Fall 2013 Rads
I kept waiting for someone to start a Fall Rads group - but no one has so I guess I'll do it! I am scheduled to start IMRT on 9/16. Looking for a group of sisters to support each other during our Rads this fall. Who else is starting radiation soon / anticipating having radiation this fall?

Thank you for starting this thread. I kept looking for one but could not find it. I had lumpectomy on the 3rd and the plan is for me to start Rads on 9/26 if things work out the way my surgeon expects them to. I should find out my pathology findings on the 10th or around the 10th.
Would like to work with you and others to have Rads support and provide support for each other this Fall. -
Hello and thanks for the thread. I had my first rad treatment yesterday, 9/5. I have 27 more treatments followed by 6 boosts. My radiation is in the prone position at my request and the rad onc was fine with that. First treatment was easy. Dr only allows aquaphor, so I am slathering it on after the treatment and at bedtime. Drinking lots of water and walking every morning for about 45 minutes. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Fall girls!
For you, and all who join you throughout the season, here's some helpful info on the main Breastcancer.org site on Radiation Therapy, including types of radiation therapy, what to expect, and how to manage side effects. You may also find it helpful to read the Summer 2013 Radiation thread, for more tips and tricks from others who've been there!
Hope this helps!

ULX yesterday and expect rads end of the month or early October so glad to see this thread start. Reading the surgery thread really did help me and overall I've had a easy time of it.
I have very dry skin. Should I star lathering up prior to rad?
Thanks -
I will be starting after my TE are filled. Likely Oct. Would love to share info and encourage one another.
-
Walking - our diagnosis / treatment are so similar! So glad to see someone else who didn't start rads "right away" after surgery. I was worried about waiting to start, but my RO seemed okay with me waiting until my kids were back in school.
I had to have my right TE drained because it was in the way (ha!), so I'm a little lopsided right now. Fiddledee - I don't know but hopefully a veteran will stop by and impart her wisdom. I would think, though, that our skin being in good shape before would be a good thing. Eating well, staying hydrated, making sure we're getting enough fat, protein, and sleep to support healthy skin are important, too.
Welcome everyone!

Hello all.
Fiddledeedee....whan I suggested that I should start slathering before rads, I received raised eyebrows....so while I don't think that the medical profession thinks handling dry skin before rads is helpful, I absolutely don't think it would hurt. I started slathering about 2 weeks ago. If it doesn't help, I will never know that.
Had second treatment today. I bought these awesome Playtex bras at Target that look like the Genie Bra on TV. They have three hooks in the back and no underwire. Very soft like a sports bra but provide good separation so you don't have a uniboob! And they have a wide, soft underband. After my treatment, I am using J&J Gauze pads to put between the ooy gooy aquaphor and the bra and kind of soaking the guaze pad with the goo...hoping it will hold the goo in place and protect my clothing. So far so good. I want to work through treatment, so trying to take very good care of my skin. Definitely need to be able to wear a bra for work.
I'm not sure if this will help anyone following later...we are all different.

MsPharoah....
Thanks so much. I plan/hope to be able to work also. I have'nt been a sweater girl for some time but still don't like the uniboob look. I bought some soft no under wire bras prior but will look for the plated ones too. Like to have more than 1 choice. Haven't though about the goo factor ;-). Thanks for the heads up

I was just looking to see if anyone had started a Fall group and here you are. I go next week for the planning and then I should be starting the following week.
-
I have one more cycle of chemo and then will start rads sometime in October. I'll probably be lurking for awhile until I start. I look forward to learning from all of you.
-
Hello Ladies,
Count me in! I had my tattoos and simulation last week and start my 33 rads this coming week. Just so thrilled chemo is over!
MsPharoah - I'm with you...am already slathering on the aquaphor. Need softer bras though so will checkout the Playtex ones at Target.
Looking forward to going through this last big treatment stage with everyone.

Welcome Annie, TwoHobbies and JeriGrace.
I think I may be overdoing the aquaphor because after only 2 treatments, I've used about 1/4 of a tub. Lol. It will be a small price to pay to make sure my skin holds up. My dr told me that aquaphor is the only thing he wants me to put on my skin....but that I need to drink lots of fluids, exercise and eat a well balanced diet, because that is just as important to skin health.
Tomorrow is treatment 3. So far, so good.

Hi Ladies: I am 6/30 treatments. Treatments are ok, but I am so tired already. I am using miaderm (easier to spread), MyGirls cream (amazon), which is so soft and easily absorbed by skin and Fruit of the Earth aloe (no alcohol) after the treatment. Aquafor is too dense and difficult to spread...Also difficult to cover all areas. My only complaint is between the driving, stress of work schedule together with treatment requires daily naps. Try to conserve your energy! Welcome to all.....we will get through this together!

Thanks for the thread. I have my last treatment Oct. 1 and will be starting rads shortly after that. My concern is that I have tissue expanders . I would like to hear from others that have TE. My plastic surgeon said that he may have to fill the side that is radiated more because the skin will likely tighten.
-
Sharon- I will have radiation after TE are filled. I heard they sometimes overfill the rads side too.
A friend who is a rad tech said to use Fruit of the Earth aloe and to start even before rads. And lots of water. Think I will use Miaderm too. -
Hi ladies. Glad to see a group started. I'm terrified of rads. Not sure exactly when I'll be starting. I went for my simulation a week and a half ago and they wouldn't let me because I was not healed enough from surgery. I've since gotten an infection and not much more healing. The bs already made me push new chemo out another week. I will be doing this course concurrent with rads. Will attempt the simulation again this Wednesday.
I'm really concerned about my skin. I am very fair, sensitive to everything an already have rosacea on my chest. Add to that that I probably won't be healed completely before I start and I'm a nervous wreck. The nurse at RO suggested starting now with a cream called Remedy, but I have not been able to with the open wounds. I hope all of you have an easy time and look forward to seeing your experiences. -
Hello BC Ladies,
I have my last TCH chemo 9/13 and begin RT mid October. IMRT hypofractionation. 15 treatments to the whole breast and 5 boost treatments. Seems this is the only time small breasts may be an advantage. I've convinced myself that RT will be a walk in the park compared to crappy chemo. I still have 12 more Herceptin to go but am looking forward to the end of Taxotere and Carboplatin. Best to you all and thanks for starting this group!

Hi ladies,
I have a re-excision scheduled for Sept11th but bs said this should not delay the start of radiation unless they can't get clear margins again. Meet with RO on Sept 17th for the first time. I'm very fair skinned so not looking forward to this. Good luck everyone....here we go! -
Hi ladies,
I am about to go to my 8th treatment today. I'm very sensitive to all drugs - fair skinned, etc.
And so far so good, my breast is slightly pink and a bit sore but it's not stopping me at all. I'm starting to feel slightly fatigued, sort of like i didn't get enough sleep, even though i got plenty. But again, nothing too bad as of yet.
My biggest challenge is fitting these radiation visits into my day - i work FT and have 2 kids - and that's my biggest hurdle so far. Using Miaderm religiously, using mild dove cleanser, not shaving, and trying to eat well.
I wish you all the best!
-
Welcome Delirium, Gracers, Jo and ealga..... From my reading, the fairness of your skin is NOT an indication that you will have more skin problems than others. So hopefully you will find that to be the case. Ealga, sounds like you are way ahead of us and can give us some pointers. I had treatment 3 today, slathered on the Aquaphor and I am at work. LiliRI, you are right...aquaphor is dense and difficult to spread. I am using a cosmetic sponge and it works great and ensures a nice thick layer of protection. I also take baby wipes with me in my rad bag to wipe the excess goo off my hands so I don't stain my clothing. I am using Aveeno unscented body wash.
Ealga, I hear you with the daily treatments...I think that is going to get old...fast. I don't have children at home. I often think about my BC sisters who are trying to navigate through BC treatment, work full time AND raise children. You are truly amazing!!!!
-
Hi everyone - My mother started today with her dry run and rads begin tomorrow. I think she is getting 35 treatments, not totally sure. I know they are adding two extra.
I am the driver for the treatments; today she was in and out so fast. Hope all the treatments are quick. Good luck to you all.

Hi all. I start radiation Oct 1. Simulation on Sept 26. I will be going twice per day for 4 1/2 weeks. It wil be pretty aggressive for IBC. I'm in St. Louis but will be traveling to Houston at MDA for the treatment. I'm a stay at home mom. My daughters are 9 and 12 and hubs will be home with them. They are prepared for me to be gone 5-6 weeks. Oh, I have another PET scan scheduled the same day as simulation because I didn't respond well to chemo. But the scans before didn't show all the cancer that was still remaining anyway! I'm reeeeeeally hoping rads keeps me from advancing to Stage IV.
I'm going into this feeling pretty crappy! I had surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago and I still have one drain. The incision seems well healed but I seem to be pretty juicy. I just hope I don't develop a big seroma, which I've done in the past. My surgical team does not want the drain in longer than 3 weeks.
You can see in my signature I've had a bit of treatment already. Rads on the other side ended this past January. I did OK with it. I am fair and have avoided the sun all my life. My local RO's nurse says the skin never forgets the sun. She said ladies who have less sun damaged skin fair better with rads. Age doesn't make a difference. This was just her personal observation based on about 30 years experience. I used aloe vera gel and a holistic healing balm. i need to hunt down some more of the balm. I got sleepy from rads. It had been over a year since chemo ended and a few months after a surgery. Now I'm going into this course of rads after rads/chemo/surgery. This is why I feel crappy. Enough already!
This thread will be a great support. -
Dobby, most rad appointments are over very quickly; no more than 20-30 minutes total from car back to car. Usually, once a week the RO will see your mom right after she is nuked.
Where I went for my rads -- I finished in late-July -- many of the early morning appointment patients came in in their pajamas and slippers. Easy to slip off a pajama top and then slip back into it a few minutes later.
Sending best wishes that your mom does well. I never had nausea nor fatigue from my rads (28+5 boosts). My skin never broke down either. I think there is much to admire about the resistance of us tough old birds (I'm in my mid-60s).

Start rads tomorrow morning. I have to have 30. I have bought ALL kinds of creams, oils, etc. I plan on "greasing" up a lot and often. Dr. says 3 1/2 - 4 weeks the tiredness and redness will probably start. I have to think (hope) that this will be easier then chemo. Only time will tell! I read a lot, I figure the more informed I am the better. I am thinking about reconstruction. Can't really get a straight answer as to how long I should wait. Thinking about DIEP in NOLA. Anyway, here we go. I know God won't give me anything that I can't handle.
All of my best to all,
Shawn

Hi ladies, first post on this site. I will be starting RADs second week of October. Doctor is letting me take my grandbaby to Disney before beginning. My SIL went through this in the Spring and had no complications, but I am concerned as I have asthma. I want very much to get back to exercise.
-
Greetings ladies. I had #15 of 33 today. So far not too bad, just some mild discomfort and skin just a little pink. My RO recommended Lindi skin products. I've been using the body wash, lotion, and cooling pad. She also said aquaphor and miaderm are good. I had been following another thread "did anyone make it through rads with their skin ok" and learned about emu oil. So my routine is to use nothing after my shower in the morning as my treatment is @ 8 before I go to work. I'm usually done by 815. I use miaderm or lindi skin cream (aquaphor is too messy). When I get home from work I'll slather on the aquaphor. After I shower at night I use emu oil. I really think the emu oil is helping keep my skin moisturized. Also the cooling pad, which I just started using this weekend, gave me instant relief when my skin was feeling a bit itchy and irritated. I so can't wait to be done with this.
-
Cider8-I'm sorry that you've been through so much and I'm believing with you that rads will work. That's awesome that your going to Houston. I've heard nothing but good things about MDA.
-
Shawn, the NOLA docs will tell you they can do DIEP 4-6 months after rads. It wouldn't hurt to get the ball rolling now. Delayed recon can take a little longer to schedule vs active cancer patients. I HIGHLY recommend going to NOLA!
-
Cider8,
I have a surgery date set in NOLA for Dec 18th. They are saying a 2 month wait is enough but ONC says 6-12 months. Have you had anything done ther? First rad in a few hours. Ready to get started so I can finish!
