Exercise - Working Back to it After or During Treatment
Comments

I'll be getting some exercise tomorrow. My elevator is going to be closed tomorrow from 9-5. I live on the 6th floor.
Gritgirl, were your medical visits routine or diagnostic? Glad you got some walking. And you too, Rhody.
I went for a 4-hr motorcycle ride today. It wasn't really exercise (since I wasn't driving, haha) but swinging my leg over the bike worked my joints. A friend gave me a ride on his Harley thru the scenic mountains of NC.
Anyone new here who is getting started with some gentle movements? -
Walked again today, about a mile. Where I work I can get out and walk an entire block around which is just about a mile. Now that it's not so hot I am trying to do that at lunch most days.
-
Rhody, good for you.
Tarheel, that is the bright side of broken elevators. The motorcycle ride sounds lovely.
The medical day was a visit to my oncologist. I am on Herceptin and she was saying that my echo was borderline. Talked about maybe taking me off for a short bit. I panicked. Thank God for ativan and a good counselor who told me to call my doc again for clarification. Echo next week and then take it from there. The panic is perhaps good exercise. One good side effect is that anxiety cuts my appetite. Sick world we live in that I think, oh, good. Maybe I'll lose weight when I'm in terror. :-)
Today got my walking in. Sadly exercise doesn't help the heart in this situation. I name my affected body parts. The liver is Beatrice and I talk soothingly to her. The fake breasts also got names (I can't remember what they were). The heart is now Baby Doll and I give her pep talks. Come on, Baby Doll. You can do it. Momma needs her next dose of Herceptin.

Taking a quick moment to check in from South Carolina. We are sweating our brains out here. We have been doing outside work at a monestary and a company that builds water wells for third world countries. We have 16 teens and 6 chaperones. It is crazy hot and humid but we are staying at a beautiful campground and our cabins have air conditioning. By the time we leave I may have done enough exercise for the rest of the summer...
-
Gritgirl is there anything that will help your heart, beside going off Herceptin? I'm so sorry about your stress, but glad you have a counselor & Ativan. I hate the harsh side effects.
Ginger, sounds like you are doing some incredibly strenuous and rewarding work. I'm a little envious, except for the sweating.
I'm attempting my 2nd 5k tomorrow. I won't run the whole way. My lungs have taken a turn for the worse this week and I'm a little terrified. Had a pleural effusion return in July. Not sure if the new Tamox is helping or making things worse. Y'all cross your fingers for me. I'd like to at least finish. -
Wishing you an amazing run, Ronda! Will be rooting for you.
-
Tarheel. I'll be sending you lots of good energy.
Apparently not much I can do about the heart. Just hope she's holding.
Herceptin today so lots of walking today.
Hope all are well -
Great new photo Gritgirl! Love the new 'do too!
-
thanks, 2nd time around. figured it was time to up date since the last photo was awhile ago. today was very low key. mostly driving. but i did get a little bit of walking in.
-
Love your hair color, gritgirl! Super cute photo.
I made it thru today's 5k (a little over 3 miles) in about 45 minutes. My husband running/walking alongside me and my 15-yr-old son waiting for me at the finish line was my reward.
Thanks for the well wishes. I had an upset stomach all night before and remembering your kind words helped me out of bed to face the day.
Hope you have been able to get out and enjoy the weekend. It has been raining a lot here today in NW NC. -
Brava Ronda!!!! Major, major congrats.
-
Tarheel, way to go!
-
Gritgirl and all, this sounds like a place for me. May I join you? I am three chemos in and it has kicked my patootie! Went for a grand total 10 minute walk this morning. Two days ago I did "gentle yoga" and even that wasn't very easy.
Congrats, Ronda on your 5K, and you know, I think the motorcycle ride through the mountains is exercise for the soul. We need that too!
-
Welcome TwoHobbies! Glad to have you with us!
Tarheel Ronda, CONGRATS on your 5K! That's outstanding!
Gritgirl please take care of yourself. And I love your new "do" too!
So I got some frustrating news Friday. They FINALLY got my oncotype results and they are polar opposite of the post-open path reports. Path said ER+ PR+ but the oncotype says ER- PR- with a score of 57 (apparently >31 is high risk). So now they have to rerun everything plus add another test called a mammoprint which will probably take another 4 weeks. I started out being told I had simple DCIS and now two months after surgery I still don't know. Sounds like someone messed up....let's hope it was the oncotype lab in California! -
Wow, Rhody, that seems like someone's looking at two different samples, doesn't it? It sounds like you'll get to the bottom of it with the additional testing, but yes frustrating. You can always have your pathology reviewed by another hospital too, if you feel the need.
-
Rhody that's not the first time I've heard of conflicting reports. We know that hormone status can change over time. Can't help but wonder if this difference is because of misbehaving deceitful tumors and maybe not human error. Good advice on getting more opinions. Information without context isn't information. Hoping you will have peace while science sorts itself out.
Welcome TwoHobbies. Come right on in.
Thanks for congrats. I just received official race results and completed the 5k in about 44 minutes. Way behind the 17 minutes of the winner. A few 10-year-olds beat me, too. I don't mind being slow. I finished. -
Twohobbies, please do join us.
Tarheel, way to go!
Rhody, I hope they figure things out.
Weekends are low key for me, but I got half my steps in. Now that it's Monday again, I'll get more walking in.
-
So I ended up going for another 10 minute walk last night and I vacuumed the downstairs. I'm counting that! And I did about a 15 minute walk this morning. Luckily I have a dog to get me out, but I'm pretty slow and low energy and just lying on the sofa now.
-
Hi gritgirl love your new picture.
I'm back from my castles and cathedrals tour around he UK. if any one is watching the The White Queen series that is were we went. I was amazed how much energy I could find. I think it must be being away from everything stress wise. I was surprised just how much that had been draining me. I noticed It last time we went away.
Tarhee congrats on the 5k
Mara -
gritgirl - love your new pic!
Exercise has been spotty - tried to start a new regimen of walking combined with some hand weights, elliptical at intervals, and a couple of leg machines up at the little fitness center in my neighborhood. I have done it twice but am having trouble with staying consistent. I think it may be time to join something more formal with schedules and classes that will make me feel like it is mandatory to attend, lol! Also having trouble not eating everything in sight, lol! I must behave!
-
Good for you, two hobbies.
Welcome back, Specialk and Mara. Sounds lovely, Mara, view wise and relaxation.
Specialk, we can help keep you on track. :-)
I got decent walking in today. So tired because dog has been sick so kept having to get up. I'll be going to bed early tonight. -
Gritgirl, I'm sorry your pup has been sick. Hope it isn't serious. What kind of dog is it?
I'm cheering loudly for all who are making attempts to exercise. All of you inspire me because I know we all have obstacles to overcome. Keep trying and keep posting. -
Butch is an american Staffordshire terrier. He's had nasty GI problems due to meds. It was a long weekend and he just started eating. Hopefully he'll bounce back in a couple days so we can go walking.
-
Gritgirl, I hope Butch feels better soon. It's so frustrating that medicines for ourselves and our furry friends create such terrible problems for our systems. :-( Is he the kind of dog who will let you know when he's feeling up to a leash adventure?
-
Tarheel. Butch is doing better but didn't want to push. So we all went in the back yard so I could weed. Lucky me.
How is everyone else doing. -
So at work I sit on a stability ball. It's great for your posture and your core strength (wish I could say it makes you skinny!). But today I started doing crunches on the ball, trying to help my abs. And I walked again at lunch today. My pedometer says I did almost 10,000 steps. If I can try to do that most days I will be on my way to a good start. Hoping that if I can start doing some more regular exercise that maybe I can jump start my metabolism and lose some more weight. Last winter/spring I had these high hopes of doing arm exercises to tone my arms to wear a cap sleeve dress for my daughter's Labor Day weekend wedding, now my triceps look like turkey neck from not being able to do any exercises all summer between the surgeries, drains, and seromas. Sigh......
-
Rhody, you are off the hook.
Butch was a bit better tonight so we went for a short walk. He's still a bit edgy but at least he has more energy and is eating and drinking now. :-)
-
gritgirl, I'm so happy to hear that Butch is feeling a little better. Hope he's back to his old sweet self soon.
Rhody, so what are you going to wear to the wedding? I hope you have a dress that makes you feel pretty. 10,000 steps sounds like a lot to me! Way to go. Let's focus on the positive, not the turkey-neck triceps. (oh how i know just what you mean!)
What's everybody else doing? Seemed to be a lot cooler in the South today. Did anybody step outside for a breath of fresh air?
-
Rain, thunder and lightning for most of the day - and also hot! My DH is taking care of his parents this week (mom has surgery and dad had a spinal injection - he and his sisters are taking turns helping) and he is the one with the green thumb, I am sadly lacking and usually manage to commit plant/flower murder. So... I am trying to take care of all the plants in his absence - the hose doesn't reach the ones that are under the lanai so I carried many pitchers of water back and forth - at one point I considered weighing a full pitcher to see how heavy it was. It felt like exercise to me! The rain took care of the ones that are not under the overhang. Also going through drawers and organizing, trying to figure out which clothes I will never wear again.
-
Hi ladies,
I made it back from SC where it was HOT and Humid. Came home to temps in the 60's and dry. No real exercise except for unpacking and laundry. Will have to read back and catch up on everyone's posts.
