I'm sitting here on my front porch drinking coffee, feeling like I'm in the middle of a beehive. There are no fewer than 12 ruby throats buzzing around the feeders and chattering. No peace and quiet here!

I peanutcat!!! Yes I do remember you!!! In fact, awhile back, some were asking about you and wondering where you are.We figured you were not in the chat room because of that. But we still remember  you!! It is a shame that you can't go back to the chat room.

But at least I get to see you here!!! It is great hearing from you!!!

I am just learning how to attract hummingbirds with flowers. There are some good websites to go to.

I love petunias and was so surprised the first time I saw a hummer with its beak into one!!

The first year I planted petunias they were huge and I had so many that I planted by seed, I have no been able to start petunias by seed and get plants since. It is terribly disappointing. I don't know why. But I keep trying!!!

Anyway, it is great to see you!!!!

Have any of you noticed a decline in Hummers this summer?  I only saw a Hummer 4 times total.  The person who owns the bird store I spend half of my paycheck at said you either have them or you don't.  This is a strange year.

Some birders were seeing them in droves, while others like me ,,,NADA

I do have constant Baltimore Orioles, can't keep with them.

I have at least 5 fighting over a feeder out front. Now there is no lack of real flowers here at the moment but it has been raining heavily. I've never seen so many at one time. The squeaking from them is amazing.

How far apart do you place feeders? I have only a small front porch 3 posts. Would that cut back on the fighting? The bad problem is it faces due west with no afternoon shade. I have space out back on the east side but I tend to run into them. Yuck of having sugar water in your hair. I have plenty of old feeders that would need a good soaking/cleaning. I use the cheapo plastic/red ones. DH would somehow manage to destroy anything glass and I can usually find a few pieces that interchange.

On another note I had a deer and doe fawn feeding out back during the rain. Nothing special about my yard and again feed is not scarce. She was eating grass/weeds and was out there yest., just caught a glimpse when I scared her off unintentionally. Know goats adore certain weeds, even thistles when young.

Luv, my two main feeders are only a foot apart but separated by a post. I have another smaller one on a post in the flower bed about 4 feet away. They don't fight over that one at all. They fight over the front ones during the day, but when the sun sets they are all cooperative trying to get in one last meal, sometimes two on a port. I think it is their nature to defend the feeders and even if you have one off by itself, a male will often make it his and try to keep others away. They all seem to be getting something, I'm filling them twice a day.

I had a doe and fawn eating my daylilies over the back fence last week. Last night they were eating apples off the trees. The doe would reach up and grab a branch and shake it so apples would fall to the ground where they ate them. Between the squirrels and deer, no apples for me, sigh!

Nancy - thanks for the feeder advice. I don't think all 5-6 appeared again together. This is right outside LR window where 'puter is so I hear them more than see them and think their squeaking is what attracted me. Will have to venture into garage for more parts to feeders. It is a scorpion haven; think DH needs to spray in there or bug bomb. Think feeder is empty but will have to dry out just a bit. Get my you know what up to make sugar water.

Deer don't bother me - well until they jump out of bushes onto roadway. Most people here feed corn for hunting. Think neighbor has some trouble with garden though his wife has beautiful roses and that is a fav. deer food. Only trouble is they share a major parasite with goats that is hard to DX. Deer mostly out of luck with only a few peaches and I think squirrels have munched those.

Mine practically bang on the window if the feeders are empty. They have been known to land on them while they're still in my hand and not even out the door. And boy do I get an earful when I do hang them.

Beautiful pics. Quick question: what type of hummingbird food do you buy? Or prepare? I purchase food and within days it turns clear color and my hummingbirds stop visiting.
