My doctor says its mastitis but I think IBC
Just over a week ago I began to feel unwell, feverish and achy and my lymph nodes under both armpits were tender. Over the next few days I noticed an intense burning sensation in my left breast and tenderness radiating from my armpit towards the nipple. The whole breast felt hot to touch and noticeably more swollen than the right. No discharge (still none) or rash at this time. I have lumpy fibrous breasts anyway which have been painful in the past and have had this checked out before with Mammogram and US but all ok. I googled my symptoms and immediately got back IBC. Then the rash came, a vivid red slash aross the inside of my left breast as though I had scratched it - in fact I convinced myself that this is what it was. The breast then got more inflamed and red with what appeared to be bruising but by now I had been prodding and poking so much I thought that this was the cause. Went to the GP and she diagnosed mastitis and prescribed antibiotics. I questioned this as I am 51 and post menopausal but she said it was perfectly common for PM women to get this condition because of hormonal changes. I queried IBC and she agreed to refer me to the breast clinic at my local hospital She didn't say much and wouldn't answer my questions which I thought a bit strange. Three days into my antibiotics symptoms were unchanged though the rash seemed to fade at times but then become more diffuse especially when feeling hot. I now have the exact same symptoms in my right breast which is inflamed and ridged. Also my left arm and shoulder are inflamed and hot. Returned to my GP this afternoon and was told off for getting into a state and have been prescribed anti-depressants and sleeping pills. She says I have a breast infection and to contine taking the antibiotics and wait for my appointment at the clinic which will take at least 2 weeks. In the meantime I can't eat or sleep, hence my being up at 4am (UK time). To top it all I recently resigned from my job after being offered a new one. They already have a replacement for my old post and I won't be able to take up the new post if I have this terrible disease so effectively unemployed, which is a terrifying thought. I can't think what else I could have but I don't think it is masitis (I remember having this when breastfeeding my son 22 years ago) I do however seem to have cuts and spots around the breasts that look like bug bites and the rash is like something I had years ago which then spread to all over my body. I don't remember having these breast syptoms though. So to cut a long story short I am scared and confused and waiting for that appointment letter to come through the door. Would appreciate any advice, suggestions or alternative diagnoses (I live in hope) as am feeling very isolated at the moment.

Hello,
My name is Alicki and I am currently under evaluation for a IBC diagnosis. I'll spare you the details for now.
I'm not a doctor. I suggest that you get a immediate referral to the Royal Marsden in the UK. On the suspicion of IBC, they take you in immediately. It's the best cancer centre in the UK.
Take care, sorry I can't provide you with more information.

Thanks Alicki. Are you in the UK? I would need to go private to the Royal Marsden but think that is what I might have to do. Trouble is it's the same medical teams whether private or NHS. I don't have medical insurance but have some money put by. I will speak to my GP about a referral.

This really is moving rapidly Right breast looks enormous, red and covered in rash. Am finding more painful lumps including to the side of the breast and behind the nipple which has now started to invert. Left breast seems to have shrunk so don't know what is going on there and rash less angry looking. Have just received letter from the hospital giving me an appointment for 28th August 2 weeks exactly to referral date. Dont think I can wait that long. Can only imagine what will be happening to my body in the meantime. I have no doubt what it is and have excluded all other possibilities. I want to be positive but it's so difficult and I feel so alone.

Go to accident and emergency at marsden or nearest london hospital to it ......... If you are in UK your gp can refer you to marsden but a and e fastest route

Unfortunately I am at the other end of the country to London. I worry about turning up at A&E in case they accuse me of wasting their time. Nothing happens at weekends in our hospitals anyway. Getting increased swelling in my shoulder and arm and pricking sensations in my back and ribs. Wondered if it could be shingles but rash is nothing like that. If my arm gets any bigger I will definitely go to A&E.
Thanks

Christies in manchester? One thing we all learn on this is we do know our own bodies, trust yourself and so what if you are wastingtheir time, which i doubt......
-
Lily is right Elsie, going to an emergency room for an emergency is far from wasting anyone's time.
You're in the middle of a really stressful event and we all know and understand how dreadful the waiting is. Of course you are scared and confused, but you're not alone. We are here for support and anything else we can do to help.
It is unlikely that you'll be Dx with IBC, it is rare, and there are a lot of infection type issues that can cause your frightening symptoms, but that doesn't really help when the anxiety is raging. Our fear of the unknown is a powerful thing.
I wish you all the very best, and hope you get some answers soon, please let us know how you are doing...Hugs to you!

Has anyone heard of lupus mastitis? Came across the condition when researching the arm/hand/finger swelling and tingling am now experiencing. Also I seem to be getting a rash in different parts of my body - probably caused by stress and anxiety. Breast is now feeling less engorged and painful and the lumpy areas under the skin has also reduced. What the heck is going on? Am going to pop round to the local A&E and see what they say. Thanks folks for the advice and interest.

I have heard of different presentations of lupus which is a type of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Just wondering if you have had any kind of infection or virus in the short term before this started?
The reason I ask, is that I had a nasty gastro bug last year, a couple of days after it disappeared I came out in a rash. It started on my chest, across both breasts, I had both at that time, and over the next 24 hours it just spread further over my body. I went to the ER because it scared me, not the breasts particularly, I had never heard of IBC, then. I was told it was a common after effect of a virus....just a thought.
I hope you get some answers soon.... take care!

Prior to my breasts becoming red, swollen and painful I had been under the weather for some days, very tired with flu-like symptoms and slight chills but not enough for me to stay off work. I just dosed up on pain killers and carried on. Then my throat started to hurt and my glands came up in my neck. I had also had a series of mouth ulcers over the preceding weeks which I had put down to stress and over work. So yes definitiely something going on. The onset of these current symptoms happened a few days after those first initial flu-like symptoms, instense buring sensation in the right breast, pain radiating from the armpit along the side of the breast and feeling generally unwell. I initially put it down to a virus. Then of course the breast got red and swollen and that is when I went to the GP after googling symptoms. Am just hoping against hope that it is something else but in my heart am pretty sure it is IBC.

What did A AND E say?
-
Elsie, did you get to the ER?
The numbers are actually etremely in your favour for it not to be IBC. IBC itself is rare, and then if you take the 80% of breast issues that turn out to be something completely benign, and add that to the mix, you can see that it is an unlikely scenario.
We try to tell people to stay off google, because it is full of irrelevant out of date info, and can give information that can make anything look like cancer!
This is a great place for information. Take a look at the threads here on IBC, but most important is to get to a Doctor and get a second opinion. I believe, if there is any indication of IBC, they will do a punch biopsy.
I am sure there will be others who know far more about this type of symptom than I do who will come and give you some advice. I have to say, it sounds a lot like an infection, and sometimes it takes a couple of rounds of antibiotics to nail it.
There is another wise poster here who says "Don't go there till you have to!" Try to keep an open mind till you get more information, you don't need any more stress to complicate the issue.
Big breaths, take it a step at a time, and let us know how you are doing.
-
All of your symptoms together does not sound like IBC in my experience. It does sound alarming, though. Enough that you wouldn't be 'bothering' anyone to get to the bottom of this.

I didn't go to A&E in the end. The staff were dealing with some children and were busy so I left. (it's a small A&E in a country town) I know I am panicking hopefully unnecessarily. Breasts feel bit better this morning, though still red less swollen though Lymph nodes still sore and further lymph nodes up on my rib cage which weren't there before. Swelling in arm is also down a little but I am having pain and discomfort in my left shoulder blade. Can mastitis can spread from one breast to the other if ths is what I have. However a friend told me yesterday that a friend of hers was plagued by sore, red burning breasts for over a year as a result of hormonal changes during menopause. She's coming back to me with more informaton but this has given me some hope.
I will try and stay away from google but what did I do this morning on getting up? Opened up my laptop and googled IBC symptoms. I will be ringing my hospital first thing Monday and insisting on a earlier appointment.
Sorry to be on a downer I don't mean to fuel the general anxiety for everyone with my fears.
Take care all.

Elsie can you get to a larger hospital? If your treatment is not working and you are still getting new symptoms then you need urgent attention, whatever it is, and i am not at all saying it seems like IBC, but it clearly is something acute

Went to A&E this afternoon as had chest pains and numbness in my arm. Just got back home. No sign of heart trouble so doctor attributing it to what is going on with my breast. A lady doctor examined my breasts and admitted that she could feel some thickening and that I was doing the right thing going to the breast clinic. She also thought it a good idea to call them tomorrow to try and get an earlier appointment. Course that has just made me more anxious. Boobs are not as swollen and rash has faded. It was actually strangely comforting being in a hospital rather than worrying at home. I just hope I wont have to spend more time there in the future.
-
Hi Elsie I have just read all your symptoms mine are nearly the same I've got to go to hospital tomorrow to get results of my excisional biopsy and I will ask them about the other symptoms. I will let you know what they say ,I do hope the hospital can get you in earlier because it is so hard waiting it drives you nuts. Take care (Remember no Dr Google) it only makes it worse x

Thanks faerie111
When I got home last night and when I woke early this morning my breasts felt almost back to normal, minimal rash soft and floppy. Even the tenderness had reduced and I thoughyt yey, I imagined it all. Went back to sleep for a couple of hours to wake just now to both breasts swollen, rash looking like a mass of tiny red veins under the skin and lumpy pink rash elsewhere and what even my partner admitted to what looks like pitting in the skin (this has now faded) Got pain in my shoulder blade and lower back. What is going on? Can symptoms fluctute so wildly by the hour? Please let me know how you get on at your appointment. And good luck - hope for the best kind of news. x
-
Called the hospital and I have an appointment with the consultant tomorrow. I said I suspected IBC and luckily there was a cancellation. Hopefully will start getting some answers.
-
Great - good luck, please let us know how you get on
-
Hello,
Did you get your results?
Best,

Appointment tomorrow at 2.40m. Very nervous as have now found lumps and lymph nodes popping up on rib cage and groin so whatever it is seems to be spreading. Will post outcome tomorrow.

Breasts feel back to normal. Rash/reddening has almost entirely faded except for under each breast. Lymph nodes also not as tender. Could antibiotics have worked or could it be linked to the fact that I stopped taking my anti-cholesterol medication Lipitor two days ago. Looked up side effects and burning pains and swelling/rashes including on breasts is one of them. Now feel like a fraud as got an emergency appointment at breast clinic based on having IBC symptoms. Still attending my appointment at clinic though as can still feel lumps under nipple and to the side which feel different to what was there before all this started. Hope everyone else doing well. x

Just got back from breast clinic where I was examined by a nice lady doctor who listened to me describing all my symptoms and all my anxieties. She was adamant that I did not have IBC and said my breasts looked normal but recommended a mammogram as she could feel a number of 'lumps and bumps'. Apparently this was all clear as well. Don't know what to think now - I've got my life back after a week and a half of being in a dark tunnel - but not quite ready to believe. What shocked me was how long I had gone without a mammogram when I could have accessed one of the walk-in clinics any time. I had convinced myself that I had had one last year but was in fact 4-years ago. Have been taking my breasts for granted all this time, not really checking them as often as I should,
Doctor said that my symptoms are probably linked to menopause. She was unconcerned about the rash and said she had seen cases of IBC before; the swelling doesn't go up and down but progresses and the breast becomes enlarged and very red. Yet others on this forum have said that their rash was just a mild blush. Will definitely insist on a second opinion if symptoms persist or flare up again.
Thanks to everyone who has bothered to respond to my rants. I will be logging in to see how everyone else is doing.

Check out the Lipitor too.....
-
When I mentioned he possibiity of the Lipitor being responsible for the burning sensation and rash to the GP (who was a bit of a cow) she dismissed it. Will continue doing the research. Lots of horrible side effects such as nerve and muscle damage which could account for the arm swelling etc.
