I am looking to switch my medical oncologist.  I went to private oncogolist but would like to switch over MSKCC.  I had an agressive form of tumor er/pr negative Her2 positive and it felt it grew pretty quickly.  was shocked initially and didn't have much chance to shop around.  I had an average experience with my oncologist and I'm looking to switch over to big place with more research experience.

Can anybody recommend a really competent medical oncologist at MSKCC in NYC or New Jersey (Basking Ridge) for Breast Cancer in women 40 and under.

I finished Chemo, Surgery, and Radiation.  Still need to go for Herception infusion every 3 weeks for 6 months.

I use Maura Dickler, MD. I can't comment on how she treats aggressive tumors, but those are the bread and butter cases of MSK so I'm sure she's fine. Maybe one of her other patients will respond.

Sophie, I'm with Mary Ellen Moynahan at the MSK Lauder Breast Center in Manhattan. A link to her page on the hospital's website is here: https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/doctors/mary-ell...

The page includes a link to her articles on pubmed, which will show that she is listed as one of the co-authors on the Cleopatra study, proving the effectiveness of Perjeta, as well as other studies that involved HER+ cancers. So I feel confident that she's up on the latest research for this particular cancer.

I will be honest and say that her manner can be a little brusque, but it has become clear over time that she really does care very much about her patients on a personal level. But you have to be ready to tell her when you need her to slow down and explain things; I made the mistake early on of being easily intimidated and left her visits with unanswered questions, but I know that I'm getting a high standard of care and am more ready to speak my mind when I need to.

If you have more questions, send me a PM.

A more general answer to this question....

I don't know how it works with patients who come to MSK asking for a specific doctor, but in my case, I did not and was matched to this particular doctor as well as to a BS. At the time, I thought it was a bit random, but since my biopsy had already been done and the cancer was proven to be something that this MO specializes in, I wonder if they do match the doctors to patients by cancer type if there is a specialty of some sort.

I don't know the answer to that question, but it's something to ask about when you're asking to see a particular doctor in a large practice or hospital, whether they have any specialty in your specific form of the disease. (Not that I was capable of asking that question at the start; I knew nothing!)
