Options

My father is a prostate cancer survivor (10 yr survivor) and I am a breast cancer survivor. Are these cancers linked?

Yes, especially in families with BRCA mutations. Have you had genetic counseling?

I am negative for the BRCA gene. I was tested because of my diagnosis age (40).  My dad did not get tested. Back when I was tested we discussed having my sister (1 1/2 yrs older) and my brother (6yrs older) tested for the mutation. My dad declined because I was negative. At $3500 each test.... and neither one of my siblings insurance will cover it.

Is there some type of research or study that we can paricipate? Curiosity??

They just knew I had a different genetic syndrome because my dad's mom & sister had colon cancer & I had ovarian cancer, but I tested negative for everything.

Here's a way to search for trials:

I am currently waiting on my results from 23AndMe. They will be looking for changes on other genes in addition to BRCA that may be related to familial cancer. They do not look as extensively at BRCA as the lab that runs the test for breast cancer patients. I had that test and it came back negative, but I was also told ahead of time that I could request a further test for them to read the gene more extensively if my family history had warranted. Check out the 23andMe website for more info.
