Port vs using veins if icing

I'm new and have been reading the forums but haven't seen an answer to this. In preparing my questions for the oncologist, I want to ask if I can ice my nails during treatment. I have excellent veins (really! I get told that all the time by nurses) and I was hoping to be able to use my veins instead of a port. I have tissue expanders that are very high and uncomfortable, and I hate the idea of sticking something else in there. Would the icing interfere with the iv in the hand? Has anyone iced with an iv?

You may want to find out from your onco what chemo regimen you are on and the frequency that the chemo will be administered.  That will determine whether your onco is recommending a port or a PICC line or if your own veins will be used.  You may want to ask your onco if a PICC line can be installed a little higher up your arm so it won't interfere with the icing.

I iced during all 5 rounds of my Cytoxan/Taxotere chemo regimen and had minimal nail damage. Wishing you the best.  Keep us posted.
