Exercise - Working Back to it After or During Treatment

tarheel, i agree with newchallenge. that's incredible that you can run 2 miles.
and newchallenge, you are rocking it with all you can do. during and after chemo, i struggled to walk to my subway stop, but i would force myself. luckily i can walk fairly easily now. i don't run because i am very protective of my knees.
i haven't been doing extra walking in the last few days because, after a year and a half, i got my period again, and it's a gusher. guess when you build up all that lining. i called my oncologist this morning because the amount was scaring me. the nurse practictioner, who i call hitler in heels, merely replied that i had hardy ovaries. i told her i didn't need those ovaries. her other response was that if i was still bleeding next week, to call them. gee, thanks. so i've been chilling lately.
i could use a break from the shocks. ya know?
-
Gritgirl I'm so sorry! Former gusher myself. I don't trust your nurse practitioner. I've been down that road ... called my ob/gyn to complain about excessive bleeding, got a pat on the head, and told to run along. Fast forward to a week later when I almost pass out from blood loss and needed an emergency D&C. I'm not suggesting that's what's happening to you, but if you are worried by the amount of blood, can't someone on your medical team reassure you, rather than giving you useless information? Hope the river runs dry and you feel more like yourself soon. You definitely deserve an "excused absence" from exercise.
-
Ronda, I already told her that if it keeps gushing for another day, I'll be going in. It seems to be not gushing now but I'm nervously checking things out every hour or so. I'm hoping this stops soon too. :-(
-
Hi gritgirl
Hope things are better for you now. There is no way you can exercise please take it easy. I was also a real gusher it was great to leave all that behind . One advantage of getting older.
Back to exercise or rather lack of it. I did manage a slow walk along the canal. ( Not sure do you have a canal system overthere) it's very flat and very easy. it is wonderfully therapeutic to walk along side water. My DD and grandson arrive this week so my exercise is set out already for this week.
Take care
Mara

Helloooo. How is everybody? Gritgirl, you OK? Are things getting back to normal. Mara, has your family arrived?
I had all of you strong ladies on my mind as I slow jogged 1.5 miles today. The weather was perfect. My lungs were not. My route takes me by an old cemetery which definitely keeps me moving. Lol. I've jogged/walked 14 miles this month. I was ready to stop about every 50 feet, but I thought someone needed to post some exercise here. Anyone else felt up to it? -
I did my mile walk at lunch again yesterday. And then in the afternoon my knee started acting up for no aparent reason...kept buckling on me and then last night the pain was excutiating. This morning it is still and sore, but not so bad. Guess I better take it easy today......
Ronda, good for you on your run yesterday!
-
Go Ronda, go Ronda. You're doing great. Keep up the good work.
I had my last chemo and it was not kind to me. Fever and exhausted and so weak my legs gave out and I fell. So I'm waiting for this to pass and then I'm going to work my way up to some kind of normal. -
Rhody: So sorry about the knees. Take it easy. They're more important than boobs. :-)Mara, a canal walk is lovely. Depends on the area as to canals. We have canals around here and they are wonderful to walk along.
Ronda, things are no longer gushing. I have an appointment with a gynecologist tomorrow. Talking to my counselor, we talked about me asking to have the nurse practitioner (aka Hitler in Heels) taken out of this process. Frankly, she's more upsetting than helpful. She means well. I'm hoping I'm at a point where I can see doctors less, so can easily move her out of the picture. But I'm knocking on wood on that. Woke up this morning with a sore sternum. Of course in my mind that is cancer. Oy.
Doing basic walking and no more. :-)
-
Tarheel ..Wow I do admire your determination on these runs my slow walks are just enough. The family has arrived I am already tired although we have had lots of fun.
Gritgirl I have travelled a lot in the states but not so much on the East coast just New York never encountered canals so it's great to know you know how relaxing these walks can be.
Love the description of the insensitive nurse.
Mara -
Gritgirl, you are so right that knees are more important than boobs! You don't walk on boobs.....home from work now with ice and ibuprofen!
-
hugs to all you strong ladies. Sending a strong drink and a pain pill to Rhody and her necessary knees, and to Gritgirl and her sore sternum.
Ran some errands today hoping the fresh air and sunshine would do me some good, but instead felt sad as I watched clumps of my hair fly out the window. (severe hair loss on Tamox). Going to try and do a 1-mile run tomorrow and see if that helps my mood. Only been on Tamox a month. Had to postpone my reconstruction surgery next week because of some fast-growing skin mets on the other side. It's one of those "bed covers over the head" days. It really inspires me to hear what everyone is doing, so keep posting, everybody.
-
may I join back in?
signed up for a half marathon in nov. everybody at work runs...so... signed up too. what the hell. allready decided I am walking it. turns out I have bakers cyst behind knee. running makes it worse. feels okay now. also seem fast walking makes my left hip hurt. did three miles sunday. and was in agony monday. hip hurt so bad. motrin today and took it easy, feeling better. its always something.
-
Welcome Fran, glad to meet you. A half marathon is a huge undertaking and I salute you. Have you been running before? Training with a mentor/plan is essential. If you have not been exercising regularly, even walking 13 miles can cause damage if you didn't give enough time to training. Please be careful! My husband is training for the NYC marathon, his first, and I've watched him slowly build his way up. I am learning from him. I am new to running. Yoga is a great companion workout to running, especially for people who sit at a desk all day. Good luck to you. Hope your knee feels better soon.
-
Ronda: I'm with you on the bed covers over the head thing. Some days I'm just like that.
Had an appointment with a gynecologist. She's scheduling me for a uterine biopsy soon. Tells me not to worry much about it, it's more just to be sure there's no problem. Frankly, compared to everything else, this is just a blip on my screen.
It's been hot around here again. Today is cloudy and a bit rainy, so feels a bit cooler. At least I'll get outside to do some weeding, if not walking the dogs. I'll commit to that. :-)
I need to get back to yoga, but can't seem to motivate myself to go to a class. Anyone want to come to DC with a cattle prod to inspire me? Mara? That might be a nice trip for you. :-)
-
Grit girl I had a uterine biopsy. No big deal amongst the sh@t we've already done. A lot of the cancer centers have gentle yoga classes. Maybe that is a place to start.
Ronda i thought i had a lot of hair loss too on tamoxifen but couldn't see it reduced on my head overall. Just a lot on my bathroom floor and on the chairs. It was upsetting. Now being bald i dont have to vacuum as much. That's my version of positive thinking.
The only exercise I'm going to make today is doing laundry and watering my garden. Getting slightly more energy but its really hot here. -
I know i know. Am def not running. The hip thing just reared its ugly head. Am training with work people, they run though. Cant find any walkers to train with
-
fredntan - your hip pain may actually be related to your quadriceps. The quads meet at the top in the hip, so sometimes what seems like hip pain is really leg pain. Is the pain at the front of the hip, or on the side? Had you been walking 3 miles already, or was that a new and farther distance? Man, I am nosy, right?
-
It kinda feels like sciatica. It runs down that left sciatica. So its at back of hip. I have been doing three miles for long time. Just not almost everyday. I could do almost three while i was in chemo. It feels almost all better today. I last walked on sunday. Havnt had any motrin today. I dont have to give you copay specialk?
Maybe i should get that roller out and try and work those kinks out -
fredntan - I will leave the co-pay up to you, lol! Do you have any back pain - weirdly, I had sciatic pain at about the same time as a degenerative L4/5 diagnosis, then bought a new car with a more adjustable front seat and the sciatic pain went away, almost overnight! Are you done at Sibley? I went for my first booster in July and got to meet gritgirl!
-
Back did hurt few months ago. Think it was related to pilates and my weak post diep abs.
I go to sibley in oct 3 xs.
Want to meet up gritgirl? Lunch?
Just walked a few blocks am not in agony but def notright. Am giving it the two week test. Will make ortho appt i guess tomorrow. I hate doctors -
fredntan - try some anti-inflammatory and some heat.
-
Hi everyone,
I have been off the boards between getting my youngest DD off to her first year of college and starting back to my new school year. I have not fit in much exercise but am adding steps everywhere I can. Parking farther away, etc. -
Off to wedding land! Tarheel, I am heading to Tarheel country today.....to Charlotte overnight to stay at my daughter's (and watch the Steelers play the Panthers), then off to Charleston tomorrow. Knee feels a little better, I found an old brace that seems to help (still sore but at least it's not caving in on me). Had another seroma drained yesterday (only 150cc this time--but that was 6 days worth). Have another appointment to get drained next Thursday after we get back in anticipation of chemo on Friday. But for now, WEDDING CENTRAL! And time with family that we don't see very often (like only at weddings, funerals, and family emergencies). Wishing everyone a great day!
-
sounds like everyone is getting exercise in where they can.
twohobbies, thanks for the words of comfort. i'm actually having this done under conscious sedation. long story, but it's an experience i don't want to be awake for. plus, i get to meet my little friend propifol again. :-)
i was actually inspired last night and got out and walked the dogs. they sure were happy and it helped me to loosen up. now if i could get myself to yoga. :-)
-
Fredntan I had good luck with a massage therapist and then she recommended the foam roller. I suffered for two weeks with radiating shoulder pain and one massage and two days of foam roller and it was gone.
Rhody enjoy the wedding. I love Charleston and its a beautiful place for a wedding.
I am going out to walk my dog in about a half hour to beat the heat and while I have energy, but after my allergy medicine kicks in. It takes a lot of planning these days. -
I have been helping my mom clear out her house for the last month or so, so my "exercise" has been boxes, boxes and more boxes, plus cleaning out cabinets and helping unpack at the new place. I had my bike refurbished months ago and found the box with my cable lock this AM. Tomorrow phone installers are coming to put in a couple of new jacks, because the only one in the house when I bought it was dead. But after they finish maybe I will ride to church (to see how long it takes) or the library. Wish I could remember where I packed my helmet.
-
Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday weekend, especially to the mother of the bride, Rhody. A Charleston wedding, how exciting! Hope you are looking and feeling especially splendid on Saturday. Post a pic if you can when you are able.
I didn't get any exercise in today, I have a 6-hr drive tomorrow, and didn't want to run tonight and be exhausted tomorrow (any travel makes my bones hurt worse than usual). I'll be with my son (15) and stepson (9) this weekend and want to be as energetic as I can with them.
Gritgirl, when is your biopsy? Even if it's just a blip, it's still something that you'd rather not be doing, right? So I'm sending positive thoughts your way, and hoping that you won't remember an unpleasant thing.
Congrats to everyone who did something today to strengthen their bodies, or even just thanking your body for hanging in there.
-
Rhody- have a great time at the wedding! I was in Charleston a few weeks ago and it is a lovely city. Safe travels!
-
Hi gritgirl
I wish I could take you up on your suggestion to visit you. I wouldn't bring the cattle prod but just like to be there and give you some support and hugs.
Family have gone now so today is a recovery day. I will Hoover and dust and that's my exercise for the day.
Tar Heel take care of those precious bones but enjoy the trip.
Curveball good to see you back enjoy your cycling.
