10 Years of Tamoxifen for DCIS?

I recently had my five year check up with my rad onc. At that time I completed my five years of tamoxifen. I was diagnosed stage 0 4 mm in 2008 at age 46. He told me that two new trials came out (aTTOM and ATLAS) that confer benefits to continue tamoxifen for 5 more years and to see a med onc.

I looked at the trials and they don't address DCIS. I was wondering what other people are hearing from their doctors about this.

As you noted, these studies do not include DCIS and the balance of benefits and risks may be different. My med onc said that 5 years would still be the limit for me.

my med onc said 5 years tamoxifen for me until there are studies which support increasing the number of years specifically for   DCIS.

My MO hasn't said anything about how long I'll be on it ... he is just prescribing 6 months at a time.   I think he feels there's a good chance that I'll go into menopause and need to be switched during the next 5 years anyway (I doubt it though - if I am like my mom, I have another 10 years 'til menopause).

I talked to a med onc who told me there is no benefit for more tamoxifen beyond 5 years in DCIS. She told me to come see her after I' m through with menopause to discuss aromatase inhibitors for prevention.

I brought the article to my MO and got the same response- those studies do boy include women with DCIS. So just 5 years for me. 2 down, 3 to go.

When I was done with my five years I asked my Oncologist and she said since my mammograms were clear there was no reason to take Tamoxefin for another five. I am kind of concerned if the medical community says there is benefit from another five years even the mammograms were clear. I don't like the fact I should take Tamoxefin only when I have the cancer. The first five was preventive because my dx was stage 0. So why not?
