Stitching the pieces together

I finally have this piture thing down.  Here is the quilt I made for my friend/should have been sister for her birthday.  It was one of the first ones I did when I started quilting again after being away from sewing for almost 30 years!

Thanks Chrissy.  All the fabrics were in one collection from Moda and I love them all so I tried to use some of each of the pieces from the whole collection.  It sure made blending and matching colors easier! 

OK.  I have a question for all you quilty people.  Is it really imperative to have a rolling cutter when quilting, or can you get by using scissors?

Garden Gumby, You can get by with regular scissors but it is easier with the rotary cutter to cut strips. Early quilt patterns were all made with cardboard templates and cut out with scissors, but most of the quilt patterns today are written using the rotary cutter.

My grandmother made most of her quilts using plastic (milk jug) templates, mechanical pencil to mark and her sharp scissors.  She had a rotary cutter in later years but didn't use it that much. Of course, some of the fabrics she used in the 80's were cutting room scraps she got from a local shirt manufacturer and she used her plastic templates to mark the shape on the fabric and used her scissors to cut out the pieces. The quilt I got from her when I got married 17 years ago (she dated it made in 1984) is a maple leaf pattern made from the scraps, and it is all made with half-square triangles and no squares because the pieces were not big enough for the 3 1/2 inch squares but big enough for half-square triangles. I also have the baby quilt she made for my son (out of the same fabric as the maple leaf quilt) in 1985.  She stopped major quilting by the mid 90's when her eyesight was failing and she went in the nursing home.

Well girls my little fingers have been busy as you know so I thought I would share with you a very unfinished look at the bare bones of my crocheted top for the wedding......or it will be once I'm done......lol.

The green underneath is the colour of the fabris that I will make the skirt and top to go under the crocheted bit.

Mel, KEEP your first quilt. You HAVE to. It`s a quilt rule (did we tell you?)

I made my first quilts without a rotary cutter as I do and did, wall quilts! Cutters are worth every penny though! Don`t buy the biggest one if you are only going to buy one. Buy either medium or small as they are easier to control.
