chest down, bowels and blader no longer working.
That was the beginning of June- today my insides are working fine and I can walk with one stick, plus I get a little better all the time.
So Loo out for bone pain, tiredness and if its your back mobility problems. If you can ask your doctor for CT scan not all cancers show up on x rays.
please remember there are lots of good treatments out there for bone mets -plus pain relieve meds.
Hope you turn out to have nothing major wrong with you both.
Best wishes harvey

We obviously can't diagnose your situation, but I must say I'm very glad that you are getting scans now. If it's just stress related pain, you'll find out. Make sure that they take an MRI of the spine and/or a bone scan, not just CT.
I went to a masseuse also, and he told me that my spine bent a bit- thought it was scoliosis. Turns out, it was swelling and pressure from a tumor.
MY biggest mistake was not being proactive enough. When the nurse practicioner pooh poohed my back pain, I wanted to believe it was nothing and stayed in denial. I should have INSISTED on a scan. My mets probably would have been diagnosed at least a year earlier, and I wouldn't have had the immobility issues I suffered. Please don't let the docs tell you to "wait and see." Knowing early can make a big difference in your quality of life.
Good luck.

thankful, I had what sounds like a similar experience about 6 months ago. I'd also gone for a massage because I was feeling especially achy, and the therapist could feel a lump exactly where I had lower back pain. The pain was so bad when she pushed on that area, I literally yelled out. Anyway, she said she thought it was lactic acid buid up, and since I'd recently started working with a trainer that sort of made sense and I let her work on breaking it up. Well after the massage, my pain was even worse than it had been, and I was convinced that it was a met and I felt certain that she'd disrupted it and spread it. The serious pain lasted for a week and a half, and right around the time I was resigning myself to get it checked, it started to ebb and eventually went away completely and never came back.
I know how scary it is when you have a discernable lump and pain, but I'm wondering if you might have the same thing I had? I hope yours turns out to be either that or something equally B9! Please keep us posted! Deanna

Thankful-I had a lot of back/hip pain for the 6 weeks I was on aromasin. Doc switched me to tamoxifen, then I had major hotflashes so he had me stop that. It seems my pain is still there also. It is bad in the morning and then as I move around more it goes away, not even noticeable during the day. I had a ct scan, but my insurance is being a pain and denied both a pet/ct and bone scan. Does a ct show anything to do with the spine? I know I should call my doc and ask, but I just want a break from appointments for a few weeks! Do bone mets stop hurting sometimes? I have had lower back pain off and on since I was 19, and sometimes it was so bad I couldn't walk for a couple of days, but it hasn't been like that now, just hurts in the morning when i wake up.

Thanks for all the responses. I will be seeing my oncologist on the 9th, and at that point I guess she will order tests. Will keep you updated.

thankful, I wish you the best of luck. I hope you will post your findings after your appointment. Sandra

Sherry, I was just dx with bone nets. It started with back pain. I went to my chyropactor for an adjustment. It helped for a short time but then I noticed my right leg kept giving out. After falling three times I went to see an orthodox Dr. He said I had ostioarthritis in the knee and we did uflexia shots. It didn't help. So I saw a pain management Dr who did an MRI of the spine. All they saw was mild spinal stenosis. All the while my leg was getting weaker and weaker. Then on labor day, I thought I pulled my thigh muscle. It hurt so bad. I went from walking with a Cain to walking with crutches to not being able to walk at all, in a matter of weeks. All the while I was having pt twice a week. The one day, I took a step that landed my full weight on my right leg. I heard something pop. I broke my femur. Well long story short, the found a tumor eating away at the bone. The a pet scan showed spots on my coxes and two nodes in my chest. I still don't understand why the spine MRI Didn't show something......but it really doesn't matter now. I have never had any trouble with bowels or such. Just leg weakness.
I guess the lesson is, everyone is different. Trust you instincts and don't. Stop yelling till you get answers. Its your life.

My doc just called. Bone scan yesterday showed NO metastisis to the spine. She said my pain is musculoskeletal. I am so thankful.

fYeah!!!! Congrats!! I too have back pain a lot. I think the tamoxofin targets weak areas, I was in a car accident like 20 years ago and hurt my back and shoulder. I think the tammy really makes that ache.

My doc just ordered a PET scan for me today due to lower back pain. To say I'm a wreck is an undertstatement. I also have increased dizziness. I guess if I'm not meant to stay on this spinning ball as long as I'd hoped, it is what it is.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm a mess lately. I had a bone scan done and they found a spot on my spine. My back has been hurting in the same spot for over a month. Now I need an mri and a pet scan to make sure its not anywhere else. I'm 33, I have two kids. I'm so tired of this disease!!
-
My doctor always orders an x-ray first, has not moved on to a PET scan. I'm not having any pains right now but does anyone else's doctor start with the x-ray? He always explains the x-ray won't be completely definitive but will provide info on whether to move on to more tests.
-
He did order an xray first, he said normally insurance won't cover a bone scan until an xray is done.
-
BethCon1...When you say that you have the same spot hurting on your spine for over a month, how does it hurt? On it's own or when you touch it or both? I'm curious because I have something similar going on and have been debating whether I should have it checked out or not. I'm 33, also.

Here's my story...
I had breast cancer 3 years ago. I was down to onc appointments every 3 months. Anyway about a year and a half ago I started having a lot of pain in my back that shot down my thigh like a burning stabbing pain. It got so bad that I went to the ER and the doctor did a quick exam and told me it was siatica. He told me the pain would come and go and gave me muscle relaxers and sent me home. For a year the pain would come and go, but getting more frequent over time. I just assumed it was the siactica. When the pain started going down the other leg I became concerned. When meeting with my ONC she also was concerned and ordered an xray of my spine. It came back with a tumor on one of my lower vertebrae that was pressing on my spinal cord which was causing my symptoms. She than order a full body scan. MRI and CT scans of chest and abdomen. I saw a radiologist and after 10 rounds of radiation the pain was greatly relieved. He said if the tumor grew any bigger I could have been paralyzed. I was so angry at the ER doctor cause he should have ordered a simple Xray and the tumor would have been found a year earlier. I learned that anybody who had breast cancer previously and have bone or back pain should be checked for tumors since bc, if it recurs, often does so in the bones. My chart history clearly showed I had bc and was still taking tamoxifen. So please don't ignore any ache or weakness, go to your doctor and demand at least an xray of the area. Most doctors won't order more expensive tests until you have an xray to determine if there is an area needed further inspection.
-
aaoaao, I would have been furious at that ER doctor!! margodae, My pain was constant, like a dull ache that got sharper if I bent a certain way. I could feel it in my thigh if I sat down too long. It didn't really hurt to the touch unless you really pressed on it. I went to my family doctor first and because of bc history he immediatley ordered an xray, which came back fine (he figured it would, but said insurance usually won't cover a bone scan without doing an xray first) and then he ordered a bone scan. My doctor showed me the otehr day what my vertabra looks like, he said he doesn't know how I can function without taking pain meds. He showed me what a normal vertabrae looks like, then he showed me my L4. It is fractured and just completely wrecked. I start radiation tomorrow to help with the pain and they gave me a fentanyl patch which helps.
